[Editor's note: Ron May here. This report is the calm before the storm. Tomorrow you'll have the Connected World conference, things I found out at the SAB Poker Charity on Saturday, the Executives' Club and Bootstrapper Breakfast for entrepreneurs which I attended this morning. Nancy Sullivan and Phil Tadros and more. The Bootstrapper meeting is held at the 300 N. LaSalle Cafe overlooking the river and also in the same building as BCG and a really big law firm whose name has escaped me right now. But even though I am now in MoMo, they did not allow me to attend because my RSVP was not in time and even though Trace Johnson seems to have all the personality of three day old sushi, I hope to meet him and attend in July. It is true that the security at the Navteq building is ridiculous, possibly because of Boeing and possibly because of a data center there.

But there is a problem with the MoMo meeting that I feel compelled to tell you about. The speaker, Dan Slowinski of www.nerdery.com, did not go to Cupertino. Their advertising for the event says that he did, but he did not and the attendees, about 45 in all, got second and third hand info. The presentation was a PP of about 30 minutes and the whole place was cleared out by 7:15pm, unless you wanted to hang out for cold pizza. Since I was not there, I am relying on those who were for this info. But last month when my buddy Mike Rhodes attended, he told me that the event was "uneventful." There was little value, Rhodes told me. I am excited about attending MoMo, but my info. is that since Anthony Hand left for the left coast, the new curators are pretty lame and they also were warned to make the organization more democratic rather than cliquish, I am hearing. On top of that, As Seen on Phone seems to be doing more than nipping at the heels of MoMo. Thanks BTW to my buddy who wrote up the event and cannot reveal his name because the firm he works for would have to pre-approve it.]

New World Ventures Invests $15 million in Chicago-based SMS Assist
SMS Assist’s proprietary technology platform simplifies facilities maintenance for chain retailers

CHICAGO – (www.twitter.com/techaccesstv) – New World Ventures, Chicago’s largest technology venture capital firm, today announced a $15 million investment in Chicago-based SMS Assist, a national facilities maintenance company that uses technology to simplify critical maintenance services.

SMS Assist’s robust technology platform enables it to access and manage more than 10,000 sub-contractors nationally. SMS Assist’s system tracks service orders, bills customers, provides compliance reports and manages quality. Customers also benefit from real-time visibility into work orders and expenses by store, service type and geography – data that is unique to SMS Assist. Over the past 5 years, SMS Assist’s proprietary technology and unique approach to customer service have driven rapid growth. The company today provides services at more than 20,000 locations for national clients including big- and small-box mass merchants and specialty retailers.

Using its proprietary online platform, ServiceTrackā„¢, SMS Assist manages and provides critical maintenance services, such as floor cleaning, snow removal, landscaping, HVAC maintenance and other interior and exterior services. SMS Assist dramatically simplifies facilities maintenance, offering retailers a single, automated source for multiple services at all their retail locations.

“SMS Assist brings facilities maintenance into the 21st century,” said Matt McCall, partner at New World Ventures. “We are impressed by their exponential growth and the amazing amount of automation and technology SMS has deployed in what is traditionally a very labor-intensive industry. SMS has developed a platform that provides the highest quality service with the lowest cost structure.”

“Most large and small retailers are looking to consolidate their facilities maintenance but have been unable, until now, to find a provider with the systems to manage a complex, national network,” said Mike Rothman, SMS Assist founder and CEO. “With the backing of New World Ventures, we will accelerate market penetration and push our technology lead even further.”

McCall will join the SMS Assist board of directors.

SMS Assist is the latest of New World Ventures’ investments in interconnected platforms and services, a primary focus area for the group. Other New World investments in this area include Active Networks (NASDAQ: ACTV), Playdom, TicketsNow, Alliance Health Networks, Sittercity and Zinch.

Partner Development executive led off program as host of the space.
Navteq wants to partner with “sustainable” firms that need locational services and a means to get paid for it. In other words “show me the money”. Very Chicago, love it. Navteq is a b2b company, very dependent on partners, so not much motive to compete with their partners.

