[Editor's note: May here. I spent a lot of time in the sun on Sunday at the pride parade and took some notes. Some local firms with floats included www.gayorbitz.com , Sears Holdings, Marsh McClennan, KPMG, Northrop Grumman, and a variety of B2C firms such as ComEd, Doritos, domu.com, etc. I noticed that the parade, while well attended, was more tame than in years past and it is by no means just for Chicago or for gays. People come from all over and I saw a number of Iowa t-shirts since same sex marriage is legal there. I witnessed a guy on the ground, head bleeding at Broadway and Wellington and a guy getting arrested after a half hour of deliberation and discussion with the cops for grabbing a woman. That was at Broadway and Barry, east side of street.
I was in my wheelchair and about ten people helped push my chair some distance over the afternoon. Now, you just can't make this up. A guy and a girl passed by and asked me if I wanted some Cajun fries. I said "No but I could use a push." The woman said "I'm sorry, I don't have one, I shaved it off." Man, one of the great things about living in the city. One snarky guy told me that I should have told her that I wanted to see the forest without the trees. E-gads! Now this is sounding like the Chris Brogan roast. Debauchery reigns. More later. I may head down to Lundin's event in about a half hour.
BTW, A study by PC Magazine just released on the speed of 4G networks in various cities shows the fastest network here is Verizon, followed by T-Mobile, Sprint, and pulling up the rear is AT&T. The best location in Chicago is near UIC.]

Subject: Advanced Diamond Technologies Wins Third Prestigious R&D 100 Award
Date: 6/29/2011 10:05:24 A.M. Central Daylight Time
From: jill@calyxconsulting.com
To: ronaldmay@aol.com
Romeoville, IL -June 29, 2011- Advanced Diamond Technologies (ADT), the world leader in developing diamond films for industrial, electronic, and medical product applications, wins the prestigious R&D 100 Award for a third time. ADT’s latest award is for its Integrated RF MEMS Switch/CMOS Device. Receiving this mark of excellence deems the Integrated RF MEMS Switch/CMOS Device as one of the, “most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year,” by R&D Magazine.
“We’ve won R&D 100 Awards in three of the four years we’ve been shipping commercial products,” said Dr. John Carlisle, ADT’s co-founder and chief technical officer. “This is a great testimony to the caliber of our team and it’s an honor to be recognized as an innovative company for our groundbreaking family of products.”
“The R&D 100 Awards honor the latest technology developments that are designed to meet societal, scientific, or business challenges facing us today-and tomorrow,” said Rita Peters, R&D Magazine’s editorial director. Eventually these devices may find their way into phased-array radar and mobile communication applications.
“Historically, RF MEMS AC switches last only a few million switching cycles before failing. ADT’s UNCD® technology greatly improves reliability while retaining the CMOS-compatibility of the overall process flow, exhibiting very low insertion loss, and lasting over ten billion switching cycles without failure,” said Dr. Hongjun Zeng, ADT’s lead scientist on this initiative. “This advancement enables the next generation of cell phone technology with faster data transfer rates while reducing the manufacturing costs through mass-production scaling.”
ADT gratefully acknowledges the support of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and contributions from its co-awardees, including: Orlando Auciello and Anirudha V. Sumant, Argonne National Laboratory; Charles Goldsmith, MEMtronics Corporation; Chris Gudeman and Suresh Sampath, Innovative Micro Technology; and James Swonger, Peregrine Semiconductor Corporation.
About Advanced Diamond Technologies
ADT develops products that are enabled by thin smooth diamond. ADT is a World Economic Forum 2007 Technology Pioneer, a recipient of a 2008 EuroAsia IC Award in the Materials Enabling category from EuroAsia Semiconductor, a 2008 R&D 100 Award winner for UNCD® Seals (mechanical seals for pumps), and a 2009 R&D 100 Award winner for NaDiaProbes® (AFM probes made entirely of diamond). News from Tech Cocktail: LivingSocial Acquires Three International Deal Sites and Expands to the Netherlands
Breaking News: LivingSocial Acquires Three International Deal Sites and Expands to the Netherlands
12:02:11 PMMonika Jansen
Our very own DC-based LivingSocial announced this morning that it has acquired Ensogo, the market-leading deal site in Thailand and the Philippines; DealKeren, an Ensogo company based in Indonesia; and GoNabit, a daily deal pioneer with a presence in four Middle Eastern countries.
LivingSocial also introduced Daily Deals in the Netherlands, bringing their country presence up to 21. The only continent they’re missing: Antarctica. Think penguins are interested in daily deals?
“As with previous acquisitions, LivingSocial has again chosen to align with local companies that possess similar values and ways of doing business,” said Tim O’Shaughnessy, CEO and co-founder, LivingSocial. “We are excited to enter the dynamic Asian market and our presence in the Middle East and the Netherlands further strengthens our strategic global efforts to bring LivingSocial values to members across the globe.”
A little background on these newly acquired companies:
Ensogo is the No. 1 social shopping website in Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia and currently serves more than 800,000 members. Ensogo members have saved more than $25 million USD in the past year; they are backed by Rebate Networks, a leading international VC specializing in the social commerce space.
GoNabit is currently the leading daily deal provider based in United Arab Emirates. They provide mom- and dad-approved offers for children and parents via Dubai Family and travel-specific deals through GoNabit Getaways. GoNabit members are in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Dubai, Beirut, Cairo and Sharjah Ajman; they have saved more than $5 million USD in the past year.
Terms of the deals were not released.

