What should I be looking for in a cloud provider?
Our panel will be answering these questions any many more.

October 12, 2011
The May Report: 10/12/2011: Former CEO of Motorola Robert Galvin has died — I saw him speak and he was a very impressive guy; I don’t know what to say except tell the truth: I’ve been major league depressed for 3 days since Sunday night: on Monday an unmasked visitor appeared about 4pm and left at 11:30pm; meanwhile, I have a new computer (wi-fi laptop Toshiba that I think comes from Julian Pretto’s operation) that I cannot figure out how to use! and that visitor, thinking that he’s doing me a favor which he probably is but I can’t see it that way right now, has tried to ween me off of AOL — after 16 years! — but I, like many people, am a creature of habit and this has thrown me for a huge loop, plus I can barely see the screen; rather than going back to sleep which I’ve been mostly doing for two days now, I’ll try to stay up and get a few reports out; The Momentum Awards dinner was very well attended with 918 people — 400 more than last time; they raised over $1MM and that total included more than $80K in texted contributions that were flashed on the big screen; News: Scott Issen is leaving the CEC to run a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is focused on Future Founders and it will be backed by Brad Keywell, all this as Kevin Willer continues to belt tighten and sharpen the focus of the CEC; I hardly met most of the folks there but one thing did come through to me: Lightbank is not the only game in town when it comes to when it comes to early stage funding: Fusion Ventures out of San Diego invested in S. A. Ignite and two commodities brokers plus F&F put $1.7MM into a firm that tracks bar traffic in real time using cameras, w/ 56 bars so far; Jason Goodrich and his team are looking for $750K and much more, so it may be that Lightbank just has a better PR machine, but I don’t know enough yet to draw any conclusions… Plus a Mike Rhodes sighting…

Jay Marhoefer: Update on what Intelligent Generation is doing
Subject: RE: Jay, please give us a quickie update on your current and future projects?
Date: 10/16/2011 11:02:23 A.M. Central Daylight Time
From: jay@intelgen.com
To: RONALDMAY@aol.com
Intelligent Generation just went live with its first pilot a test, a residential home in Wilmette. We are able to remotely control charge and discharge of a battery that is part of the home’s solar configuration. This means we can systematically control storing power in the battery when it is cheap or free, and using it (instead of the grid) when power is expensive. The ramifications of this for Illinois are the following. First, IG makes solar energy affordable. IG creates economics that allow a) solar on the roof for no upfront cost, b) savings on the electricity bill, and c) backup power when the lights go out. By way of example, 10,000 IG-equipped solar homes and 1,000 commercial buildings are equivalent to bringing a coal-fired power plant online immediately, the difference being that our power is clean.
We move from here to our next pilots, which includes a second home and our first small commercial application. From there, we move to a 10-20 home pilot that allows us to demonstrate the economic benefits of our network. In the meantime, IG was selected as one of 15 venture-ready companies to pitch at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Industry Growth Forum (IGF) in Denver next month. Since 2003, presenting companies at the IGF have procured more than $4 billion in investment capital.
The Great Lakes Smart Grid Symposium is this Tuesday and Wednesday at IIT. We plan to give interested parties a tour of our lab and demo of our technology.

Dear Friends,
We’ve all been to film festivals, but how about a filmLESS festival? Yes, it sounds like a crazy idea: Sit in a room and listen to some of the world’s best audio stories. The Third Coast International Audio Festival (I’m a proud board member!) brings exceptional stories to audiences on the air each week on the radio program “Re:sound” on WBEZ. The Third Coast Filmless Festival (TCFF) is a day-long celebration of story, sound and the art of listening. Now in its third year, the TCFF has drawn sell-out crowds of radio fans who gather in darkened theaters for “audio screenings” of unforgettable documentaries. Like the best film festivals, the TCFF is a mecca for audiences who may spend the entire day attending screenings, meeting the world’s top radio producers and learning more about the craft of audio storytelling.
The 2011 TCFF will take place in Chicago on Sunday, October 23rd at the Joffrey Ballet building, 10 East Randolph. Audiences will choose among five separate screenings, each organized around a theme and carefully curated to encompass a variety of styles, emotional impact, and artistry. Jonathan Goldstein of the comedy program “Wire Tap” will perform and festivities will culminate in the evening with our Awards Ceremony honoring the winners of the 2011 Third Coast / Richard H Driehaus Foundation Competition. Passes are now on sale at www.thirdcoastfestival.org/happenings/filmless-festival.
Hope you can come and listen with me — and bring a friend.
Best,
Lee

Colleagues,
In November or December I will be writing a long blog on FCC National Broadband Plan National Need #4 Energy and the Environment. This will address issues of a World of Working Watersheds, including linking transportation, energy and productive urban design (even in rural areas) to provide families, businesses and communities “tools for good choices” linked together by Community Anchor Institutions – Businesses, Community Institutions and Public agencies. Such tools include linking advanced communications with smart grid, smart water management, public works asset-building and service assembly applications.
With this as background, please find information below on the Great Lakes Symposium on Smart Grid & the New Energy Economy to be held at IIT. It is organized by Mohammad Shahidehpour of IIT, and sent to me by Ruth Sweetzer, copied on this message, whose contact information involving IIT Business and Industry activities is at:

