(Crain’s) — Lawrence Kaplan is joining a venture-capital startup in January after completing his duties as president and CEO of Navteq Corp. this year.
Mr. Kaplan will become CEO next month of Eudora Global LLC, based in Downstate Glen Carbon. The firm was founded last year with a focus on health care, online gaming and renewable-energy firms.
He will bring a “deep understanding of the digital technology and media sector along with the general management and strategic leadership we now need,” Jeff Cooper, Eudora Global’s founding member and chairman, said in a statement.
Mr. Kaplan has worked since 1995 for Chicago-based Navteq, which creates maps for consumer navigation systems, since 1995. He was named CEO in 2009, a year after Nokia Corp. bought the company.
Finland-based Nokia said in June that it would integrate Navteq with its social location services operations to form a location and commerce business and that Mr. Kaplan would help in the transition through yearend.

About Eudora Global, LLC
Eudora was founded by a core group of partners that bring a wide variety of capabilities and experience to the table – legal expertise, financial acumen, enterprise management skills, governmental insight, marketing savvy – in addition to a host of outside resources and high-level connections enabling the organization to access, scrutinize and execute transactions with swiftness and certainty. This foundation of talent is further augmented by the ability to gain immediate audience with influential business and political figures at both the national and international level.
What makes Eudora distinctly unique from other growth and acquisition firms is its existing business platform and geopolitical connections. Having been previously involved in a variety of international organizations, businesses and transactions, the founding partners of Eudora have the ability to access deal flow from existing companies and early stage opportunities that would sound nearly impossible to believe: unless the track records and pedigrees of the individuals were public knowledge.
Another key differentiator is Eudora’s focus. The Company has chosen to direct its attention and resources towards four key sectors: Health Care/Wellness, Emerging Markets, Internet Gaming, and Renewable Energy/Products. By maintaining concentration on these types of opportunities, Eudora will be able to more efficiently and effectively identify, vet and act on them, enabling the Company to gain the advantage over the competition whose interests and resource pools are typically spread thinly across myriad initiatives.
Lastly, and possibly most important: Eudora has been built from the ground up to produce RESULTS. Every business sector within the Company’s portfolio is built upon strategic relationships or acquisitions that have been thoroughly vetted and proven to have high potential for returns. Only companies with proven business models, predictable revenues, high growth potential and projections that demonstrate both a rapid ascendance to cash flow and the ability to generate high profit margins are considered for inclusion in the Company’s portfolio.

Health Care
In recent years, the PBM (Pharmacy Benefits Management) segment of the health care industry has grown exponentially – and shows no signs of slowing. Eudora has entered into a partnership with a leading Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) consulting/fulfillment firm specializing in the design and management of formularies for Fortune 100 Companies and large public entities. Additionally, complementary pharmacy services businesses are being considered for partnerships and/or immediate acquisition.
Emerging Markets
Emerging markets are areas with social or business activity in the process of rapid growth – and also typically the world’s fastest growing economies. With the Eudora founding partners’ geopolitical influence and connections, as well as their relationships with established organizations in the international business arena, a number of exciting opportunities have already been identified and the potential transaction list is growing at a steady rate. Eudora also benefits directly from its wholly-owned subsidiary – Radix Global – a market acceleration firm with offices in India and China.
Internet Gaming
Internet Gaming is a progressive, emerging market that is positioned for explosive growth – and Eudora has plans for great success in this industry by offering high-level technology, expert programming, market-altering innovations, world-class management and access to capital through its first property – a multi-sport fantasy league gaming site with a sister site that focuses on the lucrative world of online gambling. An active social networking platform will be used to unify the two sites with a “push/pull” strategy.
Renewable Energy and Green Products
The Renewable Energy & Green Products division of Eudora has seen a wealth of opportunities presented and has initial plans to take on six portfolio projects/companies in order to create a comprehensive platform of entry into the renewable energy investment arena. Key areas of interest and development include three waste-to-energy and biofuel projects, a geothermal energy project, a utility scale wind project and a distributed scale wind (rural cooperative) project.

Ron,
From what I understand, New World bought their shares last year around a $25-30B valuation when Zuckerberg sold his $100m in stock to fund the NJ public schools. So, if the IPO goes out at $100B and trades up, they’ll make a fairly quick 4x or so on their investment. They came in before the Goldman round. Not certain but this is what I heard.

