[Editor's note: May here. One spelling correction: It is Profita, not Proffita as I wrote a couple of days ago in the headline. I don't know what Gruber is really up to, but he is providing good info. on Chicago high tech. BTW, the guys from Where I've Been were not on the TechWeek 100 list and they probably should have been.

We could have done without Maura O'Hara whose last major event was three or four years ago. Sorry Ellen Carnahan, the same for you and I suspect Ellen would agree with that since she ceased raising money for a fund several years ago. Churchwell was correctly overlooked for the same reason, but they could have thrown in Dennis Serio as a nod to tech commercialization, universities and the angel networks. Where was Kirschner or Geras who are still actually investing? David Miller of iBIO should have been on the list since he had a lot to do with the angel investor laws passed in Illinois.

No offense to these people, but folks like Ron May, Dan Lyne, Matt Moog, Chuck Templeton and Mark Achler are really fossil relics from the past and while they're still around, they're not exactly setting the world on fire these days. (Matt Moog, I hear that your sales and your work habits are flat these days, but that does come indirectly from a competitor.) Heck, if Chuck Templeton and Mark Achler are on the list, why not Alex Zoghlin, Dan Malven, Alan Warms, or god forbid, Jerry Mitchell? Sorry Alex, Dan and Alan, lumping you in with Jerry was uncalled for.

A case could be made for someone like Linda Darragh since Braintree just got megabucks and a few firms that came through the New Venture Challenge at ChicagoBooth like ReTel and Bump Technologies have done well so far. There is not one nanotech firm and only one new energy firm (Invenergy) from what I saw in my cursory run through. I think there is only one biotech start-up, kCura. Both Matt Maloney and Mike Evans from GrubHub could have been consolidated to just one of them with a mention of the other one in the write-up which is how they handled Fred and Terry (Fred got the nod and Terry got the honorable mention but not the pick which I'm not complaining about, mind you.). Ed Scanlan of Total Attorneys is another pick that was more for sentimental value than real value-add. I think the same could be said about Adrian Holovaty at this point. Along those lines, if Adrian qualifies, why not Kris Hammond or Brad Flora? And if we are picking tech hotshots which is really what Adrian is, why not Uki Lucas? To be continued. Happy 7th birthday to my niece Bianca May.]

TripAdvisor Acquires Where I’ve Been
Monday, July 11, 2011 7:12 PMFrank Gruber

Boston-based TripAdvisor has become a go-to resource for planning trips as they have amassed thousands of user reviews about hotels and other sights to see in a given location (whether they are all genuine or not is up for debate). Today the travel site announced they acquired Chicago-based startup Where I’ve Been. Where I’ve Been grew like a weed by creating one of the first Facebook applications that allowed users to share their travels on a world map. 10 million people have created color-coded travel maps to mark off traveling to half a billion places. That’s a lot of maps.
Where I’ve Been was founded by Michael Dalesandro and Craig Ulliott, who called Where I’ve Been his “best mistake” in a previous interview. In 2008 the company raised $1 million in angel funding and then took another $750K from Lightbank (the team behind Groupon).
According to a report on All Things D:
“At its peak, it had 116,328 daily active users and nearly 1.6 million monthly active users, according to AppData. Its traffic has since fallen to 3,000 daily users and 70,000 monthly users.”
The entire product team at Where I’ve Been will join TripAdvisor. Terms of the acquisition will not be disclosed.

Google Shares Jump 10% After Blowout Earnings Report

Google smashed expectations with its latest quarterly report, eclipsing concerns about mounting expenses and sending the Internet giant’s stock up more than 10 percent.

——————————————————————————–

The search engine and advertising company [GOOG 528.94 -9.32 (-1.73%) ] said its earnings excluding items shot up to $8.74 a share from $6.45 a year earlier.

Net revenue, which excludes fees paid to partner websites, jumped 36 percent to $6.92 billion.

Analysts expected Google to earn $7.85 a share on revenue of $6.55 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Analysts said the company benefited from growth in several of its businesses including mobile and online video.

