They had an overflow crowd of more than 160.If Jerry Mitchell could get a crowd like that, we would have to attend his funeral since the shock would induce a heart attack.

Here it is. Scott just sent it:

Ron,

Martin Cooper's presentation titled the "Wireless Revolution Continues", is available for viewing at www.cpd.iit.edu/speakersseries/. Martin Cooper, the inventor of the cell phone, recently presented at Illinois Institute of Technology's Rice Campus on Wednesday, May 18th.

In case you need some background information....
Telecommunications pioneer, and IIT alum, Martin Cooper, explores the Wireless Revolution that started over 35 years ago and discusses the future revolutionary societal changes that wireless communications will make possible.

Martin Cooper is a pioneer in the wireless communications industry, an inventor, entrepreneur and executive. He has been a contributor to the technology of personal wireless communications for over 50 years. He conceived the first portable cellular phone in 1973 and is cited in the Guinness Book of World Records for making the first cellular telephone call. Cooper knew then that people needed the freedom that comes from anywhere, anytime telephony in contrast to being tethered to a desk or a car. He has been referred to as the father of portable cellular telephony and is recognized as an innovator in spectrum management.

Cooper was a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy, a division manager and head of R&D for Motorola during a 29 year tenure. As an entrepreneur he has started a number of businesses including co-founding GreatCall, Inc., maker of the Jitterbug phone and service and ArrayComm, the world leader in smart antenna technology.

Cooper was an inaugural member of the WHF Wireless Hall of Fame; Red Herring magazine named him one of the Top 10 Entrepreneurs of 2000; the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Business named him a Transformation Technology Change Leader; and he is a recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal. He was recently awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Science and Technology and, in 2010, was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering.

He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and an honorary doctorate from the Illinois Institute of Technology on whose Board of Trustees he serves.

TechAmerica Commends Governor Quinn on Illinois Innovation Network and Startup Illinois Initiatives

Chicago, IL – Governor Pat Quinn today announced the launch of two synergistic initiatives, the Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) and Startup Illinois. As a result, Illinois becomes the first state in the Union to launch a state specific initiative in conjunction with Startup America. Both programs will work in unison to support entrepreneurship and innovation in Illinois by leveraging resources at the state and national level.

“Innovation is the key to being competitive in the global marketplace, which is why we must do everything we can to help our businesses develop new and innovative ideas and technologies,” said Governor Quinn. “Given our commitment to fostering innovation and helping businesses grow, it is only fitting that Startup America Partnership chose Illinois as its first Startup region.”

The Governor’s newly-established Illinois Innovation Council has allowed both public and private sector leaders to work together on initiatives to enhance Illinois’ ecosystem and startup formation opportunities. The Illinois Innovation Network is a new program created through the Council to provide an open platform for companies, service providers, academia, research institutions and community leaders to connect and share best practices as well as resources to support and accelerate Illinois’ growth.

“Illinois has a strong community of innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Warren Ribley, Director, Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity. “The Illinois Innovation Network is an important strategic priority for our agency and the state in support of promoting and driving economic growth. We’re thrilled to see the broad engagement of local and national business and community leaders to align public and private resources to this effort.”

Earlier this year, the Obama Administration launched Startup America, a new initiative in partnership with private foundations and leading high-tech businesses to “celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation.” Today, Governor Quinn and Mr. Scott Case, CEO, Startup America Partnership, announced that Illinois is joining in the national effort to promote high tech entrepreneurship by connecting the Illinois Innovation Network with Startup Illinois. This new component of Startup America will help Illinois based affiliates and entrepreneurs leverage technology, content and tools to access national resources and celebrate the success of the Illinois entrepreneurial community at the local and national level.

“TechAmerica applauds Governor Quinn, the Obama Administration and Startup America for making innovation and entrepreneurship a key focus for growing our state and national economy,” said T. Kendall Hunt, Chairman, CEO, VASCO Data Security International, Inc., Chair of TechAmerica Midwest, and member of the Illinois Innovation Council. “TechAmerica is fully committed to supporting these initiatives to help drive growth for our industry and local economy.”