Also, the articles I’ve read have said that it’s very hard to get shares of Facebook as they are coming from tightly controlled insider sales and existing investors have first bite at them. So, not certain how they got them as few can.

BigTime Announces Licensing Agreement With Intuit
Development Deal will Embed Proprietary BigTime Technology in Intuit Practice Management Suite Under Multi-Year OEM Agreement
CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BigTime® Software, Inc., a leading provider of cloud-based productivity tools for growing professional services firms, has announced an OEM licensing agreement with Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ: INTU). Under the terms of the development deal, BigTime will work with Intuit to embed BigTime’s core time, billing, and practice management functionality into a product that targets accounting professionals.
This agreement highlights Intuit’s recognition of BigTime’s ongoing leadership in terms of seamless integration with Intuit’s QuickBooks applications– an essential consideration for small businesses with time tracking and reporting needs. It also underscores Intuit’s interest in working with partners to ensure they are providing the best value-added experiences for their customers. Under the terms of this new co-development agreement, Intuit and BigTime will be collaborating to embed BigTime’s tools within some of Intuit’s cloud-based offerings, including a practice management suite presently in development. The agreement also sets the stage for clients who use BigTime’s time and billing software and Intuit’s practice management suite to transition between platforms, depending on their evolving needs.
“Intuit selected us from a broad field of potential partners based on our proven technology, scalability, and interoperability with third-party platforms,” said Brian Saunders, CEO and founder of BigTime. “This co-development agreement will bring accounting professionals the combined value of an Intuit-BigTime product, and will enable them to access their business information where and when they need it.”
“At Intuit, we strive to deliver products that help accounting professionals save time within their workflow so they can spend more time growing their practices,” said Aaron Brady, product manager in Intuit’s Accounting Professionals Division. “The integration of BigTime’s technology into our practice management suite helps us achieve those goals on behalf of our customers.”
The agreement underscores the strength of BigTime’s multi-channel strategy for growing their market presence.
“OEM agreements give BigTime the ability to scale rapidly while giving partners, like Intuit, instant access to leading technologies without going through their own development cycles. I think there’s great potential, not just for this partnership, but for embedded partners in other industries as well. It’s part of what makes BigTime more than just another cloud-based software firm,” said Tim Krauskopf, co-founder of Spyglass, Inc. and a member of BigTime’s Advisory Board. Spyglass’ rapid growth, culminating in a $2.5B acquisition in 2000, was fueled by licensing agreements with Microsoft, Oracle and others.

MU Unveils 3-D Visual Immersion Laboratory
New “iLab” will allow undergraduate students to design projects in a 3-D environment
Story Contact: Nathan Hurst, hurstn@missouri.edu, 573-882-6217
For photos available with this release, please click here.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – One of the most difficult tasks architects and interior designers face when designing buildings and rooms is visualizing exactly what their projects will look like when they are finished. Now, the University of Missouri architectural studies department has developed the Immersive Visualization Lab (iLab) to help students visualize their designs more accurately. Bimal Balakrishnan, an assistant professor of architectural studies in MU College of Human Environmental Sciences, says the iLab will be one of few labs in the country to allow undergraduate students to get hands-on experience using immersive 3-D technology to complete and test their designs as part of their design studio curriculum.
“Most university immersion labs are reserved primarily for graduate students to use for research purposes,” Balakrishnan said. “While the MU iLab will be used for research, it will also serve as an excellent teaching and experiential tool for undergraduate students.”
The MU iLab incorporates three large high-definition projection screens aligned side-by-side to create one continuous, horizontal viewing screen. Wearing special “active shutter” glasses, students are able to view their computer-generated architectural and interior designs on the screen in 3-D. The immersive effect of the large screen gives students the sensation of standing inside the buildings they are designing. Balakrishnan says this virtual reality effect can be a valuable tool for architectural designers.
“Visualizing true characteristics in a three-dimensional space is one of the biggest challenges design students face,” Balakrishnan said. “This is because design mediums, like models and floor plans, place the students outside of what they are designing. The iLab will not only allow students to experience their designs from the inside, but they also will be able to view their designs in a much larger scale and experiment with different textures and styles in real time.”
The iLab also will feature a design collaboration environment, which will allow students to work together on design projects seamlessly. This environment will let students connect computers and project designs on an interactive “smart board,” making it much easier to work on elaborate design projects in groups. Balakrishnan says building costs for the iLab were cut in half by designing and assembling the $85,000 iLab in-house.
“We saved on cost by developing the infrastructure ourselves,” Balakrishnan said. “We also are saving on cost for maintenance and service by using easily replaceable components when they become obsolete. We are not tied to any specific vendor, so we can easily adapt the iLab as the technology develops.”
Balakrishnan acknowledges the advice and support of faculty and staff from the Immersive Environments Lab (IEL) and the iCon lab from Penn State University. He says the iLab is part of a continuum of a desktop-based virtual reality approach which began at Penn State

