[Editor's noe: May here. Planning meetings are not generally my schtick, but last night at MoMo was enlightening. Vivek Vaid of Morningstar and one of the organizers does not want the typical attendee to go to all the meetings. If one person find 8 out of 12 meetings useful enough to attend, he's happy. So MoMo seems to be casting a wide net for its target audience from corporate mobility strategists to casual users. They are really serving three areas: technology, marketing and strategy. One of the big topics of discussion was the need for a bigger vision, going beyond monthly meetings with speakers to a resouce hub and educational exchange model, informing Chicagoans about what is going on other cities and countries some of which may be light years ahead of Chicago. If Silicon Valley is the chip capital, San Diego is the mobile computing capital. MoMo has gone from 13 to 335 members of the Meet-up in less than two years with multiple changes in leadership; from my info., Anthony Hand was the best leader they had, but he moved to California. There were fairly new people at the meeting, and at least 40 post-its were submitted with ideas for meetings. There appears to be little connection betwwen MoMo and other local groups such as SMCC or the Mobile Visionary Roundtable which meets at the ITA.]

Illinois Broadband Awareness-Interested Colleagues –
In summer 2009 an application for an Illinois Broadband Awareness Program was prepared by Community Life Initiative, Illinois Association of Regional Councils, Illinois Clicks, Youth Communication Chicago, The KeyPad Kid Project, Digital Workforce Education Society and supported by many of the parties on this message. The proposal was submitted to NTIA BTOP — but not funded — as NTIA focused on “national, local and special audience” broadband awareness programs. In Illinois NTIA supported national-local outreach efforts of One Economy, local Smart communities efforts of City of Chicago, and Get Seniors Online efforts of Connected Living in Illinois and Massachusetts. As well, Partnership for a Connected Illinois has undertaken a number of initiatives to build Awareness of the Benefits of Broadband in the 7 National Needs areas in the FCC National Broadband Plan. These have included a photo & graphic-based website and communication tools www.broadbandillinois.org See PCI News, Impact and Facebook tools especially.
In fall 2011, the DCEO Eliminate the Digital Divide Advisory Committee convened an EDD Sustainability Meeting to plan a multi- year EDD program combining Digital Literacy training + links with tech equipment support/workforcetraining/adult education/library and digital media in Community Anchor Institution areas. The Plan includes a Marketing Committee focusing on Broadband Awareness for new users of practical benefits of broadband, and how to contribute to statewide and local area outreach by Public Computing Centers, (including Community Technology Centers and Digital Media Centers) in 48 community college areas of 175,000 to 275,000 residents. See photos taken by Diana Collins Quinn of the September 28 event from The KeyPad Kid Project Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/The-KeyPad-Kid-Project/75815548937
We look forward to working with you in 2012 on Awareness of Benefits of Broadband activities, including those of The KeyPad Kid’s Coloring Book tools, as described below. Partnership for a Connected Illinois is working with Illinois Broadband Deployment Council and many others in building Broadband Partnerships for Vital Economies in all 10 DECO regions of the state.
One Broadband Awareness approach includes the use of Consumer-friendly Graphics, such as the Prototype KeyPad Kid Coloring book attached, and described below.
What are other tools and techniques we can use in Illinois?

Friends and colleagues,
As we reflect on this past year, and look towards 2012, please find attached a prototype of a “graphic gift” in the form of a prototype Coloring Book of The KeyPad Kid, as a consumer-friendly tool for our Digital Age.
It seeks to “visually communicate and engage” through pictures and a few words, “sometimes humorful paths for success” of us all, wherever we are, young or old. Our world today is one big “Learning and Networked Society for All.” The Coloring Book seeks to bring home the Benefits and Practical Opportunities of broadband connections — helping us all meet the 7 National Needs for broadband in the FCC’s National Broadband Plan. See FCC’s new multi-billion dollar Connecting America campaign and “time, dollar, education and life supporting” benefits in improving lives, businesses and productive communities. www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/connecting-america
If you have thought on the Coloring Book — or on a Broadband Awareness Program for Illinois, or for special audiences you know, please add a “like” or “comment” on The KeyPad Kid Facebook page, www.facebook.com/pages/The-KeyPad-Kid-Project/75815548937 or send me or Charles Boyce a note. Dr. Jerry Field is working with a new Content Writers and Editors Association adult-and-youth journalism network (including Youth Communication Chicago), and is also assisting in planning Illinois Broadband Awareness Programs for 2012 and developing “ad sales” revenues for community media publications.
If you would like a hard copy, I will be here though Wednesday this week, or get in touch with Charles Boyce. Both he and I will be at Youth Communication Chicago holiday event Wednesday 4 – 5:30 at Columbia College, 218 S. Wabash, 7th Floor, and will have copies there.
Best for the holidays,