Also from Tech Cocktail: Iceland Crowdsources Its New Constitution
Iceland Crowdsources Its New Constitution
9:15:43 AMTrisha Cruz
Facing financial crisis after the collapse of all three of its major commercial banks, Iceland is in need of a major constitutional overhaul. Taking a truly 21st-century approach, the country is, believe it or not, crowdsourcing the process.
The 25-member council responsible for drafting the new constitution is turning to the Internet to get input from citizens. In April of this year, the council began posting draft clauses of the constitution on both its website and on its Facebook page, inviting the public to leave feedback through the comments on either site. The mind-blowing part? The comments are actually being incorporated into the document.
Iceland is undertaking perhaps the most open and participatory constitutional process in modern history. “The public sees the constitution come into being before their eyes. This is very different from old times where constitution makers sometimes found it better to find themselves a remote spot out of sight, out of touch,” Thorvaldur Gylfason, a member of Iceland’s constitutional council, told the Guardian.
With two-thirds of Icelanders on Facebook and the country’s population among the world’s most computer-literate, the constitutional council is utilizing a breadth of social media outlets to reach out to the constituency. The council is streaming all of its weekly meetings live, and has accounts on Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr.
The online recommendations have spanned topics anywhere from improving the treatment of livestock to making it easier for authorities to seize stolen property. From what I can tell, the revolutionary process seem to be working. The current draft of the Human Rights section not only contains an extensive clause barring discrimination for just about any reason, but also guarantees universal mental and physical healthcare, protection of natural resources, and academic freedom.
The unparalleled transparency of Iceland’s constitutional process has also garnered countless nods of approval from people all over the globe. As three Facebook users on the site stated:
“You are a model for every freedom and democracy defender all over the world. Our hopes rely in you. I wish you the best from Spain.”
“Well done Iceland. Irish politicians sit up and note how things should be done!”
“As an American, I would like to express my profound awe, gratitude, and jealousy toward the awesome transparency and collective national effort that the people and leaders of Iceland are showcasing in this fantastic process.”
The council aims for the draft bill to be ready by the end of July. It may be put to a referendum without any changes imposed by parliament, making the document truly “by the people, for the people.” The bill would include checks and responsibilities for parliament and provisions for separation of powers that are intended to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis. Significant changes in the parliamentary election process have also been suggested.
I, for one, think that Iceland’s actions here are inspiring. Faced with economic strife, the country is going the way of the future and utilizing modern vehicles for communication with its citizens. However, the fact that the discussion is mostly taking place on Facebook shows the need for innovative, well-thought-out platforms to facilitate such crowdsourcing processes – especially when the problems to be solved are on a national level. Perhaps Iceland’s efforts are the first steps towards online platforms specifically designed for large-scale brainstorming, harnessing collective power, and synthesizing ideas into real government action.
If you want to contribute to the constitutional discussion and put in your two cents, you can do so here.