Neil Kane released from the TMR stockade four days early on his 138 day sentence so that he can celebrate Chanukah with his family, and Bob Geras gets out early too, even though what Neil is doing now with all the boards he’s on fits his MO — he’s the guy who wants all the accolades for finishing the race when he hasn’t even started the race; Neil does things a** backwards. Just ask him (and Al Wasserberger) what each of them sold their last start-up for
Neil Kane ends year as the only unemployed member of several fluffy boards with one friend for new Facebook page: himself
It’s clear that Neil Kane’s progression from Bob Geras’ welfare state to his next position is moving about as slowly as Neil himself who boasted about accomplishing a speedy 2.4 miles in just under an hour and a half. Neil, there are probably some crippled turtles who move faster than that on a daily basis.
Neil, I let you out of the stockade early. Your nine month anniversary for being unemployed is coming up — Christmas day.
As we approach your nine month anniversary of being unemployed on Christmas day, you’ve accomplished this:
1. It seems your pace both physically and mentally has slowed to a crawl. Should we get an ambulance ready? How about a grave plot for your career?
2. You’ve managed to establish a Facebook page for your Illinois Partners consulting service and yet have managed to attract exactly one person who likes it: yourself.
3. You leaned on old acquaintances to secure mentoring and board seats within several organizations thinking that this will impress someone enough to give you a job.
Neil, my experience as a headhunter is that most people join boards after they get a job.
Neil, with your record of self-aggrandizement and business failure, I can only imagine that a company would turn to you when they think they can make money by shorting their own stock.
Neil, give Zynga a call.
Your whole approach now is to go through the “back door” with ersatz connections to get a job when at first you were expecting a stampede to your doorstep.
That belief just reflects your level of arrogance and the size of the balloon that is your ego. Neil, could you possibly be more full of yourself?
Neil, most telling is the fact that Bob Geras never lifted a finger to offer a defense of your seven plus year tenure at Advanced Diamond Technologies. That alone speaks volumes.
Neil, in the spirit of social networking I propose to crowd source a solution to your unemployment problem by offering some suggested professions that might suit your skillset – the readers can vote on which one suits you best!
1) WalMart greeter: Neil – you like to think that you’re “the face” of any place you’re working – and as a greeter you are THE FACE of Walmart to everyone who comes in the door – for a second or so. The biggest company in the world with your name right in front — that should suit your ego just fine!
2) City garbage worker. Go with me on this Neil – I know you’re not the kind of guy to get your hands dirty – and we all know – especially people like Bob Geras – that you don’t like to work – so why not the quintessential “no work for the money” job – a city of Chicago garbage worker. Just park the truck near your favorite diner – in your case a gym (we all know what a fitness buff you are) – and collect a check every two weeks.
3) Carnival worker. Imagine this Neil – hundreds of people every day depending on you for their lives on a second by second basis – you control them for a full three minutes at a time because you are the hand that runs the ride that they’re on. Travel – respect – power – authority – you have it all as a carny!

Merry Christmas Ron:
Pursuant to our conversation from last night, I published the following reports over the past few days. Please note that I was almost hit while crossing a Pedestrian Crosswalk at 99th & Western last night by a marked EPPD squad car while walking returning home from publishing my Mitt Romney report at the Evergreen Park Public Library as well as dropping-off a card for a loved-one.
Keep in touch.
All the best,

