The May Report: 6/4/2012: Len Bland kicks off nostalgia tour with 12 year old start-up Cognitek, http://www.cognitek.com/, run by old timer Michael Gurin, a guy who has been sending notes to TMR dating back to 2000; the current website has NO phone number and NO email address, and if I may offer an unsolicited opinion, this is no deal for prospective investors; Toodalu, https://www.toodalu.com/, has 70 merchants signed up as of May 22nd which will each donate 5% of the customers’ bills to the charity of the customers’ choice, and as CEO/founder Todd O’Hara told me, they submitted an application for 1871 when they launched their site and were called in to talk to Kevin Willer for an initial interview, and then Kevin told Todd that he’d refer Toodalu to the applications committee (Kevin, that’s not exactly an arm’s length relationship to the process on your end, eh? — sounds like you’ve got a gatekeeper role to me); but where my buddy Willer gets a minor league whack, Freddie Hoch gets kudos since Todd O’Hara told me that Fred did a lot to help them with ideas and connections including (I believe) The United Fund; and I won’t bother to mention today how Toodalu meetings with Terry Howerton were like bouncing off walls — you know, TIHII may have ADD not to mention a massive case of self absorption; meanwhile, Jennifer Thomas http://www.travel720.com/ is learning to do her own coding through Code Academy, so she has left Tech Nexus for the time being to concentrate on the class, but she does know where to get a great pedicure for $35 and what toe polish!; has Willer left Hoch gasping for breath as everything seems to be moving to 1871? You tell me. But that panel on Crowd funding was so full of food for thought and info. that I really can’t complain — one detail to mention: in Chicago, entrepreneurs want to use crowd funding for their own businesses, but in NYC, they want to set up portals for crowd funding, and while it’s a work in progress, it may cost you at least $80K to get a broker/dealer license; In the never ending case of Efoora, Judge Benjamin Goldgar really has three choices and we’ll know what he chooses at 10am on Wednesday, June 6th: Goldgar can grant the motion to dismiss based on the fact that the bankruptcy paperwork was filed 4 months too late, but then he has a problem — what to do with the case?; or he can deny the motion to dismiss and the proposed $50K settlement offered by Dr. Varshney and tell Trustee Cathy Stege of Jenner & Block to go to California, walk through the plant with a scientific expert, get the bank records, and do some real work instead of relying solely on what Varshney’s lawyer told her on the phone; or Judge Goldgar can deny the motion to dismiss and grant the $50K settlement proposal in which case the Efoora bankruptcy proceeds with $240,000 minus legal expenses, and not a nickel for the 4,200 investors (shareholders) who put in $57MM, not to mention the creditors; in any event, there is no case law for this, my sources say, so Goldgar is flying blind and it’s very interesting, if only from an academic point of view

http://www.1871.com/calendar/ You have to click through because this did not copy well, but here’s the June 2012 calendar for 1871 — and Kevin Willer, on March 30th when you gave me the tour of 1871, you told me that all events would be held after 5pm because the space is for entrepreneurs to do their work, so why do we have all these 9am workshops, and things like 11am Google I/O Extended and 11am Google I/O Extended, Day 2?; Plus, what is Leo Burnett doing at 1871, 2pm Leo Burnett office hours — I understand IIT, NWV, NU, and other VCs and universities, but Ad Men??!! Don’t forget this Thursday at 6pm, Built in Chicago launch at 1871, but note that every month they call it a launch and on June 21st, there are the Moxie Awards at Park West, according to Maria Katris, maria.c.katris@gmail.com.
– Tuesday, June 5: BNC VC Group 6/5/12. Presenters: Tigertracks http://www.tigertrackssafety.com/, Cognitek http://www.cognitek.com/ , Red Meat Market http://www.redmeatmarket.com/. Hosted by Polsinelli Shughart PC. May here. I should add that Mark Wilhelms of Red Meat Market is throwing a launch party on June 14th at Goose Island, Current Events, Launch Party!, June 14th, 2012, 6:00 – 10:00, Goose Island Brewery, 1800 W Clybourn Av., Chicago, IL 60614
– I spent a good deal of time this morning tracking down info. on Michael Gurin who runs http://www.cognitek.com/. The link provided by Len Bland did not work, so I googled it, and when I saw the name Michael Gurin, I realized immediately that I knew him, so I consulted those ever handy TMR archives. What I found was notes going back to the year 2000. Here are some things I wrote, including a whole ditty on a firm Gurin started in Ohio. But most intriguing is that there is NO phone number and NO email (that I could find) on the Cognitek website and my email to Gurin bounced back — not exactly an auspicious sign for a prospective investor — shades of www.affluence.org anyone?
– One of Gurin’s ventures: Cleveland venture developer JumpStart Inc. has committed to invest $400,000 in an Akron company that is developing technology to make electricity out of heat. ReXorce (pronounced “resource”) Thermionics Inc.
– The Partnership for a Connected Illinois: Immediate Job Opportunity: Regional eTeam Network and Technology Coordinator
[Editor's note: May here. I'm not re-running it, but Thursday, June 7th is also the SMCC event. Two more reports tonight, and they are ready to go.]

