The May Report: 8/10/2011: I saw Neil Kane at TechWeek — I teased him about how he wasn’t in the TechWeek 100; & I saw Bob Geras at the SAB poker charity June 18th and Bob did say that there would be big news on ADT in two weeks which turned out to be the $5.2MM in VC funding and my headline was that the Russians are coming; both Bob & Neil were at Built in Chicago June 23rd, as usual leaving together; I didn’t expect, although for yrs we’ve waited for the axe to drop on Neil, not because he’s a bad guy — this isn’t an Al Wasserberger situation — but because that’s the normal evolution of start-ups esp. when real venture money comes in; unfortunately, at 2:08am — I just saw the release less than an hr ago — my chief headline writer Steve Lundin is getting his ‘beauty’ sleep so sadly I have to think for myself: We do have a two-fer here, — both Geras & Kane get it: So, what’s it gonna be? ‘Brown-noser in chief Neil Kane canned at ADT’, or better yet, ‘Brown-noser in chief Neil Kane gets his nose cut off’; or ‘Dawn Geras, tired of waiting for hubby Bob to lose weight at 248 lbs., tells him to go on a diet and Bob decides to get rid of the main thing that keeps him up at night — he cans Neil Kane’; you know, I’m lousy at this, but here’s the real headline: “Neil Kane polished up that handle so carefullee, That now he’s not the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!”

THE MAY REPORT seeks as much information as it can gather about the history of the business dealings of Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell. It is not just dirt — dirt is good and we’ll take as much as you can dish out –but it’s much more than that.
I’m looking for good things too. If you agree with Steve Kaplan of ChicagoBooth that Eric Lefkofsky is the greatest entrepreneur in the country in the last decade I want to hear from you too, but I’ll want to know why you believe that. .
I want to know how they make decisions, what issues they consider, what questions they ask in making decisions and formulating tactics and strategy, how long they take, whosr opinions the seek, what books and magazines they read, what their style of management is, how smart they are — or how dumb –and we can include the accounting methods fiasco in the Groupon S-1 in the discussion.
I want to piece together a complete taxonomy and anatomy, and a complete understanding of personalities and dynamics.
If you have had any dealings with them — and this dates back to Brandon Apparel and Starbelly and HA-LO days so we are not just talking Inner Workings or Echo Logistics or of course Groupon and Lightbank –contact me on a confidential basis at ronaldmay@aol.com or better yet, call me at 773-525-3944

Briefly noted, by Ron May
* Right off the bat, I lost an email for no explainable reason. I was opening it and the header was “Terry Sullivan”, the name of the lawyer defending Craig Nelson in the assault case with Brian Connolly. It was sent to ron@themayreport.com and that goes into my gmail account. But poof, as I opened it, it disappeared right before my eyes!
If you sent it, please call me at 773-525-3944 and send the email to ronaldmay@aol.com which turns out to be a somewhat more reliable account than gmail.
* How did you like that headline? I always knew I was a rambler. Well, in all seriousness, Neil Kane has done yeoman’s work. He identified a potential business when he was at the ITEC at Argonne National Labs and he was one of a very small group that showed interest in what was going on there from a technology commercialization standpoint when most of the attention was focused on the University of Chicago and on UIUC in Champaign. Neil crossed some lines to make ADT his primary mission even though he took flack from Alan Thomas, Bob Rosenberg, and Lori Clark and me for it, but he had a vision and he stuck to it and the results are a suite of technologies that have a lot of potential. Nonetheless, it still has some distance to go to become a full fledged stand alone cash profitable firm. We all know that at the end of the day, ADT may be a diversified portfolio of technologies that are utilized in many industries. Who knows? It may end up getting split up or sold off in parts or licensing its technologies.
In any event, Neil has been a stick-with-it guy and remember, he had to teach himself the nanotech world. He had worked for IBM and for Microsoft and he even had a stint with his cousin, David Weinstein, at BlueMeteor. My hat is off to Neil for his determination and his diplomatic skills. He had to deal with some difficult personalities like Dieter Gruen at Argonne who was the chief scientist in the group that developed the technology at Argonne. Dieter was known to be tough to deal with and there was some resentment that Neil was “horning in” on his territory. If Neil was horning in, it was not a hit and run deal.
One of Dieter’s guys, John Carlisle, is ADT’s chief technology officer now and he has been for quite some time. Hats also off to Bob Geras who invested in ADT when no one else showed interest. Tom Churchwell at least knew biotech which helped a lot in many of his investments and Tom really understood the space. What did Bob Geras know about nanotechnology?
Before there was any funding from Bob Geras, before there was even a corporate entity or a license from Argonne, there was Neil Kane at the ITEC. The words “Advanced Diamond” appear in 147 documents in the TMR archives. The first reference I find is 2/14/2003 when Jeff Meredith and I met with Neil at The Bagel to discuss the issues at that time.
So, if this firm becomes an overnight success, it was a night that lasted at least eight and a half years! And for that entire time, Neil Kane and John Carlisle were involved in the technology and then the company. And I did say company, not business, for a reason. For years, the question has been raised: Is ADT great technology or a set of technologies in search of a viable business?
They call it proof of concept in business school — is that right Linda Darragh, Ellen Rudnick, Waverly Deutsch, Steve Kaplan, Scott Meadow, and others at Polsky and ChicagoBooth?
It sounds to me as though ADT is well along on the proof of concept curve.
There were many twists and turns. If my memory is right, there was a time when ADT was talking to the Koch brothers for possible funding. That deal was botched and Neil took the hit on it.
Neil has an MBA from Chicago even though he once told me the hilarious story of how he is one of the few MBAs they have ever granted who spent very little time actually on campus.
Neil invested time and effort in learning nanotech as a space just when it was getting off the ground and even then, many people felt it was just a marketing term and not a clearly defined business model.
Lots of people flirted with the nanotech craze — Nik Rokop and David Jacobson come to mind — but a few guys with an IT or consulting background like Neil Kane and Sean Murdoch made it their primary focus and made the shift in fields.
Bob Geras deserves kudos for having gotten involved with a technology that few people understood and a very long time horizon. ADT was never a dot com and it is no Groupon. The curve is certainly not a hockey stick.
But let me not gloss over this or polish the knob because I don’t want to be the ruler of the Queen’s Navee and if you don’t know that is a reference to Gilbert and Sullivan, look it up.
Here are the lyrics from HMS Pinafore and they list the names of and show the pictures of various actors over the years who have played Sir Joseph dating back to 1878. It is just amazing how true these words ring today, just as they did then.