Social Dev Camp 2011

I was doing some cleaning this weekend trying to get organized. I went through endless piles of papers, business cards and handouts sorting them in mad fury in attempts to get caught up. I ran across my name tag from last year’s Social Dev Camp and wondered what Tim Courtney had planned for this year’s event. Mark your calendars! SocialDevCamp Chicago is August 26-28. Their website 2011.socialdevcampchicago.com/ says their fourth annual event will be held this year at the DePaul student center rather than IIT like last year.

#SDCChi is a weekend conference + unconference + hackathon all about making the most of the social web, with talks linking social business strategy with the nuts-and-bolts of application development. It’s the event for social app and platform developers, mobile developers, strategists, evangelists, and enthusiasts. Check out last year’s website 2010.socialdevcampchicago.com/ and videos of last year’s track sessions. vimeo.com/sdcchi/videos

Recent Poll Says Traditional Coupons Beat Groupon
May 22, 2011
By Kris Ashton, Daily Deal Media

According to a recent Harris Interactive poll Groupon may be getting all the attention but traditional coupons are still the winner with consumers. In the survey which polled 2,045 online shoppers, 76 percent of shoppers that use both coupon and daily deal sites said coupon sites offered better savings. 82 percent of those polled also said they felt more loyalty to businesses that provided consistent savings when compared to those that offered only the occasional discounts.
The poll was commissioned by WhaleShark Media, which, by the way, just happens to own seven online coupon sites. Just one of these sites, RetailMeNot.com, has anywhere remotely close to the traffic that Groupon has and without traffic, how are they selling coupons or in this case how do they figure they can claim any kind of victory?
Of course we’re talking about two very different types of coupons so it’s like comparing apples and oranges. There are similarities but it gets kind of murky once you get past the round fruit thing. Both Groupon and traditional coupons can save you money but their methods, the amount you save and their areas of focus are completely different, so the comparisons are very limited. Plus if a name like CheapStingyBargains.com instills confidence when you go to buy your next computer, well good luck with that.

Threads involving Tom Bennett and his removal from the Federal building by U. S. Marshals and Tom’s correspondence with Trib. columnist Eric Zorn [the first email from vermontaigne@gmail.com is Dan Collins]

You know, I’m willing to take Tom’s representation of the incident at face value. It’s a fact that some cops get their jollies by demonstrating arbitrary power, whether they’re Federal Marshals or local beat guys.

Being from Chicago, you ought to know this, yeah?

Sometimes they wave you in with an old pass. Sometimes they make you cool your heels. Sometimes they say the room’s full, when it isn’t. The whole point is to let you know that their whims are more important than your “rights.”

Giving them a pass on this kind of crap is why you’ve got . . . well, Chicago.

Somebody in Fitzy’s office leaked. The prosecution says that it’s not related to this trial. The hell it isn’t. The Trib writer who did the story hasn’t exactly been Judith Millered, has he? The in limine motion accepted, Fitz & Co. don’t have to explain why the differences between this and Scooter Libby are so stark, at least not in the courtroom. But if the Tribune were interested in covering the story from all the important angles, they wouldn’t be getting a pass from the media.

Has the Trib even done an analysis of the legal reasoning behind the in limine motion, and whether or not that reasoning seems valid to legal experts? If not, why not? Are the readers too stupid to understand why that’s important? Would they be confused, the way the first jury supposedly was? Your honor, we can’t talk about this stuff, because it’s not germane to the issue of the guilt of the only person on trial here; it might confuse the bumpkins.

That’s why Tom doesn’t think this is about getting at the root of corruption in Chicago and Illinois at large. He wants to take out this one guy, then wipe his hands together and say, gee, this is a big day for fighting corruption.

Remember: it was Fitzy’s office that prosecuted the Cal Boender trial. They convinced a jury that a Chicago real estate developer, whose property was rendered worthless by Rich Daley, corrupted a Chicago alderman whose father had also gone to jail for corruption. The reason that the property was rendered worthless by Daley’s imperial designation in the first place is so that Boender would have to bring something to the table for the gang.

Corrupting a Chicago alderman? That’s like robbing a 20-year streetwalker of her virginity. Pathetic.

However, I want to stay-on-point with what’s important related USA v. Blagojevich Retrial.

The reason the DOJ Leak is so important is because people “benefited” from same DOJ Leak.

The abrupt halt to the Federal Investigation cleary “benefited” Rod Blagojevich, Jesse Jackson, Jr., and the Obama Administration – among others.
Eric…..once again, how can you and the Chicago Tribune summarily state that same DOJ Leak is irrelevant?