Session Overview

Popular “content marketing” dogma claims people are buying online based on how engaging your online content is. But this is simply not true. People are buying based on how much the business behind the content is willing to actually prove to them before the purchase. They’re deciding to buy based purely on the marketer’s ability to deliver results before the actual purchase. And that means you’ve got to have a systematic, yet practical way to prove to customers that investing in your product or service will give them full results. Jeff Molander will give us that system and show you how to converse with clients in ways that generate more leads, referrals and sales.
Don’t miss this chance to learn:
§ How to turn friends, followers, ‘likes’ and evangelists into paying customers
§ Three things you don’t know about social media that will multiply your returns
§ Common social marketing best practices that often do more harm than good

About Our Speaker

Jeff Molander is the authority on making social media sell and author of Off The Hook Marketing: How to Make Social Media Sell for You. He is adjunct digital marketing faculty at Loyola University’s business school and an accomplished entrepreneur. In 1999 he co-founded what is today the Google Affiliate Network. But in the end, Jeff gets measured by his ability to show how fans and followers can be converted to leads, referrals and closed sales.

June 20 in NYC or July 9 or 12 in Schaumburg: Motorola Solutions Chicago Media Event
Subject: Motorola Solutions Chicago Media Event
Date: 6/4/2012 1:44:38 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: MChristopher@webershandwick.com
To: ronaldmay@aol.com
Hi Ron,
Hope this finds you well. A couple of weeks ago you received an invitation to Motorola Solutions Media Day on June 20 in New York City. We understand that the trip to New York is a little far so we wanted to extend an invitation to a second event about the future of retail at the Motorola Solutions Innovation Center in Schaumburg, IL on either July 9 or 12- whichever day works best with your schedule. The formal invitation is copied below but please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
Best,
Morgan

Motorola Solutions invites you to a special briefing that will be a game changer for the retail industry.
The retail world today is more complex and the stakes have never been higher. Shoppers have many options to buy anything they want, anytime, anywhere. Their virtual experiences have heightened their expectations on what their physical world should offer… and that doesn’t stop at the front door of the retailer’s store.
Join Motorola executives for a one-hour briefing that brings emerging thinking, innovation, and inspiration on what omni-channel retail of the future looks like. We’ll also discuss how technology is playing a role in connecting with shoppers and enabling associates to provide an optimal – even personalized – experience.
Hear answers across a wide range of topics including:
· How can retailers adapt to consumer expectations brought about by the technological revolution?
· How can the in-store experience be augmented by the virtual?
· How can retail associates use the right technology to serve as a vital link between shoppers, other associates, and manufacturers to share that information in meaningful ways?
· How can sales associates standing right in front of shoppers know as much about them as the online retailer does?
Be the first to hear about the advanced solutions that will change the future of retailing.
We look forward to seeing you in Schaumburg. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bill Abelson or
call 631-738-4751.

I spent a good deal of time this morning tracking down info. on Michael Gurin who runs http://www.cognitek.com/.

Subj: CogniTek – Saw you at TER (02/22/00)

Ron,
It was great to have the chance to speak with you at the TER yesterday! I am sending you some additional information on our company. We have essentially completed product development and are actively seeking funding to rapidly expand our business. In today’s Internet-based economy, one of the major challenges has been to link electronic storefronts to back-end manufacturing and distribution operations.

Just think back to this past holiday season, where online buyers had no idea when their purchases would be delivered and were often disappointed because the inventory and distribution channel broke down. CogniTek provides products and services enabling manufacturers to become a seamless extension of the new connected economy. Our advanced control solutions link real-time production systems to enterprise resources, customers, and suppliers, regardless of their location.
In addition, our sophisticated development environment reduces the reliance upon scarce and expensive computer programmers that have traditionally been required to develop and maintain complex Business-to-Business applications. Today, manufacturing firms must be positioned as an integral part of a complex, modern supply chain, including customers, suppliers, and the enterprise as a whole. Cost and complexity have placed the promised benefits of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems completely out of the reach of small and middle-market companies. CogniTek’s products may be used as stand alone enterprise solutions for middle market companies. Alternatively, they may be layered onto existing systems within Fortune 500 companies to extend enterprise planning to include the production floor.
CogniTek is uniquely positioned to become a market leader in this area and we have the growth potential of a dot com company, coupled with real products and a solid revenue model. Keep up the good work!

