[Editor's note: May here. I'm going to try to make the Hashable event at 5:30pm tonight so I better get showered and shaved -- and in honor of David Carman and Len Bland, get dressed.
This report is just letters and events. I have a whole back story on David Culver and the plastic tags, but that has to wait till next time. Short version: Culver could suffer from David Weinstein disease, i.e., Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) but without the bravado and bombast.
He's a very animated guy but not at all detail oriented. I would have been better off giving he plastic tags to Bob Bock or even Andy Nadler.
The whole story dates back to 6:20pm on February 16th when Melanie called me to tell me that she was in the ER at Stroger and then instead of getting dressed before the cab came, I talked to her, of course. When the call came in that the cab was downstairs, I grabbed by shirt, pants and jacket and high tailed it downstairs with my clothes in hand and went to the Syncubator at 322 S. Green Street. Getting dressed at the meeting got me banned (I hope not forever) but that resulted in Tom Bennett attending the BNC Venture Capital Group on April 5th as my proxy and I sat downstairs at 111 S. Wacker in the first floor restaurant. Tom came down after the meeting ended but without any cards. I asked him to go back upstairs to find the cards he had collected and he went back up to the 41st floor but could not find the cards. So, he came down with the plastic tags and dumped them in my blue bag. My thought was, OK, I can't go upstairs on my own and security won't let me up there, so I will get the tags back to Len Bland (Carman never even showed up for that meeting, btw.) I put the tags in a big mailing envelope and brought them to the MIT-EF meeting to give to David Culver since he usually attends Tech Pitch and he told me he would give them to Carman the next night (that would have been last Wednesday.) But Culver, being the ADD guy that he may be, forgot the tags and left them at the IBM Innovation Center. Oops!
It is a comedy of errors from the get-go with Melanie's gall bladder and call from the ER to blame for it all.
The chain of events in life is fascinating. How one thing leads to another and the leg bone's connected to the hip bone...
I am truly sorry that the whole thing happened and I do wish I'd gotten dressed before entering the room down at 322 S. Green. I also believe that there are other factors. I heard that my attendance at the BNC After Hours event last fall did not make me Mr. Popular. Also, as I explain to Ira Weiss below, some of the issue with the BNC Venture Capital Group could be connected to Affluence.org or even Malachi Leopold. I do have a job to do and although I have not asked Len directly about it, I wonder if he feels I am performing a service or a disservice (and to whom and for whom) by questioning some of the presenting firms. That is not clear to me.
Let me say one other thing. Context does matter and so much of this problem is tied to the closing of the Syncubator and the absence of Mike Rhodes. I do miss the guy. Quite aside from whether I will slit his throat or throw him under the proverbial bus, which as we all know I would do in an instant if the facts warrant it and maybe even if they don't, he was a friend to TMR and he facilitated much better relationships between the often scrappy Ron May and the tech community. So, Mike, here's to you man! Put simply, if Mike were around, this Carman/Bland thing would have been resolved by now.
Len Bland sent me an event notice for Tuesday, May 3rd, but I have not heard back from him yet on when he will have the third company lined up. So far, there are two firms presenting right now.
Inphodrive inphodrive.com//index.php - Synphony™ is an innovative voice-activated solution, which delivers audible web experience to the driver behind the wheel. Using his natural voice the driver can browse an informational news portal or select a streaming music channel of choice.
Asthma Signals www.asthmasignals.com/ is dedicated to preventing asthma attacks in children through a simple, personalized and family-oriented program using text messages and the web.
You can sign up here and when Len has the third firm lined up, I'll run the vent notice in full:

Melanie just copied me on this note that she sent to Len Bland. I know she means well, but I wonder if Len will want to take her up on her proposal.
Melanie, if Len has a hard enough time getting presenting firms to pay for coaching as it is, why would they pay to be put through the mill by me?