“Google should be viewed as a growth company again this quarter,” said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan. “The combination of mobile search, Android, ad exchange, YouTube, and the core search businesses, they’re all doing well. Google is no longer a one-trick pony.”

“The number to focus on is really the GAAP earnings number. Google spent aggressively, hiring just as many people this quarter as they did last quarter.”

Net income increased 36 percent to $2.51 million, or $7.68 a share.

Investors had feared Google’s ever-increasing spending would eat into margins. Operating expenses leapt 49 percent to $2.97 billion in the second quarter, to about a third of revenue.

But analysts said the big increase in sales more than compensated for the rise in costs.

“Revenue growth overrides the hiring and the expense issues,” BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis said in response to the share price jump.

“Nice quarter from the guys, but you still have a situation of declining margins.”

Chief Executive Larry Page is expected to face analysts’ questions on a conference call on Thursday regarding not just its spending and margins, but also newly released social networking service Google+, an effort to take on Facebook and Twitter, which are siphoning off websurfers’ time and attention.

Before the earnings, some analysts had argued that the launch of Google+, its biggest foray so far into the hot field of social networking, may take some of the heat off the company for its spending and make Wall Street more comfortable with co-founder Page, who took the CEO reins in April.

Investors are hungry also for details about an investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission into Google’s business practices, as well as any commentary about how the European debt crisis is affecting its advertising business.

Google shares have a had a rocky week after a downgrade by Morgan Stanley, which cut its price target on the stock to $600 from $645. The stock also fell during regular trading Thursday, down more than 2 percent, but rebounded more than 10 percent in after-hours trading after the report. Groupon Inc. is changing its privacy policies to allow it to collect more information as it offers more deals targeted to users based on their locations.

The Chicago deal site announced the changes in an email to its 83 million subscribers Sunday, saying that the new policies are part of an effort to provide greater transparency about the way it handles private information about users. The announcements come as the company seeks to go public and on the heels of its launch of Groupon Now, a mobile service that provides instant deals based on a user’s location.

Groupon Privacy Changes Reveal More About You
By Jared Newman, PCWorld Jul 11, 2011 8:17 AM

Groupon’s made some changes to its privacy policy that give the company broader latitude with users’ personal information.

One major change allows Groupon to collect location data through the daily deal service’s mobile apps. Groupon may use this data to present marketing deals to users.

Location tracking is a touchy subject, given the recent brouhaha over how Apple and Google treat location data, but this particular use makes sense. If you’re in Los Angeles, you wouldn’t want to see daily deals from New York.

More concerning, perhaps, is the expansion of personal information to include interests and habits. Again, this seems logical considering the service Groupon provides. If you eat a lot of steak, Groupon should show you more deals for steakhouses.

But this broader definition gets a bit creepy when you consider who else besides Groupon has access to this information. As VentureBeat’s Meghan Kelly points out, Groupon doesn’t control what partners and merchants do with personal data:

“We encourage Groupon Merchants and business partners to adopt and post privacy policies,” Groupon’s policy reads. “However, the use of your Personal Information by such parties is governed by the privacy policies of such parties and is not subject to our control.”

It’s worth noting that bigger companies are participating in Groupon as well, all governed by their own privacy policies. Groupon’s new policy says it shares personal data with these partners.

Expedia, for instance, has partnered with Groupon for travel deals, and Expedia’s own privacy policy lets the company share your personal information with third-party vendors, business partners, referring Websites, and sister sites such as Hotwire. Groupon users are subject to these policies just by signing up for Groupon’s Getaway Deal offers.

At least Groupon’s being up front about it, notifying users of the new policy by e-mail and attempting to explain the changes in plain English. Do you really expect any Internet company to update its privacy policy to give itself less control over user data?