No. 9: SONG (Sir Joseph & Chorus)
“When I was a lad”
———————————————————-
Sir Joseph. George Grossmith as Sir Joseph, 1878
When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an Attorney’s firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,
And I polished up the handle of the big front door.
Chorus.
He polished up the handle of the big front door.
Sir Joseph.
I polished up that handle so carefullee
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
He polished up that handle so carefullee,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Henry Lytton as Sir Joseph 1920
Sir Joseph.
As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk.
I served the writs with a smile so bland,
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand.
Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a big round hand.
Sir Joseph.
I copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Martyn Green as Sir Joseph, 1930
Sir Joseph.
In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became;
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the pass examination at the Institute.
Chorus.
For the pass examination at the Institute.
Sir Joseph.
That pass examination did so well for me,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
That pass examination did so well for he,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Peter Pratt as Sir Joseph, 1953
Sir Joseph.
Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership.
And that junior partnership, I ween,
Was the only ship that I ever had seen.
Chorus.
Was the only ship that he ever had seen.
Sir Joseph.
But that kind of ship so suited me,
That now I am the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
But that kind of ship so suited he,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
John Reed as Sir Joseph, 1961
Sir Joseph.
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party’s call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.
Chorus.
He never thought of thinking for himself at all.
Sir Joseph.
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!
James Conroy-Ward as Sir Joseph, 1980
Sir Joseph.
Now landsmen all, whoever you may be,
If you want to rise to the top of the tree,
If your soul isn’t fettered to an office stool,
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.
Chorus.
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.
Sir Joseph.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen’s Navee!
Chorus.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen’s Navee!

I just love those lines!
It would appear from the fact that Neil’s name does not appear anywhere in the press release that Neil has been fired.
Look at what the release does not say. It does not refer to Neil. It does not say he has become the chairman. It refers to Bob Geras as the chairman. The last time I saw a reference to Bob Geras as Chairman was with Arryx when Bob stepped in and fired Lew Gruber who had been the founder and CEO.
I could be dead wrong on this, but my gut feeling — which is often dead right — is that there is a reason for Neil’s name to be completely omitted.
I can’t say “and now for the rest of the story” since I don’t know it, but I can say, “And now in other news…”
* Kevin Willer’s wife Victoria gave birth on Monday, August 1st, to baby girl. Kevin and I are having breakfast at The Bagel on Friday. Congratulations Victoria and Kevin!
* John Roberson has left the CEC and I noticed that his name was not on the staff directory. I find this June 30th press release confusing and will ask Kevin about it since he sent me the link to it.
So Roberson is working at the Chamber now as he did before but now it’s being paid for by DCEO?
My question to Kevin: Did you just not have a place for John or why else do you need a new organization in the same location as the CEC to do what the CEC is supposed to be doing in the first place? I think that is a fair question.