Dear friend,

Session Overview
The Marketing Roundtable welcomes Jennifer Howard, Google Industry Director, Education as our speaker for the October 27, 2011 event. Jennifer will focus on a new e- book (Zero Moment of Truth) just released by Google.
The way we shop is changing and marketing strategies are simply not keeping pace. Whether we’re shopping for corn flakes, concert tickets or a honeymoon in Paris, the Internet has changed how we decide what to buy. Today we’re all digital explorers, seeking out online ratings, social media-based peer reviews, videos, and in-depth product details as we move down the path to purchase. Marketing has evolved and modern marketing strategies have to evolve with the changing shape of shopping.
At Google, we call this online decision-making moment the Zero Moment of Truth — or simply ZMOT.
If you’re a marketer, a CEO, a sales rep, or an aspiring entrepreneur, these marketing strategies and the ZMOT will help you understand the shift that has taken place in the marketing landscape and show you the strategies it takes to win
.
About Our Speaker
Jennifer Howard leads the Education Sales & Operations practice nationally. In this role she is responsible for developing strategic partnerships with Education Marketers to help them generate leads, increase brand awareness and drive enrollments. In her 8 years at Google, Jennifer has worked with a variety of sectors including BtoB, Automotive and Technology.

WHAT ARE PAST ATTENDEES OF THE FUNDING FEEDING FRENZY EVENTS SAYING?
Hello,
Our goal is to provide the highest quality experience for our attendees. There’s only one way to make sure we do that…we ask your honest opinions.
We’ve received tremendous feedback from our numerous events, but rather than tell you how great we are and how valuable our events will be for you, we prefer to let other attendees and participants give you their opinion.
We’re extremely confident that you’ll have such a great experience at the Funding Feeding Frenzy, that you’ll want to come back every time. However, if you’re still deciding if the Funding Feeding Frenzy is the right place for you to be on Nov. 2 2011, please read what one of our most recent Presenting Companies had to say.
Company: CuteyBaby, LLC
Presenter: Ada Vaughan, Founder/President
ada@cuteybaby.com
Describe your company and what makes you special.
CuteyBaby designs, manufactures, and distributes hybrid baby diapers in the US. We are the only company in our space solely focused on entering mass retail channels. Our goal is to reach the most moms possible in brick-and-mortar retail, and to legitimize washable diapers as an option for modern moms. In the last year we have gained distribution in Meijer, HEB, Costco, and online with Amazon.com and BabiesRUs.com.
Question: What are your biggest “wows”?
In the last year we have gained distribution in Meijer, HEB, Costco, and online with Amazon.com and BabiesRUs.com.
Did you know it costs around $2,500 to buy disposable diapers for one child from birth to potty training? Until recently, most moms just swallowed this fact, along with all the harmful chemicals in disposables and the obvious – generating mountains of trash. CuteyBaby answers this problem with a system that works as well as disposables, looks adorable, and saves parents thousands of dollars.
For less than $500 and a little extra laundry, mom can get a set of hybrid washable diapers – and save TWO GRAND.
Question: How did the Funding Feeding Frenzy (FFF) help your company?
I think it was pretty validating. We have a solid business idea and have entered a very large marketplace ($5.7billion US diaper market). The panelists seemed to “get it” and they liked that we had some distribution already. We also have taken advantage of several contacts for business advice and legal counsel. It was super to have some free time with experts both at the event, and when we redeemed our FFF freebies from winning in the Piranha Pond. It also helped me understand the roles of different companies and individuals in the funding process (i.e. matchmakers, funds, angels, etc.).
Question: Why did you choose to come to the FFF?
Really wanted to make some contacts in the Chicago area. We had been in discussions with some West Coast investors, and wanted to see if there was a more local source of capital, perhaps with some CPG roots.
Question: What were your expectations going into the FFF?
Wanted to understand who the major players were in Chicago and what kind of investments are happening. The biggest challenge for us is that we are a traditional (non-tech, non-biotech) consumer products company. Our goal was to meet 10 potential investors, resulting in 5 post-FFF meetings. We ended up getting 4 Post – FFF meetings, ultimately.
Question: What advice would you give to companies considering future FFF’s?
Make sure you can explain your business very quickly and as simplistically as possible. We had everything from carbon nanotubes to baby slings at the event in May – sometimes it’s hard to step away from the “cool” factor of your product and describe the BUSINESS.
My background is in marketing, so I always say to make sure you can answer the questions….
How do (or will) you make money?
Who is going to buy from you?
How will they find out about you?
Why will they buy from you instead of a competitor?
Oh, and I’d stay away from deal-a-day online coupon concepts. ![]()
Thanks for the opportunity to chat about FFF – it really is a quality event and I highly recommend it for any entrepreneur who wants to put their idea to the test and get some honest feedback. – Ada Vaughan, Founder & President – CuteyBaby, LLC

