The May Report: 7/25/2012: Whatever happened to the Briefly noted section? I guess it moved to the headline which once again is too da** long, so just open the report… That MoMo meeting Monday night was hard to find and my cabbie kept thinking it was on Randolph, but it was actually 1143 West Rundell Place, a tiny little street near Racine and Madison; the loft is nice, but too much space for just nine people at GeneXus USA (www.genexususa.com) and the presenting company, www.superconnect.com, a subsidiary of Slalom Consulting, www.slalom.com, has a mobile enterprise HR application, so when you think about it, that’s a lot of info. to put on a mobile application (they are iOS now), but Adan Altamira, a front-end developer at Acquity Group (whose stock is now above water at $9 btw — they went public at $6 but it started to take off when Q2 earnings came out, and they have 550 people now) told me that he would use SuperConnect, and he feels that the developers, including the presenter Chris Balcer, are performance savvy, but the person who takes responsibility for the odd location is Todor Krecu (he wheeled me to Madison for a cab) who appears to be running this group now — whatever happened to Vivid?; 3 developers (I don’t even know their names), one from Orbitz, told me they’re working on a brand new mobile app game that helps you find people w/ similar interests — they expect to launch in 8 weeks, and it’s really more of an aptitude test disguised as a game; at the opposite end of the spectrum of a room full of developers is the PR/marketing heavy SMCC — there were only 3 women at MoMo out of 35 — two of them were recruiters, one was an office manager — but the split at SMCC was about 65/35 with women in the majority; by the time I got to SMCC at 455 W. North Ave., Willinger and Rozgonyi slinked out after lame showing at their own party — hey, aren’t the organizers supposed to stay until the end?, but Carolyn Martin from the board was there; One guy was just back from Israel and one guy from Motorola involved in social media (hck846@motorola.com) says he can’t say anything about the Motorola Mobility move to the Mart; Brendan Tripp snapped this pic and most people I talked to estimate attendance at about 100: http://tinyurl.com/c2fxtcr ; www.theTABAPP.com just yesterday signed a one year contract with a customer (they’re also at the App Store); they have 7 employees, have raised $50K F&F money with a serious angel round between $400K and $700K on the way, so says co-founder Justin Cerone http://www.linkedin.com/in/justincerone who (full disclosure here) bought me a Monte Cristo — we can’t be bought at TMR, but I think he was celebrating his new 4 hour old contact; in some actual news, word is that Jon Pasky is back to working with Geoff Domaracki out in San Francisco on their September Data 2.0 summit; word is that April Lane will bolt DePaul’s Coleman Center for a job at Catapult; meanwhile, her former boss Raman Chadha is trying to raise a venture fund, start an incubator and establish a leadership institute in the west loop — thank goodness this is not being done Len Bland / Ray Markman style (replete with chest pounding and all), but Ray did approach Tabapp; Nick Stojka, a founder of Commerx.com (brother Tim Stojka was CEO) of the divine era, is now with www.sertifi.com; I didn’t know that http://tap.me/ which got more than $3MM in funding had 9 founders with just 2 of the founders left, according to Jared Steffes who left Tap.me after 3 years to start http://signup.matadorapp.com/; this makes me feel old: Dan Zurawski is the son of John, and both work at http://www.authentify.com/; file this under “it’s a small world”: Bill Anthony was on a Southwest flight to NY; he met Jacqueline Von Edelberg and w/in five minutes, she was telling him about her horrible divorce — coincidentally, the very same thing happened to me at Funding Feeding Frenzy where Jacqueline’s firm, www.youtopia.com, was presenting; Howard Kurtz did a segment on http://www.reddit.com/ which he says played a big role in reporting on the Aurora, CO movie massacre; Desiree, he also had an interesting discussion about women in high positions in Silicon Valley which included Marissa Mayer, newly minted CEO at Yahoo!, http://tinyurl.com/cdmq3un, Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, http://tinyurl.com/2bc8kxz, and Meg Whitman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meg_Whitman about how sexist the media coverage is when the main topic of discussion about Marissa is her hair and her pregnancy and now there is pressure for her to take a maternity leave, so Desiree, sadly, Chicago isn’t the only place that hasn’t entered the 21st century; Matt Owens, who has made his living as an artist who paints portraits of people’s pets decided that pet painting was a luxury biz and 5 years ago got a job at the Brookfield Zoo painting murals and making toys for the animals (his wife Carla, formerly of Nuveen, is the zoo librarian), but the interesting thing is that he works for the teamsters union which says it represents anyone who has or uses wheels — the teamsters have a major presence at zoos in the U. S.; finally, thanks to Joseph Morris, a junior at Lincoln Park High School who plays point guard who rolled me 3 to 4 blocks last night while educating me on basketball — he’s looking to get a college scholarship

