* Connolly tells me he woke up at 3am a couple of days ago and there was a whooshing sound outside the window. A guy, 24 years old, had jumped from the 42nd floor at 111 E. Chestnut and landed on the 9th floor Bar-B-Que deck. Meanwhile, Connolly is going on a whole decade now since Howard Solomon canned his a** at Ruder Finn and for a few years he was a good gofer for me, but for two years now, more worthless than two t&&s on a bull. He and his “wife”, the lovely Vikki Valentine who works for the dean of the business school at Loyola after 30 years at McDonald’s, have been rehabbing their condo at 111 East Chestnut and it has been one headache after another, but Connolly is a master at distracting himself with one extraneous thing or another. BTW, Jane Byrne moved out and so did John Cusack. I am not sure about Jack Ryan who also lives (or lived) in the building. But Connolly now has to appear before a judge on the 16th on West Harrison Street, I believe, since some guy in his building wants to get a TRO against him. This gets treated like a domestic violence dispute, he told me. And this guy threatened to kill Connolly.
So what else is new? I seem to be surrounded by mental cases. Connolly and our bud Tom Bennett. Don’t get me started.
Anyway, Connolly does keep me posted on some things:
————————————————————————————-
Dear Mr. May,
I am writing in response to your news about Brian D. Connolly and current TRO filed against him. I want to set the record straight.
Mr. Connolly has verbally abused, threatened, stalked and blackmailed several people at 111. He does not stop. The person (and his wife) who filed the TRO are genuinely afraid of Mr. Connolly. Based on his erratic behavior and persistent ways of distorting information to his advantage, the couple had every reason to believe he would perpetrate a dangerous act impulsively. In addition, five cease-and-desist letters were filed by resident owners and distributed to Mr. Connolly within the last two weeks.
Based on Mr. Connolly’s checkered past (i.e., Mambo, Amanda Chapel, harassment of Mr. Howard Solomon, Emergency Order of Protection filed by 1st wife in 1995, stalking/harassment of ex-girlfriend, calling his challengers’ employers to get them fired b/c they disagreed with him), people at 111 have every legit reasons to be terrified of him. People do not change.
Mr. Connolly is simply incapable of taking any responsibility for his destructive actions.
If you are (supposedly) a friend, please act like one by encouraging him to seek intervention for his emotional and mental well-being before it gets a out of hand. Otherwise, you are exploiting him for the amusement of your audience who happens to know of this once rising, talented man as opposed to what he is now: a tragic story.

Sixty-four years ago, your friend, a giant was born.
Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt spent his entire adult life fighting to show that it is possible to make this world a better place. We must have the honesty to see reality as it is, we must have the courage to challenge assumptions, and above all, we must use the gift of thinking. Having applied these principles to various management fields, he created the Theory of Constraints. His concepts and teachings have expanded beyond management and are being used in healthcare, education, counseling, government, agriculture and personal growth – to name a few fields using TOC. His legacy is invaluable.
On June 11th, 2011 at noon, Eli Goldratt passed away at his home in Israel in company of his family and close friends.
The strength and passion of Eli allowed him to spend his last days sharing and delivering his latest insights and breakthroughs to a group of people who have committed to transfer this knowledge to the TOC Community during the upcoming Theory of Constraints International Certification Organization Conference in New York.
It was Eli’s last wish to take TOC to the next level – truly standing on the shoulders of the Giant he is.
“I smile and start to count on my fingers: One, people are good. Two, every conflict can be removed. Three, every situation, no matter how complex it initially looks, is exceedingly simple. Four, every situation can be substantially improved; even the sky is not the limit. Five, every person can reach a full life. Six, there is always a win-win solution. Shall I continue to count?”
Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt

EGGS VERSUS WORKER SAFETY, OSHA & NIOSH ADMINISTRATORS DISCUSS WORK SAFETY AT AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS’ CHICAGO CONFERENCE TODAY
CHICAGO, IL (June 13, 2011) — “Recently there was a major recall of tainted eggs, about three million,” Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) David Michaels, Ph.D., told 4,000 safety and health professionals at the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Chicago conference and exposition today. “What bothered me was, yes there was uproar over the tainted eggs, which was not good, but no one seemed to care about the rough working conditions for employees.
“I mean, people get more concerned with free range chickens and their cages. They seem to care more about the chickens than the workers and the work environment producing chickens and eggs,” Michaels continued. “That needs to change. I mean people are calling for safer cages for chickens more so than worker conditions. It’s like when Upton Sinclair was upset when his book ‘The Jungle’, thatcame out in the early 1900’s, led to increased food safety instead of improved working conditions, which was his focus. Food safety is important, but again work safety falls by the wayside.”
In front of thousands of occupational safety, health and environmental professionals from around the world, Michaels and the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) John Howard, MD, Ph.D., discussed the state of worker safety today along with issues such as injury recordkeeping, research, regulations, the federal budget and its affect on OSHA and NIOSH programs with a ripple effect on SH&E.
