* Just cleaning up a few errors and a few clarifications.
1. It is Careerli, not Careerly and the URL is www.careerli.com
2. It is www.Dabblehq.com, not www.dabble.com
3. I was right that the guy on the Fred Hoch panel on scaling, in the second chair from the right, was Godard Abel of Big Machines. I saw him at Sidebar and he confirmed to me that he was the guy who said he could not remember names when his firm got to 100 employees and the other comments I attributed to him.
4. Another URL I got wrong was Bromance. It is www.bromance.me not www.bromance.com. The co-founder Jeff Canty moved here from Atlanta and lives a few blocks north of me in East Lakeview.
5. I still can’t find the name of the founder of Forecast, foreca.st
6. The founders of gTrot are Brittany Laughlin and Zach (what is your last name?). All I know is that he went to Harvard and she went to NYU. Well, I guess that’s enough. Here’s their picture congratulating BabbaCo on their win. blog.gtrot.com/
7. Leslie Beller is starting a business with the goal of getting around the SAT and ACT stranglehold for college admissions, according to Eric Lannert of i.c.stars.
8. The guy from Restaurant.com said that they paid $400K for the URL. Hey, those are Bill Lederer and art.com numbers.

Thought you’d be interested in the most recent SBA longtitudinal study on gender and enterprise ownership. www.sba.gov/advocacy/850/12256 The data shows some drop-off in employment for all enterprises covered, but remember that it does not include businesses founded during the study period. Women own a large proportion of U.S. businesses, with 45 owners for every 1,000 women in the general population. This is about half the proportion for men, but is enough that women-owned businesses employ more people than the Fortune 500.

Hi Ron-

Thanks for the kind mention in your report. I have always been very
impressed with your memory and thank you so much for your compliments of my
past success.

I am happy to mail you some more samples for your scars, it really is great
stuff. The gel is great but needs the silicone sheeting to make it all work
and please remember to only use it on closed wounds.

Heartland Angels files amicus brief with Supreme Court over copyright law

This fall the Supreme Court will hear the case of Golan v Holder, which challenges the constitutionality of the right of Congress to restore to copyright foreign works previously in the public domain, as conferred by the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994.

Kevin Keener leads the intellectual property practice within the boutique small business law firm Keener, McPhail, Salles in Chicago, Illinois. Explains Keener, one of the team members who filed an amicus curiae brief in support of petitioner Heartland Angels, “Congress authorized the removal of works from the public domain when it passed the Uruguay Round Agreements Act. The issue before the Supreme Court is whether Congress has the power to remove works from the public domain.”

This is of great concern to petitioner Heartland Angels, a midwest private equity network that invests in seed and early stage companies. Says the company’s president, Ron Kirschner, “This law makes it very difficult us to know the future value of a company in which we want to invest. How are we to know what expenses and royalty payments a company will have if we don’t know if the once copyrighted works they are using in their operations are in the public domain or not? You just don’t know if a company will be a profitable investment. The risks of investing are made so much greater by this unknowable.” Keener expands on this thought, saying, “The law has a chilling effect on the exercise of free speech enjoyed by those who invest in the arts. We asked the Court to rule that the Uruguay Round Agreements Act is unconstitutional. It will be interesting to see how the Court rules on this issue, as it will impact so many people.”

Heartland Angels’ legal representation in this matter also includes Oregon attorney Stephen Wolfson, and American University College of Law professor Michael W. Carroll, who is director of the school’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property..

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from the parties on October 5, 2011. A decision is expected in 2012.

Chicago Chief Technology Officer John Tolva and Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer of the United States, Kick Off First-Ever Chicago TechWeek

Tolva delivers “State of Chicago’s Technology and Innovation” Address;

invites Chicago’s innovation and technology leaders to help make government more efficient

Today, the City of Chicago’s Chief Technology Officer John Tolva opened Chicago’s first-ever TechWeek by delivering a “State of Chicago’s Technology and Innovation” Address, and welcoming Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer of the United States. TechWeek is a week-long festival and conference for innovators and tech leaders, being held at Merchandise Mart and venues across Chicago through Friday, July 29.

“Chicago has always been an innovation leader in the world; today, technology is the key driver of this innovation,” Tolva said. “Chicago is using technological advances to provide essential services and information to residents for a lower cost, solicit public feedback on key projects, grow and expand the city’s workforce, and advance Chicago as a leader in the world economy.”

TechWeek showcases Chicago’s thriving technology scene. The Chicago-area houses 275,000 high-tech jobs spread among 24,000 employers, with more than 50 publicly traded high-tech companies and a vibrant tech start-up community. This leadership extends to the city’s government as well.

The City of Chicago is publishing new city datasets on the web on a weekly basis, and refreshing these sets nightly, to allow Chicagoans to monitor the vital signs of the city. The City is also crowdsourcing ideas for increasing efficiency, as well as opening opportunities for residents to use the City’s data and information to make application and build new websites.

In June, the City launched Apps for Metro Chicago Illinois (www.appsformetrochicago.org), a first-of-its-kind competition encouraging developers to build useful and creative applications for residents and visitors to the Chicago area. On July 16, Google Chicago hosted a Chicago Open Data Hack Day, bringing together 60 engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs to share ideas for using City of Chicago open data as raw material for new products and services.

