The May Report: 12/5/2011: Starting the stab at Holiday parties — where on Earth is Melanie

The May Report December 6th, 2011

The May Report: 12/5/2011: Starting the stab at Holiday parties — where on Earth is Melanie
when I need her?; Acronym Bash tomorrow night — let’s get the calendar section
on the new site going!; A few regular events of the last few years are not
happening this year: Tech the Halls and Windy City Social are taking a pass on
holiday parties and I haven’t nheard back from Kevin Willer about a CEC party
yet; Julian Pretto says he had 200 in his office on November 17th and add the
230 at Entrepreneurial Bash on the same night at UIC for a total of 430 or more
that night; btw, Pretto says he’s close to closing a deal on 3-4k sf office
space near Ogilvy but he’d given up on having his firm’s name on the building
downtown as he does in Arlington Heights — at least for now :-) ; Congrats to
Willer, Maloney, Desiree Vargas Wrigley, Paul Lee, one guy from Groupon and one
or two others from the tech world for making this year’s Crain’s 40 under 40
list — I’ll get you the full list

On the importance of windows not
broken
If I have to explain it to my mother, then I should say it to the
readers more clearly. You can’t prove a negative, but the value of the TMR
archives is in what you don’t see happening.
In statistical terms, it is to either reduce the number of false positives
or increase true negatives. This is in some ways what Bill Zangwill’s decision
system does for VCs. It helps them avoid dogs with fleas rather than helping
them pick grand slam winners. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_I_and_type_II_errors
Or a better analogy may be what is known as the broken window fallacy or

glazier’s fallacy, which demonstrates how opportunity costs, as well as the
law of unintended consequences, affect economic activity in ways that are
“unseen” or ignored. This theory was first advanced by the French economist and
philosopher Frédéric Bastiat in his 1850 essay Ce qu’on voit et ce qu’on ne voit
pas (That Which Is Seen and That Which Is Unseen) to illustrate why destruction,
and the money spent to recover from destruction, is actually not a net-benefit
to society. That work, which has lasted 161 years, was published less than six
months before his untimely death.

The parable is as follows: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_broken_window
++++++++++++++++++++
Have you ever witnessed the anger of the good shopkeeper, James Goodfellow,
when his careless son happened to break a pane of glass? If you have been
present at such a scene, you will most assuredly bear witness to the fact that
every one of the spectators, were there even thirty of them, by common consent
apparently, offered the unfortunate owner this invariable consolation-”It is an
ill wind that blows nobody good. Everybody must live, and what would become of
the glaziers if panes of glass were never broken?”

Now, this form of
condolence contains an entire theory, which it will be well to show up in this
simple case, seeing that it is precisely the same as that which, unhappily,
regulates the greater part of our economical institutions.

Suppose it
cost six francs to repair the damage, and you say that the accident brings six
francs to the glazier’s trade-that it encourages that trade to the amount of six
francs-I grant it; I have not a word to say against it; you reason justly. The
glazier comes, performs his task, receives his six francs, rubs his hands, and,
in his heart, blesses the careless child. All this is that which is
seen.

But if, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion, as is too
often the case, that it is a good thing to break windows, that it causes money
to circulate, and that the encouragement of industry in general will be the
result of it, you will oblige me to call out, “Stop there! Your theory is
confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not
seen.”

It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon
one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not
had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or
added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six
francs in some way, which this accident has prevented.[1][2]