News Description
One Stop Shop for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economy Opportunity (DCEO) announced today, during Illinois Small Business Week, that it has finalized an agreement with the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce to host an Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Illinois SBDC at the Chicagoland Chamber will be open for business on July 1, 2011 and will serve as a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
“The Illinois SBDC network is the first place entrepreneurs and small businesses should go when they’re looking to take the next step,” said Warren Ribley, Director of DCEO. “We are excited about the strength and support that the Chicagoland Chamber brings to the network. They will be able to provide more clients with strong support across sectors, as well as exposure to large local and international stakeholders. Together, we can accelerate the results that create revenue, jobs and company growth in Chicago.”
The Illinois SBDC at the Chicagoland Chamber will focus its energies and connections by leveraging the assets of both the Chamber and Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center (CEC). Like the other 35 Illinois SBDC locations statewide, they will assist start-ups, along with maturing firms, to build confidence in their product or service. Services will include start-up business planning assistance, guidance on accessing business financing, help with market research and marketing plan development, assistance with developing new markets and linkages to additional resources.
The Chicagoland Chamber will also host the newest designated Illinois SBDC International Trade Centers (ITC). Illinois has doubled the number of SBDC/ITCs over the past year. As one of 11 SBDC International Trade Centers they will help Illinois small businesses identify and pursue exporting opportunities to grow their business and increase their competitiveness in the global economy. A few of the services provided include assessing a company’s readiness to export, identification of potential markets and foreign buyers, assistance with export finance options, guidance on export documentation requirements and information on logistics.
“We view the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center as being among the best innovation resources and development assets in this region. The new vision for the CEC integrates perfectly with the Illinois SBDC,” stated Kevin Willer, President of the CEC.
The Illinois SBDC at Chicagoland Chamber will be led by John Roberson, who has been promoted to the role of Executive Director.
“John’s recent experience as Executive Vice President of the CEC will enable start-ups, Chamber Members and emerging companies to connect with experienced firms, as well as create relationships, to engage and grow their companies,” stated Jerry Roper, President and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.
“I see my role as Executive Director of the Illinois Small Business Development Center to identify the best and brightest small businesses in our region and connect them to the resources they need to grow,” said John Roberson.
The Illinois SBDC network is funded through a federal-state partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and DCEO and administered by DCEO’s Office of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology.
Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed June 26 – July 2 Illinois Small Business Week in recognition of the 367,660 small businesses in Illinois. These businesses are the backbone of the Illinois economy, employing 3.8 million people.
More information about the Illinois SBDC network is online at www.ilsbdc.biz. Information about the Illinois SBDC at the Chicagoland Chamber is at www.chicagolandchamber.org.

May again. Is that Quinn proclamation just coincidence or was TechWeek intentionally tied to it?
* Speaking of Tech Week, I spent some time talking to Phil Tadros at the storefront for Next Door at 659 W. Diversey on Tuesday which is why I did not see my emails until about 1am. I ran a few errands, came home, took a long nap and woke up about 12:15am.
Phil had to leave before 3pm for a meeting with all the folks from Tech Week. I don’t know if it was supposed to be just Geoff and Jon or the whole crew.
We talked about areas for improvement next year and one thing Phil mentioned and I have heard others say is that the space on the 7th floor of the Mart did not flow well. The issue is that there was no central meeting area where everyone gathered and there were no more than three or four hundred people at any given time so such a central meeting place should not have been so hard to pull off.
Phil and I also talked about how the thing was organized as though it was 1911, not 2011.
Specifically, he mentioned that when you came in, you had to fill out a piece of paper and show papers to get in and folks like Matt McCall and Phil were standing in line for some time. I told him that I did not have to wait and he said, quite seriously, “You’re Ron May.”
Yeah Phil, like my “celebrity” status gets me into Len Bland’s and Dave Carman’s events! Or David Miller’s! Or Terry Howerton’s and Fred Hoch’s! Or TiE-Midwest! Look what it did for me with Maura O’Hara. Mark Glennon would let me in for free and Maura charged me more than everyone else — $600 if I recall correctly, which was $100 more than others paid because I paid at the door and also Brad Spirrisoon was let in as a reporter for free, but look at who is still clicking away now. And now that I outted him for being a rent deadbeat, how easy will it be for me to get into any events Mike Rhodes hosts?
That is about all the suggestions for improvement that we had time to discuss. I will ask Phil how the meeting went.
* One thing about Phil. Let there be no doubt about it, he is slated for execution in this report but he does not seem to mind. And he does have what appear to me to be open and candid discussions with me. He does not cower or flee the questioning or interrogation — as a result we gain greater insight into business and the way it works which is after all, the goal of this report.
I’ll give you a good example involving a Lightbank firm next time. It is a firm called Body Shop Bids funded by Lightbank, I think earlier this year. bodyshopbids.com/about
I had heard that Brad, the founder, was not happy with Phil and I asked Phil about it. I’ll give you much more detail on what he had to say next time, but he did not shy away from the question.
And Phil does acknowledge — or argue — that no one bats 1000. He admits that there are some failed projects or unhappy customers among the 300 or more his firm has done in the last few years, but he argues and contends that many more are happy, and he includes in that list Brad Keywell, New World Ventures, Howard Tullman and Flash Point Academy, and many more. His web development/video firm is www.doejo.com
I’ll give you a full report on Next Door, its history and evolution and the interviews I conducted there Tuesday afternoon. I was in my T-shirt and regular shorts, not under shorts, but I figured that it was better to go to Next Door on Diversey than to Cyber Security downtown where they would look at me weird.
Two more things about Phil.
1. He is moving into new space further north on Broadway to go along with the storefront he has now. The new office will not be on the street level and will be 6,000 square feet. Phil said he needs or wants 10,000 square feet total and he has 40 people at this point.
2. I believe the date is September 9th, Doejo is planning a party in the new space even though it won’t be fully ready. David Dalka will not be allowed in if I have anything to say about it.
BTW, amended S-! was not filed as of Monday night. Has it been filed by now. It is 4:29am Wednesday morning.