Celebrating Chicago’s Maritime Commerce and HistoryGerald H. Thomas, President, Chicago Maritime Society:
William A. Strauss, Associate Director, Chicago Maritime Festival
Wednesday, June 29, 2011, Noon
The Tower Club, 20 North Wacker Drive – 39th Floor
Chicago, Illinois
Maritime commerce has been integral to the economic development of Chicago. The city was founded because of its unique connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Basin. In the nineteenth-century, Chicago was America’s busiest inland water port, and that legacy continues to shape the city’s present as it will its future. For decades, the Chicago Maritime Society has worked tirelessly to make this history accessible to all Chicagoans with a goal of creating a world class maritime museum.
The Chicago Maritime Society aims to create a world class Maritime Museum in
Chicago. There are number of fine museums such as the Chicago History Museum
that have maritime artifacts, however they have pointed out that the maritime stories of
Chicago are too numerous to take on and do them justice.
At the present time, the Society has created a “site visit” museum in the Helix building at Racine and Jackson. It is open by appointment and offers a way to display some of the artifacts and tell some of the stories that the Society think the public would like and needs to hear. They hope to evolve the current site in a series of steps into a commercial museum, open regular hours and situated on or near the Chicago waterways.
The Chicago Maritime Festival celebrates this vital aspect of our city. In 1673 Joliet became the first person to document “The Chicago Portage”. In 2003, the first Chicago Maritime Festival produced the most diverse maritime program ever staged in Chicago. The festival drew over 1,000 people to its seminars, concert, school programs, and shanty sing. Since then, the annual festival and outreach programs have been attended by more than 30,000. Each year festival goers enjoy over 30 seminars and workshops plus ship models, displays, and demonstrations presented by the individuals and organizations that make up the maritime community in Chicago as well as some presenters from across the sea.
Gerald H. Thomas, Ph.D. President, Chicago Maritime Society and William Strauss, Associate Director, Chicago Maritime Festival will talk about the importance of Maritime commerce to Chicago and their efforts to preserve and celebrate this important aspect of Chicago history. William Strauss, a frequent participant in EDC programs, will describe the Festival.
The luncheon is at noon at the Tower Club, 39th floor, 20 North Wacker Drive, Chicago. The cost of the lunch and program is $40 for EDC members and $65 for non-members. There is no charge for EDC Corporate and Sustaining Members.

Anonymous note about Nancy Sullivan and UIC [no header]
________________________________
*********************PLEASE POST ANONYMOUS. DO NOT REVEAL EMAIL ID ******************************************************
Some reader posted if Avijit Ghosh ( Nancy Sullivan’s boss) was probably demoted. It seems so if one looks at the title of his new job. Another issue that arises is whether he was demoted due to the UIC OTM issues or was it something else. There is another aspect to be considered. Ghosh was on hiring committee of Joe White ( the previous President). That time Ghosh was dean of biz school. When Joe White finally got hired, Ghosh got promoted to VPTED and became Nancy Sullivan’s boss. So when Joe is removed due to the law school admissions scandal, the new president comes in and Ghosh loses his job. So was Ghosh given VPTED job as a kickback by Joe?
It would not be unsurprising if that were the case. So similarly we have Dave Carley on committee that hired Nancy Sullivan and then Nancy comes up with the inventor of the year award and guess who gets it – Dave Carley? Its not just an award but a cash prize too as other readers pointed out. Yes your hard earned tax dollars at work!
How could someone like Nancy who doesn’t have a JD or a PhD or licensing experience or a real MBA get this job when she wasn’t even eligible to be an intern in that office few years ago!
NO, ZERO managerial experience adding to her insecurity, only sales and networking experience. She was obviously threatened by the employees and their knowledge at the UIC OTM and has forced all of the senior employees out. Seems that her years of networking paid off in landing her the high paying job of Director at UIC OTM or was it her experience at Keracure as a fundraiser?
Interestingly, her name still appears on the KeraCure website Nancy Sullivan Senior Director, Strategic Planning & Business Development.
Is she also employed by Keracure while collecting her big salary from the state?
Also is she helping her old buddies like Brenda Russell set up their own firms based on university research. Isn’t it true that for federally funded research, there are certain guidelines based on which the tax=payer interest should come first ? Don’t the guidelines that research funded by tax dollars cannot be used by faculty to enrich themselves unless pin-off is inevitable? Mary Dicig was kicked out of UIC because she prevented such pilferage. Other managers during Mary’s time say that UIC cannot be policing such pilferage. So one can understand a don’t ask don’t tell policy. But I think the people have the right to know if it just stops at Don’t Ask Don’t tell under Nancy’s (mis)management. Or is she actively helping faculty in bypassing the law?
Given the sordid details that you have uncovered so far, nothing can be ruled out.
So from all this, are the readers right to conclude that corruption and kickbacks is a way of life at UI? How else can one explains serious complaints to HR by UIC OTM folks that were suppressed – either because Ghosh was a incompetent person ( and was hence demoted) or because he was complicit. I think the situation is too murky and eventually taxpayers will get justice only after a full inquiry similar to the law school admissions scandal inquiry!