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
May again. You can’t see and measure things that don’t happen. For years,
people came up to me on the street and thanked me for helping them to avoid the
mistake of working for firms like marchFIRST.
Several things that didn’t happen just this year, in
part due to information provided in this report:
– Michael Kurgan and his new firm Servicewing Healthcare servicewing.com/About_Us.html
in Southern California was denied a lease for 10,000 sf of office space.
– A major insurance company in NYC decided to take a pass on doing
business with www.affluence.org
run by Doug Stuckel and Mike Profita.
– There may be folks here and in Toronto, Canada who have refrained from
doing business with Chris Tomes and brother Ed as a result of warnings in this
report. Todd Ousley in Michigan (734-678-3033) found his suspicions confirmed in
TMR and continues his pursuit of Tomes.
corporate.nygard.com/uploadedImages/DSC_0599pg2_9%281%29.jpg
– Al Wasserberger snookered angel investor Bob Geras out of a lot of money
when he was CEO of Media River. Al escaped to Belize, but has returned to
Chicago this year, telling people that he sold his company to Google. That story
is pure fabrication. But Al is trying to palm himself off as an advisor to
investors. Anyone who sees him should be very wary.
– There are dozens of other examples of people who did not take a job or
did not hire someone or who did not invest in a firm or who avoided doing
business with someone in part due to information in this report. Neil Kane, Len
Bland, Maverix.net, Nancy Sullivan, Mike Rhodes, Tom Thornton (and here Carolyn
Nowinski told me at the Entrepreneurial Bash at UIC on November 17th that
Churchwell never took the $5MM he was slated to get from the Kansas Bioscience
Authority and on that narrow point, I did play a role by alerting Kansas state
senator and chairman of the Kansas state senate commerce committee Susan Wagle
to the fact that TLC did not have a new fund and was therefore not eligible for
the money which was being doled out on a matching basis) and many more
examples..
As I told my mother, The May Report is not here to bestow meaningless and
phony accolades on local people and companies. We have The Trib, Crain’s, the
Sun-Times, Technori, Tech-li, TINC, Thomas D. Kuczmarski and Dan Miller and
others for that.
TMR is a warning system, hopefully an early one, about
mistakes to avoid
making.

Tackles Student Debt Crisis with Financial Aid Acquisition

Hi Ron,
Sourcebooks EDU, the new education division of Naperville-based independent
publisher Sourcebooks, has acquired two online financial aid resources from
Chicago-based veteran admissions and guidance counselor Frank Palmasani to help
U.S. families conquer college costs.
Why is this matter important right now?
· 62% of Illinois college graduates in 2010 are carrying student debt at an
average of $23,885 per graduate
· U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan called for the issue of rising
college costs to be urgently addressed (Nov. 29)
· The Occupy Wall Street movement has made student debt a centerpiece of
its campaign
The college financial aid system in the U.S. needs to dramatically shift
its focus from figuring out how to finance college after a school has been
selected to considering affordability first.
It’s costing American families nearly $1 trillion in student debt. And the
solution starts right here in Chicago.
Instead of putting finances at the end of the search, Palmasani advocates
that families should determine their financial fit first, by maximizing the use
of net price calculators, now required on every college website, and determine
their affordability threshold by selecting colleges within seven categories
(flagship state school, flagship out-of-state school, non-flagship state school,
non-flagship out-of-state school, highly selective private college, midsize
private college and private college).
These resources can be found on myfinancialfit.com, a subscription-based
website designed to help families match their affordability with the net price
of colleges. Myfinancialfit.com offers a 10-item confidential and anonymous
questionnaire that evaluates tax credits, cash flow, available savings and
reasonable borrowing, and then provides families with a college affordability
range.
Please contact me if you are interested in setting up an interview with
Frank Palmasani to discuss the financial aid solution coming out of
Chicago.
Thanks,
Liz Kelsch

Sourcebooks EDU Offers Solutions for Student Debt
Crisis

Financial Fit Transforms the College Search Process by Addressing
Affordability First
CHICAGO, Dec. 5, 2011-Student debt has surpassed credit card debt for the
first time in U.S. history, and the amount of outstanding student loans is
expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2011. College seniors graduated with an
average of $25,250 in student loans in 2010, up 5 percent from the previous
year, according to The Project on Student Debt.
The issue has prompted U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan to call on
higher education officials to work with greater urgency and creativity in
reducing college costs, and spurred the Occupy Wall Street movement to set up a
campaign focused on student debt.
Sourcebooks, a leading provider in college-bound resources for students and
educators, recognizes the need for sound financial advice and guidance when it
comes to the college search process. The publisher recently formed a new
education division, Sourcebooks EDU, which made its first acquisition on Friday
of managingcollegecost.com and myfinancialfit.com. The online financial aid
resources were founded by veteran admissions and guidance counselor Frank
Palmasani, to help families conquer college costs.
“The economic impact of the student debt crisis is one of the big unknowns
that we are facing today in this country,” Palmasani said. “The Financial Fit
College Search Program is intended to engage students, parents, and high school
counselors in a unified quest of finding affordable college options. The
ultimate goal is to help families manage their college costs without excessive
debt.”
Every year, thousands of college-bound students and parents face the
complexity and anxiety associated with filing for and receiving their college
financial aid packages, as well as making decisions that will affect them
financially for years to come. In a process fraught with myths and
misinformation, families often find out at the last minute that the colleges of
their choice come with unexpectedly high financial burdens.
“Frank starts with the college search process and provides tools to support
families all the way through choosing and paying for college,” Sourcebooks CEO
Dominique Raccah said. “Guidance counselors are telling us they cannot act as
financial advisors and have no resources available to direct families to as they
begin the college process. We’re finally going to be able to provide
help.”
Managingcollegecost.com is a free, subscriber-based website that utilizes
Palmasani’s vast and varied 25 years of experience to create a valuable resource
for students, parents, and college admissions counselors. As users navigate the
site, they will see features and links, along with 33 videos dealing with a wide
range of issues pertaining to the financial aid process. Palmasani’s blog keeps
parents up-to-date on the financial aid timeline while teaching them how they
can help their student select the best AND most affordable option.
Building on this vision, Palmasani also created myfinancialfit.com, a
subscription-based website designed to help families match their affordability
threshold with the net price of colleges. Myfinancialfit.com offers a 10-item
confidential and anonymous questionnaire that evaluates tax credits, cash flow,
available savings, and reasonable borrowing, and then provides families with a
college affordability range.
Sourcebooks EDU plans to make these tools more widely available, as well as
enhance these resources with additional video, content, webinars, seminars,
books, interactive ebooks, and software tools.
About Frank Palmasani
Frank Palmasani, founder of
managingcollegecost.com and myfinancialfit.com, began learning about the
financial aid process in 1976, his first year as a high school counselor. In
1981, he moved to the college level eventually becoming a director of
admissions. After a twelve-year stint, he returned to the high school arena to a
position that he continues to enjoy today, serving as a guidance counselor.
Palmasani also has also delivered seminars on the college financial aid and
planning process to an estimated 100,000+ people since 1985.