Ron …
It was pretty much packed most of the event … see the pic I snapped for my 4Square check-in:
https://foursquare.com/btripp/checkin/500f3061e4b0ded03a3d9a72?s=k_NVHcYPHBusF2DhlR4yApGbTdw
I’m guessing there were at least 100, possibly up to 150 (not being familiar with the venue, it’s sort of hard to estimate) … I did notice on the way out that there were a whole bunch of name tags that had not been picked up, and that was just about the “official” end time at 7:30pm.

Bob:

I am a little confused. In your email to Ron you said the highest unique bidder wins. In the below, it says the first highest bidder wins. Not sure which is write but this is a little confusing. Please clarify.

How to Bid Smart!
1. Click on an auction item.
2. Click on the Bid button and place a bid. If you have purchased a Bid Credits Pak the appropriate Bid Credit will automatically be deducted; if you need to purchase a Bid Credit, you will be redirected to the payment page.
3. After you make an offer, you can check if you are the HIGHEST bid. The auction page for the item will list the name of the HIGHEST bidders. The bid amounts will not be shown.
4. The first HIGHEST bid wins. If a bid amount is bid twice or more, the VidaBest.com system will automatically determine the User who placed the first HIGHEST bid by timestamp.
5. The idea is to make the FIRST highest bid amount while still being well below the MSRP. The auction page shows the current savings off of MSRP based on the current HIGHEST bid. This will give you a general idea where you stand, and you may keep bidding (with entry fees) to try and become the first HIGHEST bidder. Bids are acceptable until the auction has reached the appropriate bid levels.
6. You will always be notified by email and the system if you are the HIGHEST bidder additionally you will be notified if your bid was too low. REMEMBER: you can gauge your bid based on the savings meter! Use that to your advantage! If you are the winning bidder you will be notified shortly after auction closes by email.
7. As always the winning bid can be financed FREE

We are in the process of changing the model. The new model is in the document I forwarded to Ron in my email. It is as follows:
1). All auctions max out at 50% off of retail
2). All auctions have a limited, known number of bids required to close the auction
3). All auctions are won by the Highest Unique Bid at the close of the auction
4). All winning bids are financed, free of charge, free of interest with no credit check required
We should have the new site and running in the next day or two.

