Cloud Computing- Practical Guide to What Belongs in the Cloud and What Doesn’t

You can’t ignore the fact that more organizations are turning to cloud based hosting of data. But a lot of questions still arise from this technology evolution.
Is it Safe?
What is a Hybrid Cloud?
What are the economics of cloud computing?
Will my hosting agent crash– if so where is my data?
Do I still need to keep some archive?
Can I reduce my IT staff by moving to the cloud?
What should I be looking for in a cloud provider?
Our panel will be answering these questions any many more.

Who knew? When regular reporting does not work because of months of being stonewalled, try satire and stand-up comedy.

Not only is Nancy Sullivan Jewish, she does stand-up….
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi, I’m Nancy Sullivan. I took over at the University of Illinois Chicago as the Director of the Office of Technology Management a few years ago. I replaced Mary Dicig who had been shown the door and who had made a few enemies in her short tenure here, and I also replaced the interim director David Gulley. David is a fixture at UIC. He’s been here for 25 or more years and every time he gets into a pickle, he manages to get out of it.

I do owe David Gulley one debt of gratitude. He headed up the study that justified my outrageous salary of $200,000. Truth be told, he wanted the job for himself.

But Brenda Russell took care of that for me. She wasn’t going to see David just glide into as cush job at a cushy salary.

Some people say I’m a witch and some say I’m a b****. Well, in some ways I’m both, but let me tell you why.

Here at the university, you can’t just fire someone. You have too many red tape issues to deal with and HR is far too confused to be counted on for anything.

When I started there were a few key people in the office. Mary Dicig had gotten rid of Lanny, Dan, and Phil. She re-orged them out the door.

One of the key people left when I came in was Dr. Connie Cleary. She’s not a real doctor, she’s a DPM, but she did know a lot about the medical field and most of our work here at UIC is related to the life sciences.

What’s a girl to do? I could not just fire her. So I decided to try out a tried and true method for getting rid of people: public humiliation.

My beef with Connie was that about seven or eight years ago, I applied for an intern’s job in the department.

Connie saw my resume and saw that it was pretty thin gruel and killed my application.

But one thing that Nancy Sullivan knows how to do is hold a grudge.

So, when I started, I told Connie that I remembered her diss from years ago and I told her this in front of a bunch of people. Connie broke down and cried. That was not the first or only time she cried in the office, but she ran to her protector David Gulley and he came to her rescue — which is just what I wanted.

By the way, officially Mary Dicig is my friend but that hasn’t stopped me from trashing her whenever it suits my purposes. Why should Mary care? She’s gone and I’m the boss now. You might say that backstabbing is a finely developed art of which I am a master.

So, David Gulley called his friend Matt Raymond at Rush Pres. St. Lukes and Matt phonied up some temporary position for Connie and off she went. Connie blew that pop stand for Argonne this year.

I figured that if it was that easy, I could get pretty good at this “off with their heads” thing.

Over the next week or two, I’ll tell you the story of how I got rid of a lot of others, and how I belittled them, how I harangued and harrassed them, and how I condescendingly over-ruled them.

Here are a few of the folks I’ll talk about.

Justyna Ciegotura and Nelson Grihalde replaced her
Dr. Jay Vijayan
Colin James
Shayan Sartipi
Mike Msaac
Denise Holland
Nicole Lynch
Melissa Miner
Jeff Norgle who resigned, but I conned him into coming back after I gave him more money.
Rachel Hodges-Spitsberg
Claudia Gatch Manaila
Alex Esparza
Patrick Coogan
Philip Bak
Kimberly White
David Kick

Here’s an example of my way of operating. On a certain occasion a professor was trying to establish his own firm and not disclose the technology to the university, as required by the Bayh Dole Act and by university policy. He came to the OTM on a legal matter. One of our people whom I won’t name right now who has a deep knowledge of patent law brought this to my attention and I told that person in my usual curt way, “Do what you would do in such a situation.”
You know, I’m very good at keeping my own skirts clean while I frame my underlings and make them stick their necks out. By the way, I let the professors get away with a lot of things that Mary Dicig did not allow and that is one reason Mary was shown the door. But I’ve had Ghosh wrapped around my little finger. I know, he’s gone now, but he was very much on board with my “look the other way” style. If you want to succeed in a place like UIC, don’t rock the boat, but more on that later.
Several graduate students who were infinitely more qualified than Jeremy Hollis, my chief flunkie. Hey, I tried to get Mark Krivchenia, and he was higher up on the org chart than Jeremy, but that does not matter to me, as my chief flunkie, but he turned me down.