Thomas,

How can you decline, politely or otherwise, to explain to me and/or your readers the real reason why the marshals were wroth with you and gave you the bum’s rush? Once you raise the subject and carry on as though there is some vast conspiracy to silence you and get you out of the courtroom?
The answer to your question, which I’m happy to answer, is that there are no gatekeepers — anyone can ask and post these questions to a theoretically world-wide audience to see if anyone thinks the questions are relevant. I’ve exposed this question about the leak here without reservation on my blog even though I don’t think there’s much to it. So far it looks like there’s about five people who think it’s relevant, and they don’t include Blago or his lawyers who’d be in pretty good position to know.
The only cover up I see here is yours.
Best,
EZ

Hi Tom,
As I noted, there was a gaping hole in your narrative of your troubles with the marshals yesterday, and that is what confrontation or incident precipitated them tossing you out. I’ve been in enough courtrooms in my career to know the marshals really don’t give a shit what you’re writing in what venue or whose side anyone thinks you’re on. I’ve waded into many DuPage COunty courtrooms where the prosecutors were staring daggers at me, and never once have the court officials given me any grief, nor have I ever seen bailiffs or deputies or marshals hassle anyone who followed the pretty simple rules. You might recall, however that they did crack down pretty hard on I think it was a Wall Street Journal reporter from the dreaded mainstream media when he broke one of the rules during the last trial.
So if you’re going to tell your story and ask for people to be outraged on your behalf, then tell the whole story.
And if you are working as a journalist, independent or otherwise, check your facts. Milorad was Rod Blagojevich’s family nickname, not his given name.
Regards,
Eric Zorn

Good evening Mr. Zorn:

I hope this email finds you doing well.

My name is Tom Bennett. I am a Citizen Journalist that’s been covering and reporting-upon the USA v. Blagojevich Retrial since it kicked-off on Monday, May 2, 2011.

As you’re aware by now, I was briefly-detained by US Marshal Service – then escorted out of 219 South Dearborn yesterday morning. In the event you’d like to grab a coffee, beer or a sandwich let me know. If not – no worries. Although, I’d be more than happy to share my findings (and analysis) over the past couple of weeks. In addition, I’d love to hear your perspective re: your coverage of the Summer 2010 Trial as I was busy covering (and reporting upon) the USA v. Jon Burge trial that was taking place at same time.
There is no intended bias in my reporting – I’m simply trying to call ‘balls-and-strikes’ and ‘call-the-heavyweight-boxing-match’ of USA v. Blagojevich as I do not have a horse in this race. As an aside, I want to thank you for pointing-out the ALL CAP’s publishing faux pas from yesterday (which has been corrected).

Have a wonderful weekend.

Eric:

Thank you for the invite to your column, however, I will politely decline at this time.

Although, I did find one thing you published in your Change of Subject column to be interesting….specifically, the last comment in same column from this past Thursday (5/19/2011 – Change of Subject: I’m detecting a whiff of poultry):

“Am I — is the Tribune, is the “mainstream media” — the gatekeeper on such inquiries? (tinyurl.com/DOJLeak-Chicagotribunespin)

Your answer was “Nope”.

On this note….I have just one (1) question related to your above-statement.

In your opinion…..who is the gatekeeper on such inquires?

Sincerely,

Hi Tom,
As I noted, there was a gaping hole in your narrative of your troubles with the marshals yesterday, and that is what confrontation or incident precipitated them tossing you out.
Regards,
Eric Zorn

NUCLEAR | CHICAGO: Week 4 of USA v. Blagojevich Retrial: Who leaked Classified Department of Justice information to John Chase and The Chicago Tribune? Are John Chase & Company Co-conspirators in Derailing The Most Sensational Federal Investigation since Watergate?

tinyurl.com/nuclearchicago-blagowatergate

By Thomas R. Bennett, Special Reporter / Journalist covering the USA v. Milorad Blagojevich retrial for The May Report, and Publisher for NUCLEAR | CHICAGO

May 23, 2011 (2:55p CT)

CHICAGO – As an update to my continuing effort to construct a biography of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald as well as provide special reporting related to the retrial of Milorad Blagojevich, I am writing this afternoon to officially report upon and inform The May Report and NuclearChicago readership of the following:

As we enter Week 4 of the USA v. Blagojevich Retrial – there is still a gigantic elephant in the room. Specifically, we still do not have an answer related to who leaked classified Department of Justice (DOJ) information regarding the confidential Blagojevich wiretaps?