Innovation In the Legal Job Market help young attorneys, entrepreneurs
It’s no secret; the job market for young lawyers is in urgent need of revitalization. The notion that three demanding years of law school entitles grads to an oak desk, pressed suit and the keys to a lucrative legal career is now a tale believed solely by severely misguided undergraduates. The reality is that more than 40,000 students enter the law-job market annually, many of whom dragging along over $150,000 in debt. According to a recent Wall Street Journal study, nationwide, only 55% of those graduates are procuring full-time, long-term employment that requires a law degree. The system isn’t broken, it’s shattered.
How We Got Here
The erosion of the legal job market is due to a variety of factors, the most obvious of which being the recession. Compounding the issue, the legal industry is rigid and does not seem to be adapting. Big firms continue to overcompensate young associates, creating fewer jobs for the rest of the pool. Small firms are flooded with applications from young lawyers seeking positions in areas of law in which they lack interest or expertise. Other firms are taking advantage of the surplus in resources and hiring associates on a part-time or contractual basis to do their legal grunt work for minimum compensation.
Fueling the fire, law schools are not producing practice-ready attorneys. The focus of a traditional law school curriculum is to teach students how to “think like a lawyer.” However, a rough understanding of the methods of legal analysis does not necessarily equip budding lawyers with all the skills required for success in practice. The current model effectively turns students into commentators capable of critiquing the reasoning of others but doesn’t give them the experience needed to make the difficult decisions routinely encountered by lawyers. In short, law school doesn’t prepare students properly for the actual practice of law.
Where We Are Going
Within the current regime, employers and employees alike lose. It’s time to rethink how lawyers are trained. At least one Chicago law firm has accepted the challenge.
In early August, Chicago-based law firm Saper Law Office will be introducing a new program* that seeks to provide an alternative to young attorneys within the fractured legal market with its latest innovation, the Saper Law Immersion Program. The Immersion Program offers young attorneys real world experience counseling clients. Over the course of one intensive week, and under the guidance of Saper Law attorneys, new lawyers will engage directly with start-ups to provide legal services in the areas of intellectual property, business, and social media. For example, participating attorneys will create new businesses entities, file trademark and copyright registrations, draft licensing agreements, and create non-compete, confidentiality, and work for hire contracts. A heavy emphasis will also be placed on new media and social media issues and participants will conduct client meetings at 1871, Chicago’s beautiful new co-working space for Chicago digital startup companies. Finally, guest lecturers and trips to the State and Federal Courthouses will expose students to litigation practice.
In turn, businesses are invited to participate and receive discounted legal services from Immersion Program participants under the guidance of skilled practitioners and a world-renowned law firm. While most new businesses will be sourced from 1871 or Code Academy, businesses do not need to be affiliated with either entity in order to apply for legal counseling.
The Saper Law Immersion Program is an innovative response to the bleak state of affairs for young attorneys. Students of the program will have the opportunity to experience how law is really practiced in cutting-edge areas of the law. As it so often does, economic struggle has spurred innovation with Saper’s Program. Expect similar innovations within the legal field to follow as the industry continues to adapt and evolve.
*CLE Credit Pending.

edo Hires Seasoned Mobile Commerce Executive to Lead SMB Market Expansion
Former SK C&C President and Chief Operating Officer Keith B. Smith Joins edo as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Partner Content
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 24, 2012) ¾ edoSM, the leader in personalized card-linked offers, announced the appointment of Keith B. Smith to executive vice president and general manager of partner content. In this role, Smith will drive the company’s growth strategy across the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market. He will focus on expanding edo partnerships with major merchant acquirers, mobile payment providers, major media publishers, and scaling the reach of the edo offer and content network to maximize business value for merchants.

Through its 140 bank partners, the edo card-linked offers platform currently helps more than 200 local and national merchants connect advertising with in-store results by delivering highly-targeted, instantly redeemable deals that are automatically available through consumers’ credit cards, debit cards and mobile devices. The company offers a unique value proposition to SMBs, driving profitable new customer acquisition via a pay-for-performance model that allows for highly measurable, hyperlocal marketing campaigns that drive both in-store purchases and customer loyalty.

“Hyperlocal advertising is on the tip of every marketer’s tongue, but most solutions fail to deliver the return on investment or customer loyalty needed for smaller businesses to justify the spend,” said Ed Braswell, CEO, edo. “Through his previous partnerships with Google on their Google Wallet platform, along with managing early-stage sales, Keith brings to edo an unparalleled understanding of how marketing technologies can help retailers meet their business needs. He will be instrumental in scaling our content and merchant network with the SMB market.”
With over 20 years of experience in the payments and financial technology space, Smith brings a deep understanding of merchant partnership development, mobile technology and mobile banking, most recently running the world headquarters for SK C&C USA, the mobile commerce technology and services subsidiary of SK C&C, a $100 billion conglomerate headquartered in Soul Korea. Previously, Smith was the senior vice president of sales at the industry leading mobile banking company Firethorn, managing early-stage sales and marketing strategies, and assisting with product road mapping. Smith has also held senior management positions at Pre Holdings, Concord EFS, Vital Merchant Services, and Vital Processing.

“edo has quickly disrupted the mobile advertising space and driven measurable business value for some of the biggest names in retail and dining. Now, the company is developing the infrastructure to extend its powerful card-linked offers platform to the SMB community,” said Smith. “My role will drive collaboration across merchant, payment, mobile and media publishers, and expand edo presence and accelerate growth.”

About edo
edo is transforming shopping and saving by delivering the simplest solution to personalized offers that are automatically available on consumers’ credit cards, debit cards & mobile devices. Through its card-linked offer platform, edo brings unique insight and clarity into consumer spending behavior — helping marketers and merchants increase loyalty and target new customers with instantly redeemable discounts tailored to their customers’ shopping habits.