Hostway Launches Registry Services Corporation, Registry Back-End Service for New TLDs
Chicago, IL – June 20, 2011 – Hostway, parent company of RegistryPro, (operators of the .PRO the top-level domain for professionals), announced today the launch of Registry Services Corporation, the retail version of its highly secure registry back-end service.
Registry Services Corporation (RSC) now offers TLD operators the same state-of-the-art systems and infrastructure the company has used to manage the .PRO TLD since 2004. In addition, RSC provides 24/7 live technical support, EPP-compliant servers, DNSSEC, IDN capability and IPv6.
The product was unveiled at the 41st meeting of ICANN in Singapore just ahead of the formal decision on new gTLDs to be announced today.
“RegistryPro maintains one of the most stable environments in the industry,” said Karim Jiwani, CEO of RSC and RegistryPro. “Leading technologies deployed throughout our global data centers have made our back-end one of the most reliable in the industry. With the launch of RSC, current and new TLD operators will benefit from this remarkably robust platform.”
“As a registry operator, RSC knows the launch of a successful TLD depends on seamless integration of state-of-the-art systems and commitment to industry-leading infrastructure,” said Jiwani. “RSC will offer new TLD operators a secure, scalable, and cost-effective solution to the most critical aspects of their operations.”
Superior performance and security are paramount to RSC, which also provides 24×7 network monitoring and biometric / electronic access control. RSC also provides multiple redundancies, global nodes and 99.9+% uptime for WHOIS and EPP.
The company’s flagship website, RSC.PRO, officially launched on June 17, in advance of the 41st ICANN International Meeting in Singapore.
“RegistryPro is committed to supporting the ICANN model of Internet governance,” said Lucas Roh, CEO of Hostway Corporation. “The potential that thousands of new TLDs will enter the domain name system (DNS) in the next few years marks a historic moment in the history of the Internet. RSC will be there with the advanced solutions registry operators needed to manage their space in this new domain name landscape.”
Meeting attendees in Singapore who would like more information about RSC’s advanced registry back-end solution can stop by booth #4 in the Raffles Ballroom Foyer.

QponChicago.com launches for LGBT, allied community
CHICAGO – QponChicago.com is a new website focused on deals by and for the LGBT and allied community of the Chicago region. The project launches this month in marketing partnership with Windy City Times, Chicago’s award-winning LGBT newspaper.
QponChicago.com will feature daily deals on a wide range of products and services, including restaurants, spas, travel, entertainment, health, beauty, pets, and much more.
Suzanne Arnold and Tracy Baim, the founders of QponChicago.com, have a long history of involvement in Chicago’s LGBT community, including through media and sports programs. They both served as leaders of the Gay Games VII board in 2006. Arnold has been a leader in numerous sports leagues, and Baim is co-founder and publisher of Windy City Times.
“We wanted to create a one-stop place to find the best deals for the LGBT Chicago area, and that includes deals from great places all around the city and suburbs, in addition to special travel-related deals in other cities,” said Arnold.
QponChicago.com uses the innovative “QR Code” technology for each coupon, and it allows those purchasing coupons to receive the unique QR code for their coupon purchase through an email alert. They can elect to have the QR code sent instantly to their phone, to save on carrying the printed coupon.
The website also allow businesses to sign up and monitor sales of their coupons, and post new deals. They can void coupons through a QR reader or through the website.
“Our goal is to make this a win-win for businesses and consumers,” said Baim. “We want to drive traffic to LGBT and allied companies, and we want to help consumers by offering a range of LGBT-friendly choices. There is power in the ‘gay dollar,’ and this will complement a company’s existing advertising plans with a no-risk coupon program.”
The QponChicago.com website was developed by Lisa Hernandez and Martie Marro of LoveYourWebsite.com, a community-based business that works extensively with LGBT non-profits and small businesses.