Ron May here. One good thing to come from Len Bland: As a result of my checking on his failure to raise money for his clients, and his insistence on being paid to do whatever it is that he does no matter what the results, I have found out some good info. We now know the name of the drug Dr. Yaser Maksoud is using for Alzheimer’s therapy. Here are my notes from my conversation with Dr. Yaser Maksoud late yesterday afternoon:
++++++++++++++++++++++
312-731-4949

Dr. Yaser Maksoud
Bland is paid as a biz advisor
His company (Nerve Access) paid $15K for membership and a trip to BIO
Yaser took Len to BIO with him and Len helped in talking to people
Yaser met Len in November
Yaser is not paying Len monthly. It is more complicated than that.
Yaser pays for projects and will pay commission if money is ever raised through Len
Yaser would not say the amount he pays, it is far less than $5K a month
Yaser: “I would not be happy with Len’s results if I were paying $5K a month.”
Yaser would not say the amt he pays Len, but he did say it is a small amt
Filed for patent in June
The drug is intranasal insulin which forms the basis for the therapy for Alzheimer’s
Nothing came from Yaser’s presentation to the BNC Venture Capital Group meeting, but he did meet with Joel Berez a month or so later and he has yet to hear back

INDIANAPOLIS – GuideSoft, Inc. d/b/a Knowledge Services, an information technology consulting firm, announced today that it will expand its operations here, creating up to 200 new jobs by 2015

July 14, 2011

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS – GuideSoft, Inc. d/b/a Knowledge Services, an information technology consulting firm, announced today that it will expand its operations here, creating up to 200 new jobs by 2015.

The company, which provides consulting and placement services, Software as a Service (SaaS) applications and IT training for customers in industries including health care, technology, manufacturing and entertainment, among others, will invest more than $1.9 million to lease and equip additional office space at the company’s corporate headquarters and service center on the city’s northeast side.

“Indiana’s IT economy continues to grow and provide high-wage opportunities for Hoosiers across the state,” said Governor Mitch Daniels. “Indiana’s talented high-tech workforce and positive business climate will be an asset as Knowledge Services expands their corporate headquarters. They made the right decision by continuing to invest in Indiana.”

Knowledge Services, which currently employs more than 150 associates in Indianapolis, has already begun hiring additional software developers, accounting, customer support, training and business development staff.

“We are pleased to be expanding in Indianapolis,” said Julie Bielawski, chief executive officer of Knowledge Services. “Based on our compelling and complimentary blend of services, we have been very fortunate to experience continued strong revenue growth. With our key practice areas realizing significant growth, we are forecasting similar increases moving forward. Short and long term business costs including the state’s competitive business climate and availability of skilled labor all contributed to our decision to remain in Indiana.”

Founded in 1994, Knowledge Services operates in more than 30 states, employing more than 600 associates. The certified Women’s Business Enterprise serves clients including Oracle Corporation, Mattel, Hill-Rom, WellPoint, Disney and Verizon, among others.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Knowledge Services up to $2.7 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $25,000 in training grants based on the company’s job-creation plans. The city of Indianapolis will consider additional property tax abatement at the request of Develop Indy.

“Knowledge Services continued investment in Indianapolis is another boost to our growing IT industry,” said Mayor Greg Ballard. “The jobs this company provides are exactly the types of quality jobs we are focused on bringing to Indianapolis.”

Knowledge Services’ announcement comes on the heels of three companies announcing last month expansions in Indianapolis. St. Regis USA recently announced the creation of 41 new jobs by 2014 and its plans to invest $4.18 million in a northeast side Indianapolis facility and Arrow Container announced the creation of 65 jobs and a $3.49 million capital investment at its Indianapolis headquarters. At the beginning of June, StreetLinks Lender Solutions also announced plans to create 150 new jobs by 2013 through an expansion of its Central Indiana operations.

About Knowledge Services Knowledge Services established in 1994 and headquartered in Indianapolis Ind., is a certified woman-owned (WBE) professional services organization with over 600 employees located in offices throughout North America. Hello again, Ronald:

I hope all is well. I wanted to touch base with you in advance of the upcoming TechWeek Conference & Expo at the Mart, July 22-29, 2011.