Local Chicago Patent Agent D’vorah Graeser to Lead Panel Discussion on
Doing Business in China
CEO of Chicago intellectual property firm, Graeser Associates
International, Inc. will offer speaking series providing insights to Chicago
companies interested in expanding their business into China, et al.
Graeser Associates International, Inc. (GAI), an international intellectual
property firm specializing in the preparation, filing and prosecution of medical
device, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, bioinformatics and medical software
patents, is leading a series of free panel discussions on international business
in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries.
The first panel
discussion will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on December 14th in Conference Room
A/B at the Illinois Science & Technology Park in Skokie, Ill. The Park,
which houses many successful Illinois life science companies, aims to transform
Illinois from a scientific research hub to an economic engine for bioscience
technologies.
Founder and CEO of GAI, D’vorah Graeser, Ph.D., will lead the
discussions, the first of which will focus on how Chicago companies can tap a
growing life science market in China. D’vorah will touch on many of the legal,
intellectual property and cultural issues involved. She will be joined by
Zhigang Ren, Senior International Trade Specialist at the Illinois Office of
Trade and Investment, and Michael Rosen, Senior V.P., New Business Development
of the Science + Technology Group at Forest City Enterprises.
“We are
excited to spearhead the event and to share our expertise on entering foreign
markets to local entrepreneurs,” Graeser said. “Our hope is that sharing our
past experiences and tribulations with people will benefit future entrepreneurs
in Illinois and around the country.”
Each speaker will contribute valuable
insights based on their specific area of expertise. Graeser brings over 15 years
of experience in the biotech industry as a patent agent. As a Senior
International Trade Specialist, Ren can speak to his experience designing and
implementing OTI’s China trade and investment promotion programs.
The panel
discussions will highlight the importance of Illinois companies’ expansion into
emerging markets to remain globally competitive. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn
supported this sentiment in September when he signed a memorandum encouraging
cooperation between the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition (ISTC), the
Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization (IBIO) and China.
The panel
discussions are open to anyone interested in learning about international trade
in the 21st century.

December 4 – December 10

We know that your job search can get quite
frustrating these days with more people trying to find a job and fewer
employment opportunities available.

To ease the burden, we’ve tracked
down 10 top companies that are hiring this week — from sales jobs to finance
jobs, full-time jobs to part-time jobs. We hope you find a job that’s perfect
for you.

Good luck job hunting!