Groupon’s secret
Are misleading online ads the secret to Groupon’s success? And is Google implicated?
A lawsuit alleges that Groupon uses illegal bait-and-switch tactics to hook new customers.
GUARDIAN ILLUSTRATION BY BEN HOPFER
sarah@sfbg.com
A San Francisco-based bus tour operator who relies on the Internet to drum up business has filed a class action suit against Groupon, alleging that the deal-of-the-day website uses false advertising, or bait-and-switch tactics, to gets customers to its site.
San Francisco Comprehensive Tours, LLC, which does business as San Francisco Shuttle Tours and Wine Country Tour Shuttle, originally filed suit March 17 in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California “to stop false and misleading business and advertising acts and practices employed on Google.com by Groupon, Inc.”
In essence, the tour company claims that Groupon is dominating Google searches with offerings for discounted local tours – of, say, Alcatraz – that don’t actually exist.
On April 19, SFCT amended its complaint into a class action suit. The amended suit includes “all persons and entities in the United States who purchased Internet ads with Google for the purpose of advertising local tour company business information and whose tour businesses, including the cost of advertising on Google, have been affected by the false advertisements of Groupon which claim to provide discounted offers for tours but actually provide no such offers.”
Attorneys for Groupon have asked for an extension until June 13 to respond to SFCT’s complaint. Representatives for Groupon told the Guardian they can’t comment on the case.
SFCT’s attorneys claim that Groupon is arguing that this shouldn’t be a class action suit because everyone’s complaint is different.

QUESTEK SUPPORTS MATERIALS GENOME INITIATIVE
Proven Computational Approach to Material Design and Development Yields Rapid Results
EVANSTON, IL, June 26, 2011 – QuesTek Innovations LLC supports the creation of the Materials Genome Initiative announced Friday by President Obama, and the further application of computational methods, tools and fundamental databases to rapidly design, develop and commercialize superior new materials.
QuesTek’s pioneering role in the field of computational materials design has been recognized by the National Research Council of the National Academies, and other leading organizations. QuesTek gratefully acknowledges the past contracts that it has received from many U.S. governmental agencies (such as the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, DARPA, NASA, NSF, and others) to develop and apply its Materials by Design® computational material design technology and its Accelerated Insertion of Materials (AIM) capabilities. This has resulted in four new computationally-designed, high-performance materials now produced and sold by leading U.S.-based specialty steel producers, more than ten other new materials in QuesTek’s design and development pipeline, and numerous material design tools and databases being developed and practically applied.
QuesTek’s record of rapid, efficient material design and development is illustrated for example in ultra-tough, ultra-high-strength Ferrium® M54™ steel, which was successfully produced in a full-scale ingot less than 24 months after the material property and performance design goals were set, and also in corrosion-resistant, ultra-high-strength Ferrium S53® steel, which is in service in aircraft landing gear systems and other applications without toxic cadmium plating (typically required to reduce corrosion on conventionally-used 300M steel). QuesTek designed S53 in part with funding from SERDP, a DoD environmental science and technology program that is executed in partnership with DOE and EPA. SERDP has estimated that QuesTek’s design and development of S53 saved approximately $50 million.
Charlie Kuehmann, President and CEO of QuesTek, commented: “We support the Materials Genome Initiative and efforts to further address end-user-driven needs with rapid integrated computational materials design™ capabilities. This initiative can build upon past successes such as Ferrium® C61™, C64™, M54™ and S53® alloys, now sold to customers worldwide by U.S.-based alloy producers under their licenses from QuesTek.”

Has it been a year already? Around this time last year we had finished the Chicago Reader’s infamous “Best of Chicago” voting system online. Our developers at Doejo were more than up to the task. Let’s face it, paper ballots are so 20th Century.
And who better to dish on the best venues, restaurants and hotspots of the city than Chicago’s largest free weekly newspaper? These guys get more than 800,000 weekly page views!
If you’re not familiar with the annual voter-submitted list, the alternative press leader hired Doejo to create a voting platform to cover 113 subcategories in five major categories: Goods and Services; Food and Drink; Arts and Entertainment; Sports and Recreation; and Civics. This helped readers chose “the best under-appreciated Chicago novel,” find “the best band t-shirt,” or discover the “best place to corner an alderman who’s ducking your calls.”
Our voting system was so successful, the Reader’s parent company Creative Loafing had Doejo revamp its “Best of the Bay” Tampa Bay news weekly as well.