A consumer rewards program for social good? Okay, maybe it’s a dumb idea. But, we’re doing it anyway!
I mean, these days they have rewards programs for nearly everything – travel, banking, eating, shopping – even for talking on your cell phone. So, why not reward people for doing good?
Website: GoodPays.me
1st Buzz: www.killerstartups.com/Web20/goodpays-me-get-money-for-doing-good-things
Here are some interesting stats:
· 86% of consumers believe businesses need to place at least equal value on society’s interests as their own.
(that one has Milton Friedman rolling over in his grave)
· 94% of consumers will switch brands for a business associated with a good cause.
· 71% of consumers want brands to work with them to support good causes together.
· Moms & Millennials lead the way (along with emerging markets).
(see attached slides for more)
(We mix these into our Kool-Aid every night to help stay awake – much more effective than caffeine.)
Here is another way of looking at it:
Ray Kinsella: I did it all. I listened to the voices, I did what they told me, and not once did I ask what’s in it for me.
Shoeless Joe Jackson: What are you saying, Ray?
Ray Kinsella: I’m saying? What’s in it for me?
– Field of Dreams
We think your readers might find this interesting. Plus, all our beta launch members get first dibs on sponsor offers for life (which matters, because each offer has a limited amount).
We’re less than a month old, and less than bootstrapped (we sold our boots for chump change long ago, and they never had laces to begin with).
However, we have done this before, have ties to the incentives industry, and have all the code libraries we need from a prior life (see www.KarmaKorn.com).
Now, all we need is you! Do you dare, disturb the universe?

Ron,
I noted Dexter Morgan’s response to a recent report on Efoora. Unfortunately, I was traveling and did not see this information. Could you please send me this article?
By the way, I am interested in Efoora because I was working in Corporate Finance at the time when they were still operating. I had a series of meetings at their offices and sensed a “problem” in the management team.
I have been following the May Report for a number of years and I congratulate you on providing insight on many companies – especially those who are “operating on the edge” (if not beyond it)!!

“I’ve never seen a case like this. In general when I speak to PR firms they have ethical guidelines that would prevent this kind of conduct.”
While anyone is free to edit the encyclopaedia, the site’s guidelines urge users to steer clear of topics in which they have a personal or business interest.
“I offered to pop by their office next week give them a speech on ethical editing of Wikipedia – but I guess they didn’t think that was too amusing so they didn’t respond,” Mr Wales said.

Internal review
The investigation comes as blogger and search engine optimisation consultant Tim Ireland discovered activity by a Wikipedia user nicknamed “Biggleswiki”.
Mr Ireland said the account had been responsible for adding positive – or removing negative – information from entries about or making reference to several Bell Pottinger clients.
In some instances, such as with the Paramount Group, Biggleswiki requested “edit protection” after altering a page in the hope that other users would not be able to change the most recent amendments.
Lord Bell, chairman of Chime Communications, the owner of Bell Pottinger, said an internal review had been launched.
“I can’t see any bad headlines for our clients,” he told the BBC. “You won’t find anybody, including journalists, who doesn’t do exactly the same thing.”
He stressed that when companies had requested Bell Pottinger post untrue statements onto the site it had flatly refused – citing Wikipedia’s guidelines.
“We are having our own conversations with Wikipedia, and we are also conducting our own internal review to establish the facts.”
Bell Pottinger is one of Britain’s largest lobbying and public relations companies. This week it came under fire after the Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported that the firm had written a speech delivered to the UN by the Sri Lankan president.
Mr Ireland has called for Bell Pottinger to publicly declare the identities of the other accounts under investigation in order to reveal which other edits have been made.
“I’d like to see that list,” he told the BBC. “What they’ve done wrong here is they’ve not declared an interest. Let’s see them do it – even belatedly.”
Lord Bell said there was no intention to make details of the accounts public.
’1929 Rolls-Royce’
The Wikipedia team has posted a list of articles it believes have been altered by accounts traced back to Bell Pottinger.
So far, they said of the 10 accounts identified, two had carried out over 100 edits each.
Mr Wales highlighted an account – diginerd84 – which was among the investigated accounts. The profile said it had been set up by a 50-year-old retired stockbroker in Mayfair with an interest in classic cars – particularly a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
“I will personally buy a full tank of petrol for Mr Draper’s 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II if he exists at all,” Mr Wales said. “Perhaps it’s time for Bell Pottinger to issue another statement.”
The BBC has approached Bell Pottinger for a response to this claim but at the time of publication it had yet to respond.

There is nothing wrong in itself in someone trying to correct perceived inaccuracies in Wikipedia articles – after all, that process happens every day and helps the online encyclopaedia get closer to an objective account.
What is disturbing is the fact that the edits are carried out by an anonymous person who does not declare an interest.

Wikipedia, which has grown into one of the web’s most popular destinations since being founded 10 years ago, is edited by a huge number of volunteers who follow an agreed set of rules.
Wikipedia’s guidelines state that a conflict of interest (COI) represents an “incompatibility between the aim of Wikipedia, which is to produce a neutral, reliably sourced encyclopaedia, and the aims of an individual editor”.
It adds: “COI editing involves contributing to Wikipedia in order to promote your own interests or those of other individuals, companies, or groups. Where advancing outside interests is more important to an editor than advancing the aims of Wikipedia, that editor stands in a conflict of interest.”
David Gerard, a UK-based spokesperson and volunteer for Wikipedia, told the BBC that the investigation must establish whether or not Bell Pottinger carried out the edits in “bad faith”.
“We’re having a close look. What the team is going to do is look at Bell Pottinger’s clients and see what edits have been made.
“We have plenty of experience in dealing with people who try to spin Wikipedia – after a while it becomes really obvious.”
He said that Wikipedia would be reviewing the effectiveness of its system for flagging up suspicious additions or edits.