What parties may have benefited from the abrupt halt to a multi-year Federal Investigation visa vi John Chase’s December 4, 2008 voicemail to Blagojevich Press Secretary Lucio Guerrero? Which parties may have benefited from the Chicago Tribune’s decision to publish classified DOJ information related to an ongoing Federal Investigation? For starters, a couple parties that may have benefited are the following parties:

1). Jesse Jackson Jr.: Absent John Chase & Chicago Tribune publishing highly-classified DOJ information on December 5, 2008, does Governor Blagojevich consummate his $1,500,000 Pay-to-Play deal with Jesse Jackson, Jr. & Company (Jonathan Jackson, Raghu Nayak, et al)? How is the local and international political landscape impacted upon a corrupt $1,500,000 Pay-to-Play deal being consummated involving the son of an internationally-renowned Civil Rights leader?

Chicago Tribune Exclusive: Feds Taped Blagojevich: Adviser cooperated with corruption probe, sources say tinyurl.com/blagowatergate2-0

2). The Obama Administration: In the event Governor Blagojevich decides to pursue a self-appointment to the United States Senate as a golden parachute tactic to escape Illinois politics (i.e., Mike Madigan, Rezko, bad publicity, et al) – what impact does US Senator Blagojevich have upon the Obama Administration’s ability to separate Barack Obama from the toxicity of Obama’s past relationships (i.e., Antoin “Tony” Rezko, Nadhmi Auchi, et al)?

Did Gerould Kern (Chicago Tribune Editor) and John Chase (or anyone else from the Chicago Tribune) call and inform U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of the Chicago Tribune’s intentions to inform Team Blagojevich of existing wiretaps and the cooperation of John Wyma prior to doing so???

Stay tuned…..

God Bless America!

Eric,

I laughed out loud when I read your column A Whiff of Poultry. You have to understand that Tom Bennett is typical south side Irish. He takes himself far too seriously and he has all the phoney and ritualistic politeness of Eddie Haskell.

What kind of person writes that he is “politely” turning down your offer to comment?

I told him to be polite, don’t tell people you are being polite. And he has to cut out the obsequious bs with how he addresses people: “Mr. Zorn” and “respectfully, sir,” etc.

I’m not surprised that the U. S. Marshals have an issue with him.

Eric, I too am waiting to hear the straight story about what happened that they kicked him out.

But aside from the fact that Tom is a comical character who is obtuse with mannerisms and antics that are overly stiff and formal — he’s got a Forrest Gump gene somewhere — he is asking valid questions.

That is what I pay attention to more than the three ring circus. Tom has contributed to at least one of those rings. But I told him that you were right in what you wrote to him and he must explain in plain English what happened.

I know Tom since January 2010 as a result of an investigation into the $8MM TIF at 247 S. State that he quite assiduously conducted using FOIA requests and we published his study of that last year.

Of course, as I have gotten to know him, I’ve told him he needs to learn how to write and how to behave outside the South Side Beverly community. I also told him that I’m sick and tired of hearing that so and so went to Marist High School or is a part of some parish down there. The parochialism is unbearable.

Would love to go but I will be in Orlando at the InfoComm show. Not sure what happened but this show used to take place the first week in May. The show is a lot of fun. Tons of giveaways…its like going to disneyland at holloween. I am happy to discuss some of the industry items which you might find interesting. This can help you set up useful interviews. FYI, Al Gore is often on hand because of his cable channel Current. Then, of course, there is always the Brian Roberts (comcast president) press conference. I do encourage you to attend and behave as a traditional news person (sans the “schtick”). This is a serious trade show for an industry worth 10s of billions. It is not something put together by the ITA. It has been a number of years since it was in Chicago. Hopefully they find it to be successful and will come back. Good money for the city.

Hi, Ron,

I wanted to follow up on the email my colleague Ashley Dennison sent about the 2011 Cable Show taking place on June 14-16 at McCormick Place.

If you’re interested in attending, media registration for the show is available at 2011.thecableshow.com/Media/MediaRegistration. I would also be happy to coordinate an interview with a rep from NCTA if you’re interested in learning more about The Cable Show or writing a preview piece.

Thanks!