Hi Ron,
As you know I am working with Plug and Play Tech Center in Silicon Valley, the largest and most successful Tech startup incubator in the world.
Plug and Play is considering opening an Incubator / Accelerator in Chicago depending on the level of market interest and need.
Over the last several months I have had conversations with many Chicago entrepreneurs and local early stage investors to evaluate the level of community interest in “Plug and Play Chicago” ( www.PlugandPlayChicago.com).
Now I would like to open the discussion up to a larger audience and ask your readers for feedback and comments.
We have created a quick 10 question survey to gauge the state of the Chicago startup community and the interest level in connecting Midwest startups to Silicon Valley investors and mentors through Plug and Play Chicago.
We would appreciate anyone who in currently involved in a Midwest Tech startup – or who would like to be in the future, to take just a few minutes to complete this short survey.
Please click this link for the survey: www.surveymonkey.com/s/3BC3LQY
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Ron,
1. Shopittome.com focuses on clothing while MyPersonalShopper.com covers all consumer goods.
2. Shopittome.com‘s business model is to collect an affiliate fee on sold goods. MyPersonalShopper.com‘s business model is to be the first deal site that allows merchants to target discounts to consumers based on age, gender, location and interests. For example a pizza shop could do a discount that is only purchased by people who live near the shop and like Italian food.
I believe the emergence of the daily deal industry has shown the world a new type of ad unit, and the big money will go to the company that has the best targeting. Right now MyPersonalShopper.com is the only company in the country pursuing the idea of targeted deals.

Dave,
I am adding this at 1:45pm. The rest was written before I heard from John. John has just now responded, but there are no real answers. Nonetheless, it is communication. I guess fear of the stockade works.
Dave, I sat through not one, not two, but three presentations by John. And he won the category in your FFF event on December 8th. He created a considerable amount of interest in his prospects, if you recall.
I have attempted to contact him more than four or five times now.
It is more than fair, given the attention that John commanded from the tech community, that he at least give us an update. That much is an implied part of the deal, wouldn’t you agree, Dave?
I feel that I am being fair here, Dave. He presented three times, he won his category, and he created a sense of excitement that he was on the verge of deals with big players.
Why won’t he just say what happened?
Just what is the positive reinforcement you have in mind for a guy who won’t communicate?
Ron

Hi Ron,
While I do agree I would love to hear “what’s up with TIP Solutions?”…
Actually, no…I don’t see an implied “deal” and we say that as entrepreneurs, whose company hosts events that help entrepreneurs to find the resources they need to be more successful. While we would love to help them spread the word, we don’t make a required follow-up from them as part of the deal. I know you’re a “news guy”…so you’ve got an obvious bias towards more info, so from your point of view, I can imagine that’s important to you. I am assuming John has made decisions based on what he needs to do right NOW for TIP Solutions and more press might not be in the hopper for a while.
As an entrepreneur, the main point is following your vision, serving your customers and the success of the business and doing what is needed to make it thrive and survive, hopefully more of the thriving than just surviving…
Press is great…if it is positive…but companies can be in the middle of something that they can’t even remotely begin to talk about or may not want to share things that are doing that will be sensitive during a transition period. That’s why they have quiet periods in IPOs and the same thing happens for some newer, smaller companies when working with bigger companies or if they are making new headway and have competitive or publicity concerns. Sometimes LESS is MORE…I know, I know…that’s not your style!
John’s a big boy and will provide updates if & when he feels appropriate and in the method that makes the most sense for his biz…I’m good with that…it’s what I would do…and have done at different stages in various companies.
Have a great one.

Dave,
Just because you wave your arms a lot does not make you right and just because I bellow a lot does not make me right.
We can both be wrong.
I somewhat see your point, but let me add this. If you are going to do what John did, which is present an “urgent” case for partnerships or funding and tell everyone that you have a meeting with Motorola that you have set up and have been working on getting for some time, then don’t leave the attendees of your pitch hanging. John’s pitch was based on a narrow window of opportunity.
The worst offender in doing this was Malachi Leopold who told Len Bland’s group in
February 2010 that there was real urgency in raising $500K for a film with Meg Ryan and Kevin Bacon. Here is what I wrote:
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Malachi informs the attendees at the meeting of the time constraints on this deal. If anyone is interested, he tells them, there is a window of about 48 hours to make a move. Anyone interested can contact him at 773-332-6837 or at malachi@LBRBProductions.com. Malachi tells the attendees that the $500K will require a minimum of a $100K investment.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
We never did get an answer from Malachi. When he returned to present about another “urgent” project, in January of this year, he refused to update us on what happened to the Ryan/Bacon movie claiming some kind of NDA that had not existed when he first presented.
Now Dave, that kind of thing is horse manure, or as Melanie would say, horse crop.
If we allow people to come in and rile up the troops on some trumped up sense of urgency, and then go silent, possible investors are being potentially duped.
I have not written about this, and yes, Dave, you and I do have different roles, but I was contacted recently (within the last month) by a major firm that was considering doing a deal with www.Affluence.org, and I told them the truth: these guys may change their ways in the future, but their past behavior shows a red flag. They asked me not to name them in the report.
The company told me that they will keep and eye on Affluence and meanwhile, based on what I told them and what their own extensive independent investigation showed, they would put the deal on ice for six months or a year.
My point Dave, is that the follow-up and the follow-on to presentations is important. Entrepreneurs should be given latitude but not a pass as you seem to be suggesting.
Educational purposes are great, Dave, but there has to be accountability and transparency as well, especially if urgency and specific representations of a certain variety are part of the deal.
We both have a valid point here, Dave, but the world is not as black and white as you represent it to be.