1. UnitedHealth Group
UnitedHealth Group currently provides health insurance services to over 75
million people worldwide. The company recently has been actively involved in
creating several technological advancements in the health care field, including
the development of video conferencing systems for patient/doctor communication,
the creation of electronic health records systems, and the release of an iPhone
app to locate participating physicians.
Employee Review: “I really enjoyed my time at UnitedHealth Group. The
trainers were very knowledgeable and were always there to answer any questions
that I had. I worked as a claims associate for just a few short months before
being promoted to another department. I then went on to work from home! Only
left this company because of personal issues not related to my job. Great place
to work!”*

2. Boston Market
Headquartered in Golden, Colo., Boston Market was founded in 1985 as Boston
Chicken. The company changed its name to today’s “Boston Market” in 1995. The
chain owns approximately 530 restaurants in 28 states. It employs roughly 14,000
employees. Boston Market has expanded their offerings in recent years, adding a
national catering program and ready-to-eat frozen menu items to supermarkets
nationwide.
With the holidays fast approaching, Boston Market has announced a “heat and
serve” holiday banquet program for hosts who are looking to save money or time.
The company is also working to improve the guest experience, starting in
restaurants around the Atlanta metro area.
Employee Review: “The customers are 99 percent awesome. Lots of regulars.
The food is fairly healthy and varied enough not to be boring. I end up eating
at work more times than not, so this is a plus. The stores I have worked in have
all had a cheerful ambiance with lots of sunlight.”*

3. Ernst & Young
Headquartered in London, England, Ernst & Young is one of the so-called
Big Four accounting firms. The company’s activities consist mainly in doing
financial audit work for other corporations.
Ernst & Young also is actively involved in areas such as actuarial
consulting, as well as due-diligence research for mergers and
acquisitions.
The company is one of 12 to receive the 2011 “Business Partner of the Year”
award from Proctor & Gamble. Ernst & Young was selected from over 75,000
P&G suppliers, in part due to their high level of client/customer
service.
Employee Review: “Excellent brand, great client base, excellent opportunity
to work globally. Focus on people is strong, given the nature of
consulting.”*

4. AT&T Retail
With over 96 million mobile customers, AT&T Wireless is the 20th
largest mobile phone service provider in the world, and according to Forbes, the
14th largest company in the world by market value.
AT&T’s mobile division is headquartered in DeKalb County, Ga., just
outside of Atlanta. Between the years of 2005 and 2007, the company acquired
Cingular Wireless and BellSouth. Until recently, AT&T Wireless was the
exclusive carrier of Apple’s popular iPhone line in the United States.
AT&T is now one of three major wireless carriers, alongside Verizon and
Sprint, to feature Apple’s new iPhone 4S. Recent reports indicate that
AT&T’s wireless revenue has grown by over 4 percent versus last year.
Employee Review: “They provide great benefits and pay. I know they match
quite a bit for 401(k) investment. It is a great job for someone interested in
technology and learning about new technologies. Also, it is great to know that
you are helping others out on a daily basis.”*

5. Sears
Most people recognize Sears as the department store common to countless
shopping malls. While its department stores are certainly popular, Sears
Holdings operates several other brands as well.
Sears is one of several retailers offering layaway service again, partly
due to recent economic conditions. The company was the ninth-largest retailer in
2010, behind other giants like Wal-Mart Stores, Target and Costco.
Employee Review: “My favorite thing about working with Sears is the
stability. The company has been around for over 100 years and is one of the
largest in the world. It has great benefits and work-life balance is excellent.
I don’t have to worry about being on-call on nights and weekends. They have
really great quality people who are easy to get along with.”*

6. Lockheed Martin
Lockheed Martin, based in Bethesda, Md., is one of the largest defense
contractors in the nation, and currently has about 140,000 employees worldwide.
The company is the defense department’s largest contractor in terms of sales,
with $19 billion in contracts awarded so far in 2011.
The company’s operations can be broken down into four main business units:
aeronautics, electronic systems, information systems and global solutions, and
space systems. Of these units, electronic systems is the largest in terms of
revenue, having brought in roughly $14.3 billion in 2010 sales.
The company, along with the Federal Aviation Administration and
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, recently announced the opening of the
Florida NextGen Test Bed. The Test Bed, located in Daytona Beach, Fla., is a
laboratory where new aviation concepts may be tested. Additionally, Lockheed
Martin was just awarded a $6.7 million contract to support training for the
United States Army.
Employee review: “The senior leadership is very competent and there are
many opportunities to move around in your career. They offer great benefits and
the work that you do is fulfilling.”*