Mr. Schwartz, co-organizer, introduced program and presenter. Here is all you need to know about mobile Monday. Schwartz asked for those looking for jobs = zero, none nada. Employers looking to hire = four including Lextech and Crowd Savvy. If you can program iOS or AndroidOS or java script you are hired in Chicago.

Dan Slowinski summarized the apple development conference in Vegas. Dan works @Nerdery.com. Logo for Nerdery is shirt-pocket with A pen. Perfect dont you think? Though multiple pens is the engineer caricature, right? You get it though. I don’t know anyone under 30 that can write with a pen anyway, so this engineering joke has a limited lifespan.

iCloud will give you 5g free, but not competition for drop box. Basically a hard drive for all the content that is valuable to you: pictures music movies documents calendars email and even your preferences for viewing or using a program. What is different is that iCloud will push all this content to all your devices and synchronize updates.

iOS5 mobile phones – this fall launch
TOTALLY PC free. So you don’t need iTunes to update software etc.
Steals Android notification feature
Twitter integration
Crop photos
Location based to-do not just time based.
Big deal and very promising per Dan is improved memory management
Backward app compatibility, better upgrade your apps per Dan . Not likely to be stable.

OSX iLion – in July for $29.00
Trying to keep look and feel consistent across iPad iPhone Mac or iCloud.

Executive Summary of The Coming Age of M2M and Connected Devices issued by Peggy Smedley and Mike Carrozzo, copyright 2011, Connected World Magazine

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The question of whether or not we will see 50 billion connected devices by the year 2020 all depends on how you define the marketplace. But therein lies the rub. These days it seems everyone has his or her own definition for what is considered a connected device. Without a clear and concise definition of connected devices, as well as M2M (machine-to-machine) for that matter, we cannot accurately project how big the market will grow going forward.

Machine-to-machine data connections are growing. So too is the number of connected devices. In the first portion of this report definitions for both types of connected devices were established. In the second section of this report, the market for U.S. carriers is examined with regard to how each network operator separates and counts devices when it is tallying up its total number of connections.

To appreciate the total number of M2M connections that exist today it’s important to separate the M2M data connections from the connected devices and grasp the anomaly in the marketplace. While carriers have a clear distinction in the way in which they are disclosing such numbers, others’ methods for tabulating numbers may not be as evident.

For years, the M2M industry and the companies it served kept a somewhat low profile. Outside of the industry itself, few people knew what M2M was, and those who did formed a somewhat exclusive club. Those days are gone. Today, M2M is a well-known concept across many vertical markets, whether it goes by the name Internet of Things, embedded intelligence, or another of the many terms available. But what exactly is machine-to-machine? Now that M2M is a recognizable term, it needs a consistent definition.

M2M connects people, devices, networks, and everyday objects while communicating and interpreting data that can be acted upon in a timely manner. This is true whether the M2M deployment is geared toward business or consumer use.

Common M2M data connections include such things as smart meters, POS (point-of-sale) terminals, asset tracking devices, and remote monitoring systems, to name a few, and are typically deployed in an enterprise environment. But there is also a subset of M2M, called consumer-facing devices. Such devices that fall into this category include ereaders, connected pedometers, and personal navigation devices. These consumer-facing devices serve a single purpose–the transfer of data for the purposes of making realtime decisions.

Then you have such devices as an ereader, tablet, or netbook. While it is true they can perform M2M functions, this is not the sole purpose of these devices. Therefore, these always-connected devices fall into a different category called connected devices.

Along with a consistent definition of M2M and connected devices, the industry needs consistency in the way it tracks true M2M connections. Research analysts often report the number of M2M connections, but it can be difficult to compare the findings, as not everyone agrees on what qualifies as an M2M connection. Cellular carriers also do not all report M2M connections in the same way, nor do they all agree on what is considered M2M versus a connected device.