The conference is the brainchild of Chicagoans Goeff Domarcki and Jonathan Pelsky, who are pushing to drive awareness for Chicago as a new, emerging technology hub. It features four days of conference sessions and well over 150 speakers, including U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra, Co-Founder and COO of GrubHub Mike Evans, head engineer of Google Brian Fitzpatrick and Co-Founder of Jory Des Jardins, among others.

As we lead up to the event, I’m hoping to coordinate a call for you with Jon and Geoff. They can provide some background on the event and why individuals interested in technology should have an eye on Chicago (both returned to the Windy City following stints in Silicon Valley). How’s your schedule shaping up?

If a call with the founders isn’t of interest, I’d be more than happy to arrange for media credentials on your behalf. I look forward to your feedback, and feel free to reach out if you need any additional information.

Thanks in advance!

Abby

Ron,
This morning I have my meeting with the folks at the European Commission in Brussels. The trip so far has surpassed my expectations, so spirits are high. I can give you a full report sometime over the weekend but I’m flying all day Friday. If there is time later this evening, I might be able to call you via Skype. What is your Skype name? Or what is your cell number? I won’t have much time but I DO want to be responsive because you reached out as a journalist.
Cheers!
Rick

Governor Quinn Signs Legislation to Advance Clean Energy Project, Create 1,500 Jobs

Leucadia Project Will Boost Regional Economy; Provide Long-Term Price Certainty to Consumers

CHICAGO – July 13, 2011 www.twitter.com/techaccesstv – Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation that will help create Illinois’ first coal gasification plant and substantially reduce carbon emissions, while creating 1,500 jobs and saving consumers more than $100 million over the next several years. The new law follows principles the Governor outlined in the spring legislative session requiring all energy projects to protect consumers, create jobs and safeguard our environment.

“Projects that create jobs and protect consumers strengthen our continued economic recovery,” said Governor Quinn. “This project protects Illinois consumers, while continuing our position as a leader in clean energy technology by utilizing home grown resources to create the jobs of today and tomorrow.”

The Chicago Clean Energy project is a $3 billion coal gasification project that will be located on a brownfield site within the Chicago-Calumet Industrial Corridor at 115th Street and Burley Avenue, formerly the LTV Steel plant, on Chicago’s southeast side.

The project will utilize, for the first time in Illinois, an advanced clean coal process known as gasification. The chemical process allows production of substitute natural gas from Illinois coal and petroleum coke without burning the coal or petroleum coke. Carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions are captured as part of the process and then eventually sequestered underground. Experts view the process as a lynchpin to development of new coal facilities with sharply reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Chicago Clean Energy expects to generate more than $10 billion in economic output for Illinois and create tens of thousands of jobs, including approximately 1,100 construction jobs, 200 permanent jobs and 165 additional mining jobs.

The plant will use at least one million tons of Illinois coal per year.

“We are grateful to Governor Quinn for his foresight in seizing an opportunity to make Illinois a leader in clean energy technology, and in securing clean energy jobs for the state,” said Tom Mara, executive vice president of Leucadia National Corporation, the company behind the Chicago Clean Energy project. “We are committed to working closely with local leaders and community members to make this project a tangible benefit to Chicago and the entire state of Illinois.”

The final legislation was revised from a previous measure considered earlier this year to include input from the Governor, the Environmental Law and Policy Center, the Citizens Utility Board, local organizations near the project site and other stakeholders. The bill now proportionally allocates the natural gas produced at the facility to Illinois’ gas utilities. It also includes a number of consumer protections, including a rate cap, a robust reserve account that fairly aligns the interests of the developer with those of the consumer, and a revised system to share savings and potential revenues with consumers.