7. Chrysler – Mopar
Although the term “Mopar” has come into use for any Chrysler-branded
product, it is officially the parts-and-service division for the Chrysler Group,
which includes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands in North America. Mopar is
based in Center Line, Mich.
Pietro Gorlier, CEO of Mopar and former vice president of Fiat, says that
Fiat saw a great deal of untapped potential in the Mopar brand. Fiat took
control of the Chrysler Group in 2009, and not long ago announced a new
management structure as part of the merger.
The company recently announced the addition of approximately 1,100 new jobs
at its plant in Toledo, Ohio. Chrysler’s parent company, Fiat, also revealed the
new 500 Abarth, a sportier version of the subcompact 500. Chrysler and Fiat hope
the Abarth will help boost sales of the 500, which has not met targets to
date.
Employee Review: “The company is extremely adaptable and resilient after
its financial distress in recent years, and the company is very hopeful for the
future. The need for young and creative people is overwhelming — those without
automotive background may be better positioned than they think!”*

8. Avis
Avis Budget Group, headquartered in Parsippany, N.J., is a leading vehicle
rental agency in North America, Australia, New Zealand and other regions that
the company serves. The company’s fleet has more than 350,000 vehicles and ABG
completed more than 23 million rental transactions in 2009.
Among the company’s efforts to streamline the car rental process is their
iPhone app, which allows customers to make, change or check reservations on the
go. The company is also keen on using surveys to solicit feedback. Such surveys
led them to be the first company in the industry to offer a completely
smoke-free fleet.
Avis Budget Group’s stock is currently on the upswing, with many market
analysts labeling it as one “to watch” due to recent high performance.
Employee Review: “You do get good health benefits and a company car.
Airports are the best places to work in this company….”*

9. Wal-Mart
With over 2 million employees worldwide, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the
largest private employer in the United States. The company has steadily grown
since founder Sam Walton opened the first Walmart-branded store in 1962.
Starting as a discount retail operation, the company has grown to include a
line of supercenters and a significant grocery operation.
The company is now so prevalent that over 170 million customers visit
Walmart stores around the world each week. In addition to its Walmart-branded
activities, the company owns and operates the Sam’s Club wholesale
centers.
The company plans to open 400 to 500 of its new Walmart Express grocery
stores across the nation. The plan should allow the company to expand into
neighborhoods that are not quite big enough for a regular-size Walmart.
Employee Review: “They were very flexible with my school schedule, and when
I left the company, the people in my department actually threw a party for me.
It was shocking! Walmart seemed to be very concerned about making sure employees
took their breaks (not something I was used to)….”*

10. Dell
Ranked No. 41 on the Fortune 500, Dell employs roughly 103,000 people
worldwide. Based in Round Rock, Texas, it is the sixth-largest company in Texas
based on total revenue. While the company focuses on personal computers and
servers, it also sells HDTVs, cameras and printers built by other manufacturers,
but under the Dell name.
Although the majority of its revenue comes from business customers, CEO
Michael Dell recently reported that Dell remains committed to the consumer
market as well. This follows recent announcements from rival HP, which is
considering a spinoff of its consumer PC brand.
Employee Review: “Company does have a good sense of business knowledge and
support. Dell is also large enough to provide for almost any employee’s needs.
Pay is above average and there are some opportunities for increases.”*

downtown as he does in Arlington Heights — at least for now :-) ; Congrats to

++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(flagship state school, flagship out-of-state school, non-flagship state school,
non-flagship out-of-state school, highly selective private college, midsize
private college and private college).

Big Four accounting firms. The company’s activities consist mainly in doing
financial audit work for other corporations.

acquisitions.
The company is one of 12 to receive the 2011 “Business Partner of the Year”

P&G suppliers, in part due to their high level of client/customer
service.

4. AT&T Retail
With over 96 million mobile customers, AT&T Wireless is the 20th
largest mobile phone service provider in the world, and according to Forbes, the
14th largest company in the world by market value.
AT&T’s mobile division is headquartered in DeKalb County, Ga., just

Cingular Wireless and BellSouth. Until recently, AT&T Wireless was the
exclusive carrier of Apple’s popular iPhone line in the United States.
AT&T is now one of three major wireless carriers, alongside Verizon and
Sprint, to feature Apple’s new iPhone 4S. Recent reports indicate that
AT&T’s wireless revenue has grown by over 4 percent versus last year.
Employee Review: “They provide great benefits and pay. I know they match

Holdings operates several other brands as well.
Sears is one of several retailers offering layaway service again, partly
due to recent economic conditions. The company was the ninth-largest retailer in
2010, behind other giants like Wal-Mart Stores, Target and Costco.

stability. The company has been around for over 100 years and is one of the
largest in the world. It has great benefits and work-life balance is excellent.

Florida NextGen Test Bed. The Test Bed, located in Daytona Beach, Fla., is a
laboratory where new aviation concepts may be tested. Additionally, Lockheed