Merry Christmas Carol:
Pursuant to my voicemail, please inform Judge Marovich that I am having logistics issues getting downtown for our 11a status hearing in Judge Marovich’s courtroom. In the event a family member is not home with the car by 10a – I will make my way to 219 S Dearborn via walking/jogging down Western Avenue, to Archer, Archer to State Street, State Street to Jackson.
I’m in good medical condition so I should be able to make same trip in just under 3-hours which will peg my arrival at 219 South Dearborn at just around 1p (CST). As an aside, my corresponding Misdemeanor Trial in Markham is scheduled for early January so I will be asking Judge Marovich to please continue to stay my corresponding civil rights case until we have effectively resolved the Misdemeanor charges at trial.
Lastly, I do want to inform Judge Marovich that I was almost hit last night by a marked EPPD squad car while walking across the pedestrian crosswalk at 99th and Western Avenue at approximately 9:45p last night. Irrespective of the law, although I’m pretty confident the law is explicitly pro-pedestrian right-of-way – I am am beyond disappointed with the continued bullshit of both EPPD and Evergreen Park. While I appreciate the fact that the marked EPPD car did not in fact strike me – the EPPD squad car clearly did not need to accelerate as they made their left hand turn onto Western Avenue as I was clearly crossing the pedestrian right-of-way crosswalk.
Sincerely,
Tom Bennett 312.459.1175

ISC
Dear Ron,
Illinois Science Council brings you science for shopping, the science of Santa (in case there are any skeptics of his abilities in your household), facts on reindeer and an important save-the-date (2/4/12). You can put your Money where Your Mind Is then put your Mind where Your Money Is by taking our science survey.
From all of us at ISC we wish you a safe, sassy and scientifically valid holiday season!
Put Your Money Where Your Mind Is -Support a 5-year-old!
Based on its “birth date” as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Illinois Science Council is 5 years old. As any newcomer, it started slow – first learning to crawl, then walk and talk. Now, like any 5-year-old, it has its own personality and is a lot of fun to be around. But it still requires constant adult supervision.
ISC is crazy curious about all things science. In 2011, ISC:
Got a little ambitious learning about the cosmology of multiverses and quantum physics with science authors;
Was convinced it could handle adult things as it explored the chemistry of beer and whiskey; and,
Showed its playful fun side too – doing experiments with the chemistry of chocolate and honey.
To continue to grow and thrive in coming years, ISC needs you to put your money where your mind is. Please make a tax-deductible donation to ISC today.
Continuing the analogy, that could be $10 (for kindergarten supplies), $100 (toward its college fund) or any other denomination. Any amount is greatly appreciated and we promise to use it wisely!
In 2012 ISC expects to get into… brains, pi day, polar exploration and electric vehicle cars just for starters. If you have other ideas – please send them along!
Give us your thoughts!
We need your help shaping next year’s events. So after you’ve made a donation (and even if you didn’t), put your mind where your money is!
Do you have ideas how to make Illinois Science Council better? Programs you want to see? We want to know! Please take 5 minutes to answer a few questions. This brief survey will help us learn what programs will be of most interest to you in the upcoming year.
Short survey – click here
BONUS: Answer the survey by December 22 and your name will be entered in a drawing to win one of 2 sets of ISC beaker/coffee mug/wine glass/candy holders! Two winners will be announced via Facebook, so please
Science of Santa
On rare occasions people who do not understand the real meaning of science try to claim Santa is a myth becase he couldn’t travel fast enough to reach all the good children in one night, his payload is too heavy, and foolish talk about there being no flying reindeer.
But even amateur biologists know that scientists have only identified 1.8 million species to date but there are an estimated 3-30 million species total on the planet. Clearly, scientists just haven’t yet seen flying reindeer to document them and describe their unique abilities!
ISC’s holiday tradition celebrates the work of our physicist friends at Fermilab. Arnold Pompos and Sharon Butler used basic math and scientific principles of light and relativity to explain how Santa does it. Check out Santa at Nearly the Speed of Light (with permission, FermiNews, December 11, 1998, Volume 21, Number 23.)
A sense of skepticism is healthy, but science and technology also give us a sense of awe and wonder about our world and what’s possible. The technology of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been tracking Santa for over 50 years. Those folks know what they’re doing. Visit NORAD tracks Santa.
How ’bout a little love for the non-flying reindeer?
Check out this fun blog piece, “Non-Flying Reindeer Deserve a Science Article Too” which is full of interesting facts about the animals without PR agents who don’t have a song or TV show. Or visit the Itgel Foundation’s Reindeer life project and their ongoing work with reindeer husbandry in Mongolia.
For more on reindeer, visit the Reindeer Blog (not all is in English) or the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks where scientists study the non-red-nosed ones.
Science of a Cocktail Party 2/4/12
Mark your calendars –
ISC is planning a very special Science of a Cocktail Party
event for Saturday, Feb 4th, 2012. Guaranteed to brighten up your winter so you won’t want to miss it!
Science of gift-giving (or not)
If you haven’t finished your holiday shopping, read these interesting studies into the psychology of gift giving and receiving. If you have finished, wait and read them next year so you won’t feel bad about your choices this season.
John Tierney explains why you don’t need to be thoughtful in your gifting, or spend much money – if any! In Pursuit of the Perfect Gift? It’s a Lot Closer Than You Think, New York Times, 12/12/11.
Science Daily explains why giving two gifts to someone can be worse – less appreciated – than giving just one. The Paradox of Gift Giving: More Not Better, Science Daily, 12/12/11.