In fact, many carriers continue to use traditional methods of reporting voice subscribers in a pre-subscriber and post-subscriber manner and are intent on applying the same methods when reporting data connections. By and large, cellular carriers are basing their definition of M2M by the relationship they have with the subscriber rather than by pure function of the device. The new data-intensive nature of how we live and work requires greater accuracy and specificity as to the classification of devices.

By adopting a standard method of counting connections, a standard way to define the M2M market can be achieved. This will allow businesses that are thinking of adopting M2M systems or that are supplying M2M components to acquire a true vision of the market and where it is going. By tracking the growth of M2M connections consistently, it can be assured that everyone, from investors to start-up companies, is looking at the same picture to draw conclusions. Ultimately, this can help determine the right course for the future and the bottomline.

Glossary from above report, The Coming Age of M2M and Connected Devices

GLOSSARY

ARPU (average revenue per user)
This term is used by telecommunications companies as a measure of revenue generated per user of per unit.

CHURN
Telecommunications companies use the term churn to describe the level ot attrition of customers from a particular device or service.

CDMA (code division multiple access)
This digital wireless technology is a spread-spectrum technology, which decreases potential interference while achieving privacy. CDMA is the basis for 3G wireless technologies and is used U.S. carriers Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

Consumer-Centric Device Utilization
An M2M scenario in which two-way communication is occurring between a machine and a connected device. Typical scenarios include using a smartphone to adjust the settings on your smart meter remotely or a doctor using a tablet to remotely access patient data

Connected Device
General purpose products with embedded intelligence designed to collect, communicate, and relay data in realtime.

Consumer Connected Devices
Consumer-facing devices have the primary purpose of transferring data in order to make a realtime decision. The main function of these devices is to carry out an M2M function and would typically be purchased and used by consumers. Examples include GPS (global positioning systems), PNDs (personal navigation devices), connected photo frames, and ereaders.

EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution)
As a 3G, high-speed data technology, EDGE has peak theoretical network rates of 474 kbps and average throughout of 70-130 kbps. These average rates are fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services and EDGE also supports PTT (push-to-talk) services.

Embedded Connected Devices
General-purpose products typically with no human intervention which contain embedded intelligence designed to collect, create, communicate, and relay data in realtime for monitoring and control.

EV-DO (evolution data optimized)
This 3G cellular data protocol can provide broadband wireless connectivity at high speeds.

GPRS (general packet radio service)
A packet-data technology, GPRS allows GSM operators to launch wireless data services. GPRS is often referred to as 2.5G technology because it is a GSM operator’s first step towards 3G and is also the first step in wireless data services.

GSM (global system for mobile communications)
A 2G (second generation) wireless technology, GSM provides high-quality voice and circuit-switched data services in a wide variety of spectrum bands, including 450, 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz.

Oftentimes the catch-all term ‘GSM family of technologies’ is used to refer to GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, and LTE. This provides a smooth and cost-effective evolution to 3G (third generation) wireless technology. U.S. carriers AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM technology.

HSPA+ (high speed packet access plus)
HSPA+, also known as HSPA Evolution and Evolved HSPA, will apply some of the techniques developed for LTE (long-term evolution) and allow operators to extend the life of their HSPA networks. As an affordable and incremental upgrade to existing HSPA networks, HSPA+ is being used by some operators as a companion to LTE.

iDEN (integrated dispatch enhance network)
A communications standard that allows users to access phone calls, two-way radio transmissions, paging, and data from one wireless device.

Internet of Things
This term was originated in the late 1990s from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and refers to the networked interconnection of objects and devices. In essence, Internet of Things, IoT , is another term used to describe what M2M enables.

LTE (long term evolution)
LTE is a rather new radio platform technology that is expected to provide downlink peak data rates up to 326 Mbps with 20 MHz bandwidth, and uplink peak data rates up to 86.4 Mbps with 20 MHz bandwidth.

M2M (machine-to-machine)
M2M connects people, devices, networks, and everyday objects while communicating and interpreting data that can be acted upon in a timely manner.

Machine-Centric Device Utilization
An M2M scenario in which two-way communication is occurring between two machines. Examples include remote monitoring, smart devices, and RFID.