Tom Bennett claims he’s not a one trick pony
Subject: Re: Where’s the post verdict update? www.nuclearchicago.com/ One trick pony.

From: tomrbennett@yahoo.com

Póg ma thoin.
The only one trick pony in this town is John Chase of the Chicago Tribune.
We have been working on the following Nuclear Chicago report updates:
1). Working on publishing an exclusive story re: R.J. Vanecko / David Koschman investigative story.
2). Finalizing USA v. Blagojevich Nuclear Chicago report re: verdict.
3). Working on Nuclear Chicago report re: update of corruption (lack of accountability) involved with $8M TIF for 247 South State Technology incubator.
4). Working on a report re: organizing a meaningful volunteer effort to help the communities in Eastern Nebraska (i.e., Fort Calhoun and Blair) with flooding related issues as absent a mention in Sunday’s Drudge Report and Monday’s SunTimes – haven’t heard much in Chicago about flooding issues in Nebraska along Missouri River.
Evidently, same flooding has been taking place since early June. With the projected Fall 2011 national supply of corn already being forecasted with major decreases in supply, continued flooding issues in Western Nebraska / Easter Iowa will further impair Fall 2011 corn supply (and possibly other commodities).
In addition, there is a Nuclear Plant in Fort Calhoun (20-minutes north of Omaha) that currently addressing levee issues.
5). From a commodities perspective, we’re already experiencing a major surge in prices of coffee beans throughout the world due to weather issues in South America and North Africa combined with the voracious global demand for coffee.
Aside from coffee being the world’s largest consumed commodity, corn is right-up there. According to Nuclear Chicago sources, our nation’s corn supply is going to be under serious constraints this Fall.
This, in turn, will have an impact upon already substantial inflationary pressures — coffee, gasoline, Coca-Cola products (3% to 4% increase this week) and Walgreen’s private label gummie bears (30% increase in last 6-weeks).
These inflationary pressures have taken place after an over 30% increase in the price of a Whopper, Jr. (without cheese) that took place 4-months ago.
Please keep in mind that a Whopper, Jr. uses the following commodities – beef, grain, pickle, lettuce, onion and tomatoes.
Good-bye Blagojevich side show.
Hello inflation.

Joe asks for 6 months of retraining for ‘Cattle Guards’!
CATTLE GUARDS, THIS IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS THEM WANTING TO CHANGE THE LAW OF PHYSICS!
You will love this one, I haven’t stop laughing yet.
For those of you who have never traveled to the west, or southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area. For some reason the cattle will not step on the “guards,” probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails.
A few months ago, President Obama received and was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado . The Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the “cattle guards” immediately!
Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten President Obama out on the matter, Vice-President Joe Biden, intervened with a request that…before any “cattle” guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining for Arizona border guards. “Times are hard,” said Joe Biden, “It’s only fair to the cattle guards and their families!”
And these two guys are running our country, OMG!