Well folks it’s that time of year again. For me Christmas is a time of
family, rest and reflection. The Christmas holidays is the one time of year
I can get a break from my normal busy schedule. Running a business is trying
at the best of times and I have the disadvantage of remembering when it was
so much simpler. I also have the disadvantage of being older. I can remember
when youth and enthusiasm were the greatest tools in my arsenal.
Christmas to me has always been a time punctuated by a sense of the
permanent things in my life….my wife and children, and siblings, my,
nieces
and nephews and friends. And Christmas is a time when my present pays
tribute to my past. I will sit up late on Christmas Eve and think of my
father, gone now 35 years, my mother gone now 10 years, Lorraine gone
now 9 years. I will remember my late mother and father in law, aunts,
uncles, sister in law I will hear the clamor of Christmas of my youth,
remembering my Irish grandfather’s brogue and I will look again into my
grandmother’s gentle eyes, hear my brother George telling me to follow my
dreams. I will remember the joy my brother Larry brought into our family
when he was born in 1949.He still is my best friend.
And Christmas has always been a time when I am uniquely capable of being
grateful. I am grateful to the soldiers and their families who will spend
this season apart so my family can gather and worship in freedom.
I am grateful to all those whose acts of generosity will make this Christmas
joyful for the needy families in our communities. I am grateful for the
pastors and church workers who will labor through the holidays to add
meaning to our lives. I am thankful for all the police and fire people who
will be working this holiday to protect us.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have supported
me over my life and let you know how much it has been appreciated. I know
many of you look forward to reading my articles and I appreciate all the
kind comments I receive about them. I am a very blessed man. I write these
articles in hope of helping you deal with the problems we all seem to face
as we travel through this journey called life. I have spent this evening
thinking and writing this Christmas message to all of you.
Not all of my articles are well received by some including those I call
friends. I can only apologize for that as I have never meant to offend
anyone. These are my opinions only and I can only write honestly and from my
heart. Anyone who truly knows me understands I have no choice in that
because that is who I am.
In my articles I write a lot about faith and hope. I certainly do not mean
to preach. I know some perceive it that way.
I don’t know why some are given so much, and some receive one blow after
another. I wish it were not so. But life can be a very subtle thing.
This holiday provides all Americans the reminder to pause in their pursuit
of happiness, to look back at the past year, acknowledging developments and
making an assessment of their efforts, and to recognize our blessings.
Christmas is a global weaving together of religion, media and popular
culture, creating a legitimacy of its own, and independent of the church’s
definition of spirituality.
Christmas is the festival that we celebrate with our family and for a
Husband the closest family member is his wife.
There are so many things that I am grateful for in this life – and Jenny you
are the orchestrator of most of them. You hold the keys to my heart. You
are the guardian of my soul. You are the warm and safe place that I run to
when this world has taken its toll on me. Yours are the arms that I long to
have wrapped around me when I need rest. My head upon your chest is a safe
place to be -to hear your heart beat for me – for us.
With you, Jenny, I am strong. You often wonder how I can be such a strong
and independent person. Now you know. Truth be told – I would not be the man
that I am today without you and your love. You’ve given me the strength and
courage to succeed. You’ve give me the strength and courage to go forward
and to go on. You have given me everything by giving me your love.
My hope, my desire is to be able to return this love to you. My desire is
That you know you are the most important person in my life. That I love you
With great depth that cannot be measured, weighed or counted.
I love you all all of the time. Please remember this as you read my words.