Mobile Broadband
Wireless Internet access via a mobile device, such a computer, PC card, or cellphone, is often defined within the industry as mobile broadband. This term is becoming more widely used at the carrier level to define a new generation of products that provide access on the go, such as tablets and netbooks, to name a few.

Multi-Purpose Device
Products connected over a network that receive and transmit data enabled by human intervention.

Postpaid
When a customer is charged for usage in the month prior to using the service and has no limitations on the service used, this is referred to as a postpaid.

Prepaid
When fees for a device or service have been paid for upfront, this is referred to as prepaid. In most instances, prepaid customers have some sort of limit or cap to the amount of data they can use in a given period.

Single-Purpose Device
Self-contained microprocessors and sensors embedded into everyday objects and connected to networks interpreting and transmitting data without the need for human intervention.

UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system)
As a voice and high-speed data technology, UMTS is part of the Intl. Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2000 family of third- generation wireless standards. The radio technology used in UMTS is WCDMA (Wideband CDMA), which results in the two terms often being interchanged. UMTS is based on IP technology with data rates of up to 350 kbps, with average speeds of 200-300 kbps for both the uplink and the downlink.

WiMAX (wireless interoperability for microwave access)
As the name for the family of IEEE 802.16 wireless standards, WiMAX provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances with applications including “last mile” broadband connections and hotspots.

Wireless Spectrum
This refers to a band of frequencies in which wireless signals
travel, carrying voice and data.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I have just returned from one of the best weeks I can remember.

Australian financial services corp. AMP host every two years a week-long conference on innovation and thought leadership called the Amplify Festival. I was privileged to be invited together with quite a galaxy of luminaries from the digital, futures, and innovation space. Traveling out from Washington, DC, was also internet guru Mike Nelson (a member of C-PET’s Board of Directors) and corporate blogging maven Debbie Weil. Amplify is an innovative approach to introducing innovation into a major company. Everyone in the company is invited to take time off to attend. The Chairman, CEO, and key board members, were there session after session.

If you would like to sample, here is my opening keynote on how to handle the future.
Also, the link to the Amplify Festival main page here.

And below is something a little different – an op-ed published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the power of groupthink and the vital importance of outliers and mavericks in shaping knowledge and framing choices in the context of very rapid change. As ever, your responses will be appreciated.

Best,

Nigel Cameron

————————————————————————
Groupthink hasn’t worked, it’s time to embrace the maverick

Nigel M. de S. Cameron

Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies

As the Arab spring continues to unravel into an Arab summer, the most important lesson is that hardly anyone knew it was coming. Much like the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Wall Street could it be that as much as conventional wisdom may be conventional it is not always reliably wise?

I recently hosted a conference in Washington on the future of nanotechnology. All kinds of experts were round the table talking tech and policy and business. Then one of them made a stunning statement. She was there on behalf of a big, mainstream environmentalist group. “I have never,” she stated, “been on such a diverse panel in Washington.” There was a brief but palpable intake of air around the room. I thanked her for the compliment before adding that I was now more concerned for Washington than I was before.

Whom do we invite round the table when the questions are big and the stakes high? It tends to be those in the centre; the mainstream thinker whose wisdom is regarded as conventional.

When will we ever learn? We are still paying for the lesson we learned from Wall Street in 2008.

Conventional wisdom can be dead wrong, even in the hands of the smartest people because they tend to agree with each other. People with way-out views are kept at arm’s-length.

Whatever the issue, if your views deviate too far from the mean, however articulate you may be, you are unlikely to get invited, funded or promoted.

We have learned a lot this past generation about the value of diversity in age, gender, and ethnicity but we have learned little about the enormous and growing value of diversity of opinion.

Of course, we do disagree about a lot of things. With friends, and with co-workers. But we live in communities of ideas that set boundaries around acceptable diversity of thinking, and make sure we keep out those who challenge our shared assumptions.