Michaels began the egg discussion following a question asking what the best advice would be from them for occupational safety and health professionals today.
“We need to make workplace safety in this nation just as important as tainted eggs,” Michaels said.
Howard and Michaels noted that silica regulations, new healthcare worker safety standards and addressing how to contain the spread of flu are on the agenda when asked about new initiatives.
Michaels and Howard both congratulated ASSE on its 100th year anniversary and said they look forward to continuing to work with occupational safety, health and environmental professionals to continue to protect people, property and the environment. “We know how hard you work every day and night doing everything you possibly can to protect your co-workers. We sincerely thank you he told the crowd. You are the silent heroes of the workplace and we need your support as you need ours,” Michaels said.
Founded in 1911 and celebrating its centennial, the 100-year-old Des Plaines, IL-based ASSE is the oldest safety society and has 34,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members who lead, manage, supervise, research and consult on safety, health, transportation and environmental issues in all industries, government, labor, health care and education. WSJ Blog: June 7th: Will Investors Take Groupon’s Andrew Mason Seriously?
From the WSJ Blog.
June 7, 2011, 12:28 PM ET Will Investors Take Groupon’s Andrew Mason Seriously?Article Comments (2) Venture Capital Dispatch HOME PAGE »Email Print Twitter
By Scott Austin
Andrew Mason’s oddball tendencies have served him well as the head of a quirky Internet upstart.
Andrew Mason’s Wall Street Journal headcut portrait, which he insisted be drawn from his goofy driver’s license photo. But now that Groupon Inc. is on the cusp of holding an initial public offering, will the 30-year-old’s unconventional leadership style resonate with public investors?
It’s no secret that Mason doesn’t take himself seriously. That was on full display last week at All Things Digital’s D9 conference, where he insisted The Wall Street Journal use his driver’s license photo — complete with a goofy grin — as the model for an engraving used for all speakers at the conference. He then jokingly stared down Kara Swisher in an onstage interview when she asked about a possible IPO.
Many of Mason’s charmingly humorous antics are well-documented. As Charlie Rose explained in his introduction of Mason before a TV interview with him in December, the CEO once hired a man to walk around the office in a ballerina outfit with no explanation just to see the reaction. Mason’s Twitter account includes a picture of him excitedly unwrapping a Nintendo Wii in what looks like his underwear, and his Groupon bio claims he “spends most of his time writing his life coach training book, Unleash the Power Within the Power Within: Self Help For Self Helpers.”
Mason’s Groupon bio links to this picture of a book he’s supposedly writing. Other of his eccentric moments aren’t exactly well-known, like a little-seen, nine-minute video he posted on YouTube three years ago of himself in his underwear performing yoga. Underneath the clip, which he posted under the username “picnichouse,” he wrote, “I’m appalled that an industry has grown around teaching a practice as wholesome and spiritual as yoga, so I decided to create my own free video to help people get started.” There are two comments from viewers from two years ago: “terrible technique” and “gross.” Another video posted by him around the same time shows Mason giving a review of a previous night’s “Desperate Housewives” episode, while a third clip shows him pulling an “Austin Powers,” pretending as if he’s walking down stairs and going down an escalator and elevator.
Mason’s playful side no doubt pervades Groupon’s culture in a positive way. Last year, as an April Fool’s Day gag, Mason hilariously filmed himself pretending to be a creepy guy named Greg who pitches (amateurishly) a promotion called “Monkey for a Week.” In the video, Mason dances absurdly to Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” in between hawking the monkey-loaning business. As Hemispheres Magazine noted, Mason makes new hires watch the video, and “the tone for the rest of an employee’s time here is set,” according to Groupon’s marketing manager. The company’s copywriters thrive on comedy to drive their creativity, and it shows in their colorful descriptions of daily deals, as well as at company headquarters in Chicago where they built a strange conference room designed to look like the bedroom of a mysterious man named Michael who still lives there.
A screenshot from Mason’s video of him performing yoga. But as likable as Mason is, some buttoned-up investors might wonder whether he also takes his company seriously. In an interview with Time in February, he said of Groupon: “To me, as somebody who likes to come up with ideas, it’s kind of stupid. Like, I’ve had way better ideas, way cooler ideas.” And in that December interview with Rose, after articulately and sincerely explaining the business, he said at one point: “I think when people call us the fastest growing company ever, I think of us as like the N-Sync of websites, like we have had good tunes, but we’re not The Beatles. It’s not like we’re the best thing ever.”
Even if honest, that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in a man who is on the verge of becoming the CEO of a publicly traded company worth billions of dollars, especially for investors who are already questioning whether Groupon’s money-losing business model is viable and defensible among all the copycat sites.