From TMR, 12/14/2007
Michael Gurin has started a new firm called ReXorce, www.rexorce.com . The firm is a spin-off from Cognitek, Gurin told me. They are located in Akron, Ohio and they are developing a thermal engine technology. They have the ability to convert low quality waste heat into electricity.

Akron firm gets prototype funds JumpStart invests in new company that uses NASA technology in renewable-energy pump
A new Akron company called reXorce Thermionics Inc. has closed a $1.8 million deal that will allow it to build and demonstrate a device that converts common heat sources into electricity. The company will build a prototype of the power generator, which has been in development for five years, in its lab at the Akron Global Business Accelerator.
JumpStart Inc., Northeast Ohio’s venture development organization, has announced it is investing $400,000 in reXorce (pronounced (Akron Beacon Journal (OH), 355 words.)

May again. Michael is living in an airplane, he says. The firm is located in Ohio because “Ohio has lots of competitive reasons, grants, etc., to make Ohio very attractive,” he said. “Better than Illinois?” I asked. “Much better,” Gurin said.
“We got funding from a pseudo economic development organization. They have significant grant proposals for energy and energy applications.”
Look, next week is Christmas and I am trying to be nice here, not naughty, but if you look at this link your eyes will pop out when you see the number of firms that they had present their business plan summaries at the Akron Regional Change Angels known as ARCH Angels.

It just reinforces the reality that we are kidding ourselves here. We have far less activity than states like Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri and we piddle around with those stupid $5K grants that Jack Lavin and David Weinstein take such pride in. The reality is that a chunk of change that can make the difference in the survival of a firm and the growth of a firm is along the lines of $300K to $500K or more and that is what Gurin and ReXorce got: $400K. gurin@rexorce.com

Cleveland venture developer JumpStart Inc. has committed to invest $400,000 in an Akron company that is developing technology to make electricity out of heat.
ReXorce (pronounced “resource”) Thermionics Inc. will use the JumpStart investment, as well as another $1.4 million from individual investors to engineer and build a prototype of its environmentally friendly power generation device, Thermafficient.
Based on the carbon dioxide heat pump that NASA developed to cool spacecraft, Thermafficient absorbs waste heat from industrial processes, such as steel making, or heat from the sun or the Earth.

Waste heat can be converted into mechanical energy that generates electricity, said Phil Brennan, ReXorce Thermionics’ chief operating officer. A byproduct of this conversion is cooling, which can air-condition buildings, he said. Waste heat from the ReXorce process also can be used to heat buildings or create hot water.

ReXorce was spun off from CogniTek Management Systems Inc., the Chicago developer of advanced materials technologies, in April. The company’s Thermafficient technology has been under development by inventor Michael Gurin, CogniTek founder and chief technology officer, for several years, Brennan said.

On Aug. 2, BASF Corp., the North American unit of the German chemicals giant BASF AG, announced a cooperation agreement with CogniTek to find out whether combining pressurized carbon dioxide and ionic liquids – those containing only ions, such as salts that have low melting points – could create electricity from low-temperature heat sources.

ReXorce also is working with Mayfield Heights manufacturer Parker Hannifin Corp. to develop fluid-control components for its system, Brennan said.

Gurin and Brennan chose Northeast Ohio for the headquarters of the spinoff because of JumpStart, the nonprofit that invests time and money in young companies that have significant growth potential. ReXorce Thermionics is JumpStart’s 30th investment in 23 companies since mid-2004.

JumpStart has the “ability to communicate and demonstrate that the state – not just an organization like theirs – is a powerful potential supporter of our approach,” Brennan said.
Strong academic institutions, such as Case Western Reserve University and the University of Akron, also drew the company here, he said.

In addition, the state’s Third Frontier technology development project announced in mid-August that it would add alternative energy to its list of grant-making priorities. “That’s a bit of providence,” Brennan said.

Thermafficient could save industrial, retail and energy companies significant amounts of money by producing electricity – and reducing the need for electricity to provide air conditioning – while reducing pollution, Brennan said.

ReXorce Thermionics plans to use its investor money to build demonstration models of its device for industrial partners by early next year, he said. A commercial rollout of the technology could come in late 2008 or early 2009, he said.

Utilities could use Thermafficient to make energy from their waste heat, or from renewable heat sources. “We are able to make solar and geothermal cost-effective alternatives to traditional power generation,” Brennan said.

Even retailers could use the sophisticated heat pump to heat or cool stores – with the potential of halving their electric bills. “There’s a lot of pent-up demand for a true cost-effective, renewable energy solution,” he said.
