Ron,
As you know, Governor Quinn recently launched Advantage Illinois, the DCEO enhanced portfolio of lending and venture capital programs, to help small businesses gain much-needed access to capital. TechAmerica was thrilled to participate in the recent press conference announcing this important program and we are committed to supporting the effort. I specifically wanted to make sure your technology readers were aware of the upcoming training webinars on October 20 and 21 that will focus on this new lending initiative with the state.
I’ve included the link to register and more details below. Thank you.
REGISTER: advantageillinois.eventbrite.com.
More details:
The number one challenge small businesses face in today’s economy is gaining the funds they need to start or run their business. Governor Pat Quinn recently launched Advantage Illinois, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s enhanced portfolio of lending and venture capital programs, to help small businesses gain much-needed access to capital.
There has never been a better time to grow Illinois ideas or business! Register for the webinar and learn more about:
• Capital Access Program (CAP) assists businesses with various financing needs. It is designed to encourage financial institutions to make loans to small and new businesses that do not qualify under conventional lending policies.
• Participation Loan Program (PLP) supports businesses with projects that create or retain jobs and/or modernize their businesses to improve competitiveness. One component of the program is devoted to Minority/Women/Disabled/Veteran-Owned businesses (MWDV PLP). The state purchases and subordinates part of the loan to help mitigate lender risk.
• Collateral Support Program (CSP) establishes savings accounts or CDs that provide cash collateral support to lending institutions to enhance the equity and/or loan collateral levels of small business borrowers.
• Invest Illinois Venture Fund Program (IIVF) is a new venture capital program to support young, innovative companies in Illinois that show high growth potential, can demonstrate their place in the market and already have other investors.
Businesses interested in receiving loans from these programs are encouraged to visit their local Illinois SBDC for assistance to ensure that they have their financial and business plan materials in order before their bank is enrolled. Use the Find a Location button to locate your nearest office. You may also view the archived “Starting a Business” Webinars on Illinois workNet, click here to watch!

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your voice message. As stated in our event rules and guidelines, electronic devices such as cell phones, cameras and computers are prohibited from use on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course. It is a participant safety issue, as participants should not be distracted while on the course, putting themselves and those around them at risk of injury. According to that rule, Tweeting from the course would also be prohibited. The rule is difficult to police among 40,000 participants, made more difficult by the fact that while music devices/headphones are permitted, devices such as iPods and iPhones function not only as music players, but as phones, computers, cameras, video recorders, etc. However, if we receive a complaint from a participant that they were put in harm’s way or somehow impeded by another participant using an electronic device, or if a race official is made aware of a participant safety issue involving the use of an electronic device, we will review the situation and it may result in the disqualification of that individual.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Randy Michaels, the Tribune Co. chief executive ousted last year after cultivating a “frat house” atmosphere at the historic newspaper company, was arrested on drunken driving charges after driving his car into the mud at 2 a.m. in Cincinnati.
The executive, who now runs a radio company, was arrested by police who found him stuck under an overpass on Friday, his car mired in mud and water up to the frame.
The police report said Michael’s eyes were bloodshot and he was described as “unsteady” on his feet. He also failed three sobriety field tests, including walking in a straight line. Michaels could not touch his heel to toe while walking and could not stand on one leg for more than three or four seconds, according to the report.
According to Cincinnati.com, Michaels refused an alcohol breath test. He was charged with driving on a road that was closed and released from jail after posting bond.
Michaels, whose real name is apparently Benjamin Homel, was brought in to Tribune by owner Sam Zell in 2007 to remake the newspaper company.
He remade it scandalously, not only by slashing staff and bringing in cronies from his radio background, but by promoting an atmosphere that led to allegations of sexual misconduct and charges that Michaels promoted what many referred to as a “frat house” atmosphere at the Tribune Company.
He was forced out a year ago, shortly after a lengthy New York Times investigative article exposed the culture of the Tribune under his leadership.

HI Ron.
Smart Grids could be worth some critical discussion among your readers.
I’d be interested in hearing their views and ruminations.
It may be timely with the upcoming event to consider which elements of the
grid activity/concept are truly relevant to university research, which to
climate and energy efficiency, and which to advancing electric commodity
trading at the expense of consumers. The truth lies somewhere in the
details which are indeed complex, but too few people are taking time to
root out the motivations of industry players who seek to gain R&D
advantage and profit on the backs of tax payers who are already paying
out-of-control utility prices. Maybe I’ve had a bit too much OWS this
week, but the energy industry has been irking me ever since de-regulation
in 1996 and even more so since Enron’s fiasco. I am afraid that the “smart
grid”, beyond its theoretical nobility, may turn out to be a very large
and unwieldy and very naked emperor.
Best regards from Sweden, the land of great innovations like Spotify, Saab
Jets, IKEA, and H&M, but sadly is, in the form of Vattenfall, also leading
the energy oligopoly in Europe along with our friends from Eon in Germany.
Mary

Hi!
You may have heard that Apple and Hallmark announced today a new app that will allow iPhone and iPad users to send paper greeting cards directly to friends from their phone. What a great service!!!
I am writing to suggest that a closer look be taken at paper greeting card trends. While most of us connect via email, facebook, and twitter on a daily basis there is something to be said about taking the time to send a card in the mail to a friend or family member. This recent announcement by Apple and Hallmark along with the fact that there are several other amazing paper greeting card companies out there, proves that traditional mail service is not dead and that people are still desiring that “old school” connection!
While Apple and Hallmark are certainly a leader in their respective industries there are other amazing companies that have even more unique services for those who want to send a paper greeting card to brighten someone’s day!”
Take for instance our client, Greeting Card Universe www.greetingcarduniverse.com . This site not only allows you to fully customize over 500,000 paper greeting cards FOR FREE but they also offer cards in categories that most people never thought imaginable! For $3.00 or less one can send a paper greeting card that is completely customized to a friend in 24-48 hours!
Greeting Card Universe is the ONLY paper greeting card store that has the ability for a customer to not only find a card in any category imaginable but also allows the customer to fully customize the card. Categories of cards include but are not limited to:
Job Loss Sympathy Cards www.greetingcarduniverse.com/Occasions-Encouragement-Work+Career-Unemployment+Lost+Job
Gay Coming out/Announcements: www.greetingcarduniverse.com/Announcements-Coming+Out+Gay+Lesbian
We’Ve Eloped: www.greetingcarduniverse.com/Announcements-Elopement+Weve+Eloped