We don’t want to rehash old issues we regard as closed. We don’t want to give room to opinions we find deeply objectionable – or threatening. Most of us find it challenging to take forward our thinking when there is someone in the room always, always asking why?

So our natural tendency is to put unconscious faith in Groupthink, the tendency for everyone’s thinking to move in the same direction to the exclusion of any serious questioning.

People in management know all about this as a problem for work groups and other teams. But it is more insidious and far more dangerous on the grand scale.

What brought Wall Street down, and with it threatened the entire global order? The G-word. And on smaller scales: what led Monsanto into huge losses in the late 1990s and ensured that Europe rejected genetically-modified food? What led Detroit to near-oblivion as they insisted on producing 1950s-style autos into the 21st century? What about the power company TEPCO and the nuclear disaster that the entirely predictable tsunami sparked in Japan?

Knowledge is building very fast, disciplines are converging, globalisation is changing the ground-rules of everything. Change powered by Moore’s Law, the digitisation process and the revolution in communication is driving shifts in the technical, economic and social order that most of us strain to grasp. Yet the faster change takes place and the greater its disruptive, innovative power, the harder it will be to make good choices.

So who should be party to the conversation? This is where the outliers come in; people who are articulate and serious, but outside the mainstream assumptions that generally drive conversations. Experts tend to resist the participation of thosewith unorthodox opinions. It needs to become the norm for them to sit round the table in every discussion. All articulate voices round the table; all the time.

This approach is hardly new. The century before last, US poet, essayist and journalist Walt Whitman asked the question his own way. “Have you learned the lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you? Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed passage with you?” In the 21st century, great value lies at the extremities of opinion; and we need to harvest it as we move through change faster than we have ever known before.

Please join the Chicago Clean Energy Alliance for our next quarterly event to be held on June 23rd.Our Presenting Sponsor, Mayer Brown, will be hosting a panel to address a hot topic that is on everyone’s mind: transmission development. The lack of available transmission in areas of high wind and solar resources affects developers nationwide. With changing FERC rulings on the privatization of transmission development, is transmission poised to become the next big boom? A reception and open networking will follow the conclusion of the panel.

The CCEA & Mayer Brown have assembled the following panel of energy experts:

Confirmed: Dan Foley, CEO, Acciona
Confirmed: Hans Detweiler, Director of Development, Clean Line Energy
Confirmed: John Flynn, VP, Strategic Planning & Business Development, American Transmission
Confirmed: Steven T. Naumann, Vice President of Wholesale Market Development for Exelon Corporation
Moderator: Paul J. Astolf, Partner, Mayer Brown
This panel will address:

Cost allocation issues between developers, utilities, and governments.
How to create a supportive policy environment to foster privatized transmission development.
What necessary policy steps does the renewable industry need to take to put more steel in the ground.
How utilities analyze transmission and interconnection issues when analyzing PPA bids.
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
Cost: Free to energy professionals. Hors d’oeuvres and a liquor bar will be provided courtesy of Mayer Brown.

Schedule:

4:00pm: Opening remarks
4:10pm: Panel Presentation
(Transmission Development–One of Renewable Energy’s Biggest Hurdles)
4:50pm: Q&A
5:15pm: Reception Starts
7:30pm: Close
Location: 71 South Wacker Drive (corner of Monroe), Mayer Brown Offices Please note you will need to enter on the Franklin side of the building. 72 S. Franklin Ave.

Attendance: We are expecting 300+ Energy Related Professionals so please sign up before space runs out. Please note — this is a business-to-business networking event for those in the energy industry! If you are a job seeker please contact Darrin Stern dstern@theccea.org for volunteer opportunities. CCEA reserves the right to refuse entrance to those unrelated to the industry.

About the CCEA: The Chicago Clean Energy Alliance was formed to connect professionals in Chicago who are related to the energy industry. The CCEA provides thought leadership on power generation issues with a particular focus on renewable technologies. We are always thinking about new ways to expand and bring new value to the CCEA and our audience. If you have an idea or would like to be involved, please email Bryan Villano at Bryan@TheCCEA.org.