Possibly good news for Advanced Diamond Technologies, and not-so-good news for Neil Kane, but ADT appoints John D. Yerger, III to position of president and CEO
Subject: Advanced Diamond Technologies Names John D. Yerger, III President and Chief Executive Officer
Date: 8/9/2011 8:30:18 A.M. Central Daylight Time
From: jill@calyxconsulting.com
To: ronaldmay@aol.com
Yerger to implement worldwide growth strategies to realize the potential of Advanced Diamond Technologies’ diamond enabled products.
Romeoville, IL—August 9, 2011— Advanced Diamond Technologies (ADT), the world leader in developing diamond films for industrial, electronic, and water treatment applications today announces that John D. Yerger, III has been named president and chief executive officer (CEO). Yerger brings more than 25 years of management experience in running global businesses to ADT as well as significant experience in market creation, high technology manufacturing, and successfully developing and taking products to market.
“Yerger is exactly the intelligent, high energy, intense leader who thrives on building new things and implementing the structure, process, and rigor necessary for success,” said ADT’s Chairman Bob Geras. “He certainly qualifies as an inspirational leader and has proven himself quite capable of being a hands-on leader within a growth stage company. His knowledge of operations enhancement, customer relations, and vision are an ideal fit for ADT.”
ADT enables a wide range of products with UNCD®, a patented thin-film form of nanocrystalline diamond that harnesses the unsurpassed properties of diamond, to exponentially enhance performance with little added cost. This announcement comes on the heels of ADT closing its $5.2 million Series D financing. The investment will be used for sales, marketing, and business development to realize diamond’s potential in the areas of industrial coatings, semiconductors, and water treatment—each with a potential market in the billions of dollars.
“I am joining ADT at a key time in the company’s history, especially considering its rapid growth and strong leadership position in the marketplace,” said Yerger. “ADT is an internationally recognized manufacturer of award-winning products enabled by diamond and has positioned itself to deliver game-changing products into markets with high potential revenues and high societal impacts; I’m eager to help ADT reach its fullest potential and take it to the next level.”
Yerger comes to ADT from SMS Technologies (San Diego, CA) and Total Electronics (Logansport, IN), both premier electronics manufacturing contractors specializing in high-end niche applications such as LED lighting, high-tech defense/RF, automotive, and industrial products. As the president and CEO of both firms, Yerger led a financial and operational turnaround through the addition of new customers and implementing lean manufacturing techniques. He achieved a net income increase of $2.5 million per year through strong growth in revenue and cost reduction that doubled the company’s value at the time of its sale in December 2010 to Thailand based Cal-Comp Electronics. Prior to that, Yerger led the design and launch of several award-winning products at DEK in Weymouth, England.
“As ADT’s co-founder, I’m excited to have John come on board as ADT turns the corner and moves into its growth phase,” said Dr. John Carlisle, ADT’s chief technology officer. “His greatest potential contribution to ADT will be his proven ability to take a product concept and turn it into a marketable, profitable product line. His experience in high technology manufacturing, approach to identify and prioritize product opportunities, and knowledge of international markets will produce immediate results and create new opportunities for our breakthrough technology.”
Yerger holds an MBA, MSE, and BSE degrees from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