Mason’s photo on his Twitter account. In the few days since Groupon filed for an IPO, bloggers have been unsparing with their criticism of the company: Fortune’s Dan Primack wondered why Groupon is in such a rush to go public, saying he “felt queasy” when thinking about how Groupon’s founders and early investors have taken hundreds of millions of dollars off the table. Forbes’ Eric Savitz questioned Groupon’s accounting methods, declaring an emphasis in the IPO filing of “adjusted consolidated segment operating income” harks back to the dot-com boom days when Web start-ups used all sorts of atypical measures to hide true earnings. David Hannson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and a partner at Web design firm 37signals who has a popular blog, wrote that it appears the venture firms which invested $950 million in January are simply looking for a quick flip.
Those are serious accusations that may have to remain unanswerable during the IPO “quiet period.” But once Groupon goes public, everything will be placed under a magnifying glass and Mason will need to constantly defend his company.
A screen shot from Mason’s spoof video in which he pitches a monkey-loaning business. That’s not to say Mason can’t do that effectively. While he stumbled earlier this year with his handling of Groupon’s controversial Super Bowl commercials, he’s proven to be perfectly capable of speaking earnestly and intelligently about the company’s strategy. Mason’s peers speak highly of him and give him credit for not only helping to come up with the daily deal idea but creating a funky work culture that enhances employee morale. And very few chief executives have had to grow up professionally as quickly as Mason, who just three years ago was the head of a scrappy activist start-up called The Point, the predecessor to Groupon that empowered large groups of people to come together and solve problems. The idea never gained traction, but the collective group mentality served as the basis for Groupon.
But perhaps in this case, perception is more important than reality. Venture capital investors might not mind all the silliness, but to public investors, the joke might fall flat.
The Lighter Side of Andrew Mason
Here’s a look at some of the funnier moments involving Mason, who earned a music degree from Northwestern, and, after trying to make it big with a band, started a website called The Point in 2007 with a million dollars in angel capital.
Prank Goes Good
Groupon’s employees know Mason loves a good prank. He once hired a male performance artist to roam the office for five days wearing a tutu and staying mute. In another gag, Mason involved the mysterious tenant, Michael, who supposedly shares a studio apartment at the headquarters. To truncate a colorful description from TimeOut Chicago: On an otherwise-normal Monday morning in August, Andrew Mason storms down a hallway at Groupon’s Chicago HQ, angrier than any of his employees have ever seen him. “Running with the Devil” blares from behind the door of a studio apartment. “Michael, you have to turn it down!” Mason shouts. “And you owe me that money! “Go away!” comes the sharp reply from inside. But Mason keeps knocking. Moments later, the seldom-seen resident erupts into the hallway in a yellow jumpsuit that matches the bandages wrapped around his head. “Andrew’s an idiot!” the man rants. “I don’t have your money. Daddy has your money!” Michael shoves Mason and runs off as he lets loose a final taunt: “You will never get your money, and you’ll never find me!”
Save The Date
Mason announces at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in September a spin-off site called Grouspawn that offers college scholarships to “Groupon babies,” or what he says are children born to couples who used a Groupon on a first date. Ever the comedic actor, Mason soberly explains the site in a backstage interview with TechCrunch: “We think also it may help people kind of rethink the way dating services work. Dating has worked the same way for hundreds of years. People go on a date, people have babies, but the problem with the process is there are no real incentives to do that.”
No (Dull) Comment
Even when he’s dodging a question, Mason can be silly. On the Today Show in December (see clip below), Matt Lauer asked Mason about Google’s $6 billion offer to buy Groupon. Mason responded with a story how in the fourth grade he was made fun of because of his middle name, Divens. “This is answering my question, how?” asked Lauer. Later, Lauer asks, “What do you want to do with your clout?” Mason’s response: “I want to see if I can get more buildings to have laser in their name, the word laser.” It’s clear Mason is uncomfortable with these types of questions. In an onstage interview with Kara Swisher at a conference in Munich, Mason retreated into platitudes in reply to a question about a possible IPO before stopping himself and saying, “I used to watch people doing stuff like what I just did on TV and be like, ‘What a corporate douchebag, I’m never going to be like that.’ And here I am doing it. You made me do it!” After Mason rambles for a bit and says, “We don’t have all the answers yet. We’re figuring things out,” Swisher interrupts and says, “Sorry to put words in your mouth, but you’re basically saying, ‘We’re a f—ed up group of people behind the scenes, but please invest in our IPO.” “Yes,” Mason replies, laughing.
Deal With It
In his letter to potential shareholders, Mason sums up his company’s culture in the IPO filing: “We are unusual and we like it that way. We want the time people spend with Groupon to be memorable. Life is too short to be a boring company. Whether it’s with a deal for something unusual, such as fire dancing classes, or a marketing campaign such as Grouspawn, we seek to create experiences for our customers that make today different enough from yesterday to justify getting out of bed.”