Len, don't feel bad. Ron calls me ten times a day, LOL! We are thinking of you and hope to be able to be helpful in some way to what you are doing. I'll try to be at BNC Capital Group next month. Maybe some of these companies that present at BNC Capital Group could of their own free will contact Ron for an interview as it would be good practice for them and help them to further prepare their pitches. Ron does after all ask good questions. They could arrange to meet with Ron outside of your groups and Ron could write anything he likes about them and get time with them all to himself to ask questions. They in turn get the practice and the press. I think something like this would be a win/win.
It could be like a right of passage to pass the Ron May test. It would be like going through training with Yoda to be a Jedi. Only the strong need apply.
Maybe Ron could charge for this? -Melanie

April 24, 2011
Nancy,
Happy Easter. Today is a good day for me to get some work done.
Your ad says “To make it even more interesting, we will rotate groups of people through each station in 10 minute intervals — like speed dating.”
I did not notice this rotation happening. Did I miss something?
BTW, where the heck is Bob Lepkowski? I would love to get his take on the shift from the Alumni Association to the Technology Review. This is a legitimate issue and the local chapter could and should have a comment on it. Since you and Ted and Bob Brill and others who are active did not go to MIT, it might be nice for someone who did and who knows the alumni officials to comment.
And I didn’t see MIT-EF board members and regulars Bob Brill, Jessica Lybeck, Dick Mulvihill, Bruce Montgomery, Richard Cross, Bill McDonald, Joe O’Malley, Tom Lemanski, Bill Burnett, Steve Swibel, Paul Fricke or Josh Kurutz on Tuesday at the fair-pair. They can’t all have been at Passover Seders.
Avery Cohen, Lanny Feder, Len Bland and Ray Markman were probably at Passover Seders and I heard that Sheldon had to leave early to get to one.
Spencer Maus was there but when was the last time we saw Nik Rokop?
At least we had the reappearance of Preston Urka. I also saw Praveen Gupta who has been an irregular attendee.
Whatever happened to Rachel Kaberon, Keith Waxelman, Rachel Patterson, Melissa Kauck, Paul Davidovich, Scott Oldach, Danny Fisher and a few others?
Another person who has disappeared is Sam Fallenbaum.
The good news is that Joel Berez shows up occasionally these days. But what happened to his former compadres Mona Pearl, Robert Jacobi, Todd Allen and others?
And it was good to see Steve Smith and his wife Nancy there, although they spend most of their time in Amsterdam these days and have sold their house in Chicago.
I would like to see a concerted effort here to get much greater attendance for May’s White Board Challenge.
Kevin Willer is now running the CEC and we should get him to show at the MIT-EF WBC next month. I’d be happy to call him.
If you guys could just get your own board and former board members to show up regularly, the attendance would be at least 10% higher.
BTW, your colleague Allison Black is great. She wheeled me downstairs to get a cab and it was raining pretty hard.

If one respects the privacy of others, then you can either tell a story in an unidentifiable way in order to illustrate a point without violating the person’s right to tell their own story or you can say so and so has an interesting story to tell, without telling the story. This assumes the person in question isn’t telling the story themselves publicly and it doesn’t apply to breaking criminal secrecy. Frank

Frank,
Years ago you gave me a rule for story telling that sounded quite logical and was useful, but I can’t recall the exact way it was put.
It was something like this:
You can either tell someone else’s story with no names mentioned or you can tell the story with the names but not tell whose story it is.
That sounds like it’s close but may not be exactly right. I sense I’m leaving something out.
What do you recall?

April 22, 2011
Ira,
Funny you should ask. Good Pesach, btw.
The short story of my ban is that when Melanie got sick and called me from the ER at Stroger Hospital, she called just after I had called for a cab to take me to Tech Pitch on February 16th and I wanted to get down there to see George Deeb who used to run a firm called iExplore. Anyway, the cab arrived but I was not dressed yet because I had spent ten minutes on the phone with Melanie, so fearing that I might miss the cab, I grabbed my pants, my shirt and my jacket and went downstairs to the cab.
I could not get dressed in the cab so I entered the 322 S. Green building and took my clothes into the meeting and got dressed there. I did have my t-shirt and boxer shorts on.
For reasons that are beyond me, this somehow upset or rattled Dave Carman.
Look, I know I fouled up here. And the ban is justified, but I just hope it is not permanent.
A lot of people thought it was humorous including Alex Zoghlin who wrote me a note saying that he was laughing hard.
But I could have dressed in the lobby, not in the actual room that the event was being held in.