To help the public monitor and evaluate city services, the City of Chicago’s technology office has launched performance dashboards featuring 21 datasets on city services like pothole repair, licensing and permitting, and 311 calls. These datasets are available online at cityofchicago.org/performance. Since May 16, 2011, the City of Chicago’s open Data Portal, data.cityofchicago.org, has logged more than 270,000 views and has added new dataset visualizations.

The City has also broken new ground in using social media to engage Chicago residents. On June 30, Mayor Emanuel participated in a live Facebook Town Hall, answering questions submitted and ranked by the public via Facebook and Twitter. Hundreds of Chicagoans participated in the event, which fostered direct communication between residents, regardless of geographic location or economic background.

Tolva said his vision for the city’s technological future is to use open data, information, and technology in concert with one another to drive conversation and advancement. “Technology allows us to communicate with everyone and to hear ideas from all corners of the city,” he said. “We will use this information and these ideas to help drive the city forward.”

Bonuses for Billionaires
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: July 20, 2011

The first few times I heard House Republicans talk about our budget mess, I worried that they had plunged off the deep end. But as I kept on listening, a buzzer went off in my mind, and I came to understand how much sense the Tea Party caucus makes.

Why would we impose “job-crushing taxes” on wealthy Americans just to pay for luxuries like federal prisons? Why end the “carried interest” tax loophole for financiers, just to pay for unemployment benefits — especially when those same selfless tycoons are buying yachts and thus creating jobs for all the rest of us?

Hmmm. The truth is that House Republicans don’t actually go far enough. They should follow the logic of their more visionary members with steps like these:

BONUSES FOR BILLIONAIRES Republicans won’t extend unemployment benefits, even in the worst downturn in 70 years, because that makes people lazy about finding jobs. They’re right: We should be creating incentives for Americans to rise up the food chain by sending hefty checks to every new billionaire. This could be paid for with a tax surcharge on regular working folks. It’s the least we can do.

Likewise, the government should take sterner measures against the persistent jobless. Don’t just let their unemployment benefits expire. Take their homes!

Oh, never mind! Silly me! The banks are already doing that.

LET JOBS TRICKLE DOWN Leftist pundits say that House Republicans don’t have a jobs plan. That’s unfair! Granted, the Republican-sponsored Cut, Cap and Balance Act would eliminate 700,000 jobs in just its first year, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, but those analysts are no doubt liberals. America’s richest 400 people own more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans, and the affluent would feel renewed confidence if the Republican plan passed. We’d see a hiring bonanza. Each of those wealthy people might hire an extra pool attendant. That’s 400 jobs right there!

Cut, Cap and Balance would go even further than the Ryan budget plan in starving the beast of government. Sure, that’ll mean cuts in Social Security, Medicare and other programs, but so what? Who needs food safety? How do we know we really need air traffic control unless we try a day without it?

ROOT OUT SOCIALISM Republicans have been working to end Medicare as we know it but need to examine other reckless entitlements, such as our socialized education system, in which public schools fritter resources on classes like economics and foreign languages. As a former Texas governor, Miriam “Ma” Ferguson, is said to have declared when she opposed the teaching of foreign languages: “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for us.”

For that matter, who needs socialized police and fire services? We could slash job-crushing taxes at the local level and simply let the free market take over:

“9-1-1, may I help you?” “Yes, help! My house is burning down!” “Very good, sir. I can offer you one fire engine for $5,995, or two for just $10,000.” “Help! My family’s inside. Send three fire engines! Just hurry!” “Yes, sir. Let me just run your credit card first. And if you require the fire trucks immediately, there’s a 50 percent ‘rush’ surcharge.”

CHILL OUT ABOUT THE DEBT CEILING House Republicans like Michele Bachmann are right: If the debt ceiling isn’t raised, some solution will turn up. As Representative Austin Scott, a Republican from Georgia, observes: “In the end, the sun is going to come up tomorrow.”

We got through the Great Depression, didn’t we? It looked pretty hopeless in 1929, but in just a dozen years World War II bailed us out with an economic stimulus. Something like that’ll come along for us, too. Ya gotta have faith.

CONSIDER ASSET SALES While Democrats are harrumphing about “default,” Republicans have sagely noted that there are alternatives in front of our noses. For example, why raise taxes on hard-pressed managers of hedge funds when the government can sell assets?

Fort Knox alone has 4,600 tons of gold, which I figure is worth around $235 billion. That’s enough to pay our military budget for four months! And selling Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon would buy us time as well.

RENT OUT CONGRESS If the debt ceiling isn’t raised, we could also auction members of Congress for day jobs: Are you a financier who wants someone to flip burgers (steaks?) at your child’s birthday party? Why, here’s Eric Cantor! Many members of Congress already work on behalf of tycoons, and this way the revenue would flow to the Treasury.

Finally, if we risk default, let’s rent out the Capitol for weddings to raise money for the public good. Wouldn’t it be nice to see something positive emerge from the House?