Hello Ron,
I am sorry that we missed you on Friday. Their was an unscheduled move from the Underground to Rockit due to the size of the party. It would have been very difficult to get around due to your wheelchair. The party was moved to the top floor. The next event will not be so difficult for you to maneuver.
Separately, I would love to set up a time for you to speak with cheapINK about their new website and mobile application. Also they were able to raise almost 2300 for Literacy Chicago Friday evening and had between 125-150 attend the party.
Please let me know what a good time would be to follow-up with you. We have availability even this morning.

Tracy McGrady Pledges to Expand Sister Schools Program in support of Darfuri Youth
WASHINGTON – NBA star and humanitarian Tracy McGrady made a commitment to scale up direct online communication between U.S. students and children in Darfuri refugee camps. McGrady works with the Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program to foster cross-cultural understanding and engage U.S. youth in advocacy and fundraising to improve the quality of education for their Darfuri counterparts. A member of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), McGrady made the pledge at the recent CGI’s annual meeting.
The Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program was created after McGrady visited Darfuri refugee camps in eastern Chad with John Prendergast and Omer Ismail of the Enough Project. He returned with a mission to support the Darfuri refugees and, in that spirit, the program raises funds for quality primary education in the camps and builds mutually beneficial relationships between U.S schools and the Darfuri refugee students.
“When I was in the camps, every parent I talked to desperately wanted their child to receive an education and I was moved to help them achieve that dream,” McGrady said. “This commitment will take us one step closer to fulfilling that promise of providing quality education to Darfuri refugee children.”
McGrady was selected for CGI membership because of his humanitarian work and saw this as an opportunity to expand the DDT Sister School Program’s innovative efforts to foster connections between American and Darfuri students to generate greater understanding and action for the issues faced by displaced African youth.
“The Sister Schools Program fills a critical gap in funding education in refugee camps while at the same time making real connections between students in the camps and students in U.S. schools,” said John Prendergast, Co-founder of the Enough Project. “The program enriches young people on both sides of the ocean and fills a huge hole in the international response to refugee populations.”
As the program scales up its efforts with this commitment, fundraising continues with the support of schools and other donors throughout the U.S. to deliver quality primary education to Darfuri refugee children.
About the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI)
Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
Since 2005, CGI Annual Meetings have brought together nearly 150 current and former heads of state, 18 Nobel Prize laureates, hundreds of leading CEOs, heads of foundations, major philanthropists, directors of the most effective nongovernmental organizations, and prominent members of the media. These CGI members have made nearly 2,000 commitments, which have already improved the lives of 300 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued in excess of $63 billion. The 2011 Annual Meeting took place Sept. 20-22 in New York City. www.clintonglobalinitiative.org.
About Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program
The Darfur Dream Team is a dynamic partnership of organizations and professional basketball players working together on the Sister Schools Program, an initiative linking American middle schools, high schools and universities with 12 schools in 2 Darfuri refugee camps in eastern Chad. The Program works to provide a quality education to every refugee child from Darfur and, develop personal connections between students from Darfur and the United States that promote mutual understanding.
If you would rather not receive future communications from Enough Project, let us know by clicking here.

There is a Right Way and a Wrong Way to Dispose of Old Computers
Disposing of Your Outdated Desktop in an Environmentally Sound Way
According to The National Recycling Coalition, around 500 million computers in the United States become obsolete every ten years. This statistic suggests that almost twice as many laptops, desktops, and notebooks will become outdated in the next decade than there are people living in America today. Although computers account for just a small fraction of everything thrown away nationwide on a daily basis, the hazardous nature of the parts used in their assembly makes responsible handling of these materials especially important.
The average monitor alone contains mercury, arsenic, several pounds of lead, and a number of other dangerous chemicals that should not simply be thrown in a landfill indefinitely. Karl Volkman of Chicago-based SRV Network, Inc. has a few tips for getting your technological relic out of the house without destroying the environment:
Donate – Even the most ancient PCs can often be updated and used long after more advanced machines are put on the market. Several organizations are dedicated to doing exactly that, and redistributing the equipment to schools and other non-profit groups that may not be able to afford new computers. Search the web for The National Cristina Foundation, The Assistive Technology Exchange Network, and Computers for Schools to find out how you can part ways with your old, seemingly useless object while contributing to a worthwhile cause.
Recycle – Although computers can be dangerous when left in the average garbage dump until the end of time, there are environmentally friendly alternative methods to properly disassembling and recycling their components. Many companies offer this service to individuals and businesses, usually for a small fee. MRK Ltd., Intercon Solutions, and Staples Office Supply Store are just a few trusted names in the industry.
Take it Back – Sometimes the best way to get rid of something you can’t bear to find in the attic gathering dust ever again is to bring it back to the people who sold it to you in the first place. IBM and Hewlett Packard both have in-house computer recycling services. Dell even does it free of charge.
To arrange an interview with Karl Volkman about responsible computer disposal, please contact me directly.
Best,
Lindsay