Let’s not forget about my girlfriend Kathy Liu whom I hired despite the fact that there was a hiring freeze — hey, I’m pretty good at getting around the rules — but Kathy left within three months and went to California.

I have many stories to tell, but just to whet your whistle, Mike Isaac and the cell phone in the bathroom. They call me a witch — well, you decide.

My approach is to be most charming, most friendly, kind and a concerned UIC employee. To those who work under me, I won’t even be bothered to return a polite “hello” or “good afternoon.” It’s a kiss up, kick down attitude.

Scott Issen to run new 501(c)(3) for Future Founders under Brad Keywell — effectively a spin-off from the CEC

www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/chicagoland-entrepreneurial-center-and-brad-keywell-launch-future-founders-foundation-130352823.html

New partnership to grow youth entrepreneurship and career exploration programs
CHICAGO, Sept. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Brad Keywell, Co-Founder of Lightbank, and Kevin Willer, President & CEO, Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center (CEC) today joined entrepreneurial forces as they announced the Future Founders Foundation, a new nonprofit organization that will expand entrepreneurship and career exploration programs for underserved students in the Chicagoland area.
The new partnership, the Future Founders Foundation, combines the missions of the CEC’s Future Founders program and the Connect to the Future program, which was started by Brad Keywell. The Foundation will inspire teenagers to explore new careers and connect them with successful mentors from various business professions. During the 2011-12 school year, the organization will work with a dozen middle schools and high schools in Chicago.
“Future Founders has been a shining success for the CEC over the last six years,” said Kevin Willer, President & CEO, CEC. “This partnership will unlock the full potential of the program – especially with all of the great momentum in Chicago’s startup community.”
“The Foundation will enable us to scale Connect to the Future and provide more resources to the people who need them: our students,” said Brad Keywell. “We are excited to expand our mission – inspiring students by showing them the doors that are opened up through education, and bringing professionals from the community into classrooms to share their expertise and their stories.”
Brad Keywell is the Chairman of the Future Founders Foundation and the new Board of Directors includes Kevin Willer; Jim O’Connor, Jr., Managing Director, MVC Capital, Inc. and Co-Chairman, CEC; Phyllis Lockett, President & CEO, New Schools for Chicago and Mark Hoyt, CFO, International, Groupon. Scott Issen, Managing Director, CEC, is the President & CEO of the new organization.
“Nurturing tomorrow’s entrepreneurs and business leaders is critical to the continued success of Chicago’s economy,” said Scott Issen, President & CEO, Future Founders Foundation. “Through this partnership, we can expand our efforts and help more students discover what opportunities are possible and how they can achieve them.”
Future Founders provides motivated high school students in Chicago’s underserved neighborhoods the opportunity to learn about and experience entrepreneurship during the school year from some of the city’s most successful entrepreneurs. The goal of Future Founders is to expose students to entrepreneurial careers and have them create complete business plans. Since the program’s inception in 2005, Future Founders has provided over 7,000 hours of mentoring to 700 high school students on Chicago’s South and West Sides.
Connect to the Future unites middle school and high school students with successful entrepreneurs and business professionals from a variety of fields. Connect gives students a chance to ask questions, explore possibilities, and engage with potential role models who can validate the importance of hard work and the relevance of education to career success. Since the program’s inception in 2006, Connect to the Future has connected hundreds of professionals with students and classrooms in Chicago area middle schools and high schools.
Future Founders was created through a partnership between the CEC, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. The program is sponsored by the Motorola Solutions Foundation, AT&T, BMO Harris Bank, CME Group Foundation, the Ford Motor Company Fund, Microsoft, the Motorola Mobility Foundation and Smart Bet Charity, in partnership with the SME Education Foundation, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Business Administration and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Connect to the Future was created based on the experience of a local entrepreneur who adopted a classroom at Jenner School for the Arts, a Chicago Public School, for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years. This successful program involved the entrepreneur adopting a 5th and 6th grade classroom, and bringing over a dozen different professionals to enlighten the students about the possibilities that await them in the world. When word got out about this program, there was extensive interest from many entrepreneurs and professionals wanting to volunteer their time and get involved. The Connect program is a response to this interest, and provides an organized and professional format in which Resources can connect with students to share their success.

Business risk management is often overlooked. But insufficient risk management can lead to serious loss of revenue and a damaged reputation. Risk management can pertain to business threats from natural, unforeseen events such as fires, floods and accidents. But those are not the only risks to consider. Join us November 10th for “Uncovering Business Vulnerabilities and Mitigating Risk”. This seminar will focus on risks to business operations, systems and processes. By identifying and addressing risks, we will help you recognize the vulnerabilities in your business and show you how to minimize the impact and keep your business on track.