Colleagues,
On September 16 I had the pleasure of attending two Broadband 101 sessions at Illinois Municipal League annual conference in Chicago, which were organized with the aid of Partnership for a Connected Illinois and Illinois Broadband Deployment Council. I got an update of how governments are “improving performance” in civic and economic productivity as they design and build “sustainable” broadband as a part of public works.
These success stories of the “impact” of broadband lead off my “government performance” blog linked here: broadbandillinois.org/news/71
The graphic to illustrate government-private sector cooperation in financing and using Fiber, Wireless and Public Works utilities was commissioned from Charles Boyce’s KeyPad Kid Project. www.facebook.com/pages/The-KeyPad-Kid-Project/75815548937?sk=wall The picture shows a smart KeyPad Kid on a Backhoe, working with local officials at a groundbreaking. Its caption (omitted due to size) reads: Groundbreaking for “one trench & one tower” utilities – water, power, gas, communications and transportation. Cutting costs and time, and raising revenue from civic virtual infrastructure, right-of-way cooperation and data sharing.
I hope you enjoy the article, and share with interested colleagues. Several of its “next step” recommendations will be considered next week at the PCI-hosted Regional Broadband Summit in Champaign October 12-13.
I also hope you’ll take a look at Partnership for a Connected Illinois’ increasingly graphic and photo-story format website. See September 30 news on new broadband mapping data, now using 2010 census block data, as part of the every-6-month upgrade of broadband availability and speed maps.
broadbandillinois.org/index.html
Let me, or PCI Impact Director Bob Flider, know your thoughts. Including whether you would like to be a PCI guest blogger to share “what works” in investing in sustainable broadband infrastructure and services to improve businesses, lives and community economic development.
The KeyPad Kid graphic is copyright 2011 Community Life Initiative * The Keypad Kid Project. Please contact Charles Boyce or Layton Olson if you would like to use it, including in power point presentations.

Tonight: An Entrepreneurs Story Jeffrey (Jeff) Weber
Tonight we are excited to have Jeffrey (Jeff) Weber
Have you ever thought about starting your own company? Are you in the midst
of a start up or already have a venture running? Business ownership is a
tremendous opportunity that few get to experience for a variety of reasons.
Your chances of taking an idea to reality improve greatly with the more you
know and the greater connected you are to resources. Learn how you can self
assess your own ideas to see if they match the Entrepreneurial FormulaT that
entrepreneur and author Jeff Weber created so individuals will know when
they are ready to activate as an entrepreneur. Weber shares how an idea
passes two defining moments, the Entrepreneurial Formula and an
individual’s Risk Box before becoming actionable.
Hear Jeff’s remarkable journey from starting his business in a basement and
growing it into a multi-million dollar venture that he eventually sold to a
Fortune 100 company. Weber currently is very active in numerous
entrepreneurial organizations in Chicago that support start ups from
coaching, advisory boards to funding preparation and sourcing. He is: an
adjunct faculty at the college level teaching entrepreneurism, volunteers
for youth entrepreneurship groups and is a founding member of the advisory
board at Judson University established to create an entrepreneurism
certification program for the School of Business. Most recently, Weber
helped create “High Growth Illinois”, an effort funded by the Small Business
Administration and located out of the Harper College Professional Center to
support high growth entrepreneurial firms in Illinois. Weber is in the
midst of starting his third company.
This is your night to learn how you can launch or grow you’re an existing
firm. No hidden agenda, no gimmicks. The format will allow for your
questions to be answered by Jeff so come prepared to get answers to all of
the issues that have been holding you back.
Speakers bio:
Jeffrey Weber earned his MBA from Chicago’s Loyola University School of
Business and entered the technology industry during the start of the dot com
era. The company he founded grew rapidly earning a rank on INC magazine’s
“Top 500 Fastest Growing Private US Companies” list in 2001 and 2002. He
successfully positioned and sold that company to a Fortune 100 in 2006.
As an author, Weber incorporates his entrepreneurial knowledge and
proprietary methodologies into his book, “From Idea to Exit: The
Entrepreneurial Journey”. He is an adjunct faculty teaching entrepreneurism
at the college level, speaker, and coach for start-ups, existing
small/medium size businesses, and corporations wishing to innovate and
establish an entrepreneurial spirit. Weber serves on the advisory board for
Minorities in Technology Sales (MiTS). He volunteers for Future Founders,
Illinois Institute for Entrepreneurship Education and The National
Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) which help high school youth
explore entrepreneurism as a career path.
Currently, Jeff is assisting Judson University architect a new
entrepreneurism program, he is an angel investor and is very active in the
entrepreneurial ecosystem within Chicago.
Remember that there is always a question and answer session at the end of
the program

Right off the bat, the Judge will get a poor impression of the whole thing.
What a shame.
Keep up your great work and take even greater care of your health.