Dear Editor,
Please consider for publication.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IFS to develop and deploy enterprise Smartphone apps using Windows Azure
Itasca, Ill., July 13, 2011 – IFS, the global enterprise applications company announced today its intent to develop and deploy additional IFS Touch Apps, a series of smartphone apps that extend the capabilities of IFS Applications, using the Windows Azure platform.
IFS Touch Apps is a set of apps to allow users of the IFS Applications software suite to access this ERP and other functionality through smartphones. IFS Touch Apps targets the mobile individual who works on the move, using a smartphone to perform quick tasks.
IFS Touch Apps can also speed up business processes as there will be less time waiting for mobile individuals to perform their step in the process – for example approving purchases or authorizing expenses.
Microsoft Corp. technology will be running behind IFS Touch Apps because the apps will connect to the IFS Cloud—a set of services running inside the Windows Azure cloud environment, where they serve as the backbone of the smartphone apps. IFS customers will be able to “uplink” their IFS Applications installations to IFS Cloud and benefit from the new IFS Touch Apps. This model of deployment via the Windows Azure Platform enables automatic updates of the apps and cloud services, reduces the overhead of providing apps for multiple smartphone platforms, and disconnects the apps from dependencies on specific versions of IFS Applications. In practice this greatly reduces the effort needed by companies to adopt enterprise apps and keep up-to-date with the fast moving world of smartphones.
IFS also announced its intent to offer IFS Touch Apps for the Windows Phone 7. As a result, IFS customers will be able to choose to run the first IFS Touch Apps on Windows Phone 7, iPhone or Android.
“IFS Touch Apps and IFS Cloud are a great example of how IFS is moving in the direction of software plus services in a more advanced way,” IFS Chief Technology Officer Dan Matthews said. “In addition to the core platform of Windows Azure, IFS will become one of the first enterprise software vendors to make use of Microsoft SQL Azure, a new data storage part of the Azure cloud environment. SQL Azure will be used to as the backbone for the IFS Cloud customer portal, where customers can view statistics and manage their usage of IFS Touch Apps.”
The first IFS Touch Apps will be rolled out to early adopter users later this year. IFS has held customer focus groups to gather input on the initial apps and to determine which apps should receive the highest priority and meet the most pressing needs of customers.
“Focus groups and early adopter programs are a key way for IFS to keep the development process close to customers,” Matthews said. “Our goal is to address our customers’ most pressing needs rather than to offer a broad spectrum of apps that customers may purchase, only to find that the app is not helpful to them or does not deliver the benefit they anticipated.”
“We are excited IFS has chosen the Windows Azure platform for the development of the IFS Touch Apps, since they are making advances in apps for the mobile workforce and use of cloud computing. We are also pleased to be able to support their initiative and to have them as one of our Global Independent Software Vendor partners,” said Kim Akers, general manager for global ISV partners at Microsoft.

Communicating with investors at Orbitz

WHO: RUSS HAMMER

Job: Chief financial officer, Orbitz Worldwide Inc., since Jan. 1.

Vitals: 55 years old; bachelor’s in finance, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1978; MBA, DePaul University, Chicago, 1982; various roles including analyst and chief financial officer, U.S. and overseas, Motorola Inc., 1978-2001; chief financial officer, Crocs Inc., Boulder, Colo., 2008-11.

Strong suit: Veteran CFO who helped build management teams at Crocs and Motorola, where he ran the corporate audit department and its leadership development program.

Résumé gap: Hasn’t worked in the travel industry before.

Track record: Helped turn around pop shoemaker Crocs, whose stock soared to $17 a share from 79 cents.

Job one: “We want to build Orbitz into one of the top three hotel-distribution platforms,” Mr. Hammer says. “We have to make sure the finance organization partners closely with the business to make sure we make factual decisions.”

Obstacle: “The stock is completely out of favor at this point,” says Frederick Moran, a Del Rey Beach, Fla.-based analyst at Benchmark Co. LLC. “If Russ wants to see his stock price appreciate and get more recognition from Wall Street, cash flow and earnings will need to become a focus again.”

The plan: “We need to communicate with investors,” Mr. Hammer says. “They need consistency and accuracy. The Street knows me for being very upfront and honest with them.”