One way capitalism can make health care worse and more expensive
Jun 8th 2011, 13:35 by M.S.
DAVID BROOKS had an op-ed in the New York Times yesterday that proclaimed the near impossibility of restraining costs in health care through centralised government efficiency evaluations, which is being justly ridiculed by people (Jon Chait, Jonathan Cohn, Ezra Klein) who note that every single one of the world’s centralised government-regulated health-care systems is far cheaper than America’s relatively decentralised private-sector one. Mr Brooks has surely had this explained to him a thousand times by now, and his failure to process the fact or incorporate it into his worldview seems to me most likely to reflect an absence of the ideological furniture on which the fact could sit. Mr Brooks doesn’t seem to have an instinctive understanding of how it can be possible for unregulated free-market health-care systems to cost more and deliver inferior care than strongly regulated systems with heavy government involvement, and that’s why, while he occasionally must have to acknowledge the existence of the French health-care system, he can’t seem to retain it.
Here’s one example among a million. The other day I went to the IPO announcement of a company that does some fairly state-of-the-art medical stuff. The company was spun off from a public institute a few years back to exploit this technology, but it’s been unable to establish significant revenue or market share, or to get within shouting distance of breaking even. Meanwhile, competitors with similar technologies have gobbled up most of the market share, and one is already quite profitable. The company said it planned to raise some tens of millions of dollars with the share issue, many times its current annual expenditures and about a third of its overall market cap. And what would it do with this money? It was going to use half of it to finance a marketing drive, targeting key decisionmakers at American health-care providers and health insurers, and doctors.
Why hadn’t this company been able to generate significant revenues? Were its technologies inferior? No, said an independent molecular biologist I talked to. Its product was certainly as good as the competition’s. Moreover, it had actually gone to the trouble of getting its technology approved by the FDA, which the competition hadn’t. (In this sub-sector FDA approval isn’t yet mandatory.) But it hadn’t marketed itself well. It hadn’t established the relationships with providers and insurers that would ensure that its product was the one they selected. Doing so would require a marketing budget of tens of millions of dollars, in a sub-sector where the entire annual market is a few hundred million dollars.
Just think about this for a minute. A medical technology company is going public to generate the money it needs to advertise its products to hospital directors and insurance-company reimbursement officers. This entails significant extra expenditures for marketing, the new stocks issued to fund the marketing will ultimately have to pay dividends, banks will have to be paid to supervise the IPO that was needed to generate the funds to finance the marketing campaign (presumably charging the industry-cartel standard 7%)…and all this will have to be paid for by driving up the price the company charges to deliver its technologies. But beyond the added expense, why would anyone think that a system in which marketing plays such a large role is likely to be more effective, to lead to better treatment, than the kind of process of expert review that governs grant awards at NIH or publishing decisions at peer-reviewed journals? Why do we think that a system in which ads for Claritin are all over the subways will generate better overall health results than one where a national review board determines whether Claritin delivers treatment outcomes for some populations sufficiently superior to justify its added expense over similar generics? What do we expect from a system in which, as ProPublica reports today, body imaging companies hire telemarketers to sell random people CT scans over the phone?
Matthew Yglesias takes the right tack by comparing the medical industry to the shoe industry, where we all agree that the private sector produces far better shoes at far lower cost than could be produced by a state-owned manufacturer. I think the analogy is also helpful when we add in the dimension of marketing. Beyond a certain point, you can’t explain the value of a great pair of shoes in any rational fashion. The reason a pair of Air Jordans was vastly superior to a pair of nondescript Soviet sneakers in 1989 was only partly that they were more durable, or had better support and traction. Most of the added value wasn’t there. It was in the interplay of marketing and fashion. The satisfaction customers derive from marketing and fashion is absolutely real; in the case of shoes, it’s practically the whole point. But in the case of medicine, it usually shouldn’t have any place in decisionmaking. We shouldn’t be aiming to make Americans happy by marketing medically useless knee surgery to them and then letting them walk down the street feeling all fine and dandy with snazzy new knees that aren’t actually any better than the old ones. Not in the publically insured sector, anyway. Medically unnecessary cosmetic surgery is fine, but not on the taxpayer’s dime.
The other key thing to pay attention to is who this marketing campaign was targeted at: key decisionmakers at providers and insurance companies. Those are the people who decide whether medical procedures get ordered. It’s not patients. Patients aren’t going to experience a loss of freedom or satisfaction because an expert reviewer at the Independant Payment Advisory Board makes the call as to whether a procedure is medically beneficial, rather than the corresponding bureaucrat at their insurance provider or at the for-profit clinic they’re attending. Health care is different from buying shoes. Which is why it wouldn’t be at all surprising if a board of 15 experts could play a major role in reducing expenses and improving care outcomes in the American medical industry. That’s what corresponding boards of experts in France, Germany, Britain, Canada, the Netherlands and so on do, which is why their health-care systems cost half what ours does, cover everyone in their countries, and generally provide better care.