Your entrance at the Sync Center tonight in your boxer shorts was a show stopper … you looked like a walking advertisement for Band-Aids! … but not for BVDs.
On a more relevent note, I talked with Adian from IfByPhone … sounds like they’re doing great and hiring. Worth getting an update on.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
So, since I missed your talk, which I did want to see, and I believe that you also spoke at Lean Start-up as well which I could not go to since I am banned from the ITA, can you please update me on any new things you had to say.
How many angels do you guys have now?
Total angel money invested is ____________?
Are you still using the students to do due diligence and screen deals?
Ira, do you personally have any issues associated with that approach?
At the MIT-EF on Tuesday night, I met Philip Aman whose card says he is an associate at HPA. What does that mean?
Also, is HPA participating in the equity deal that ChicagoBooth has with GrubHub?
Off the top of my head, I know R. H. Bailin, Jeff Carter, Sam Guren, you, and I am sure I’ve met a few others. But what about someone like Kevin Willer? Is he in HPA? He just took over at the CEC.
And Ira, the longer and more complicated story of my ban is that I have raised some thorny questions about Len Bland and his venture group which includes David Carman, Norm Fishman, Lee Sussman and Ray Markman. My issue is that Len is wearing too many hats in much the same way that Bill Weaver used to be criticized for all the hats he wore when he was operating his angel group. Len does not do due diligence as he has told me. And he does not ask presenters at his BNC Venture Capital Group meetings to present financials. This came up as an issue when www.affluence.org/login.php canceled its planned presentation. My investigation of these guys showed some big holes.
I asked Len directly if these questions were a factor in the ban and he did not deny it outright, but that is certainly not their open position.
Thanks for any info. you can provide.

Hi Ron! Please see the email I received from Brad Lazarus, and my reply to him.
I’m very happy that my email to TMR has already received a “hit” from your readership! Maybe this is an opportunity for disabled entrepreneurs in Chicagoland to find a voice?
Those of us with disabilities, you and I included, must find ways to keep fighting through the obstacles, health limitations, access to health insurance & other problems that do not be-devil others. It is never easy, but it is especially fulfilling when the brass ring is in hand! I have no regrets & some great stories to share.
Please don’t publish this one, but [information withheld upon request]…
I’m tied into the UIC since I sit on the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, and teach a bit at all the Chicago GSB, so we could network like crazy. I’m sure the press would tend to be very supportive. Folks like Lisa Gundry and Linda Darragh would be supportive.
This is interesting: www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/content/mar2010/sb20100318_710756.htm

Hi Brad, thank you for writing! Your email means a great deal to me.
By all means, please contact the focus group & spread the word. I think we disabled businessmen & women represent both an underrepresented, and underutilized, resource in the business community! Ron May is quite inspirational to me, I always enjoy interacting with him at events.
Maybe we should try to form a networking group in the Chicago area for disabled entrepreneurs? It would be helpful to all of us, since I can guarantee it would get excellent press coverage, which would raise awareness. I’d be very willing to participate in that effort.
You may read about me a bit in Lisa Gundry’s book “Entrepreneurship Strategy,” go to “search inside this book” for Constant Compliance, Inc. (page 298). Prof. Gundry was very kind to include us in her book, it was a return favor for speaking to one of her classes.

I have epilepsy, what disorder are you challenged with? I like to consider disabilities as a gift more than an obstacle, and we have to learn how to take advantage of what we have been given. I’ll enjoy sharing stories with you!

Hi Charles,
My name is Brad Lazarus and I want to thank you for your announcement in The Ron May Report. I will contact Kate to learn more and sign up, but I wanted to reach out to you in the meantime.
I was very inspired to learn about this focus group and I’m curious to know: are there any networking opportunities available for disabled entrepreneurs in Chicago? I think each and every one of these individuals has a fascinating story to tell and would certainly benefit from the support and encouragement of like-minded people.
Once in a while, I browse the web for opportunities to connect with people sharing my illness or entrepreneurs with disabilities, but I have yet to uncover a promising connection. I would love to hear what you think and would really appreciate any tips. Alternatively, if there is anything I can do to help you, please feel free to let me know.
Anyways, thank you again for bringing this focus group to my attention. I hope to hear from you soon.
Have a great weekend!
Brad

1g. David Culver: Why he is not a good person to “take notes” and his opinion of Ira Weiss’ presentation to Tech Pitch

Hi Ron,
I am the wrong person to take notes, like you need for a reporter to
write an article…I typically might write down a couple bullet points
for an entire 10 minute presentation since I see so many
presentations. I only usually write things that are new to me or have
a specific application relative to one of my companies or to helping
improve a presentation.
Ira did a great job with his interview, although a lot of the
questions ended up being about what was his view on Chicago as a
“Silicon Prairie” or Tech hub, etc. or about how were schools
preparing students for entrepreneurship (Tech mostly) or how can
Midwest universities work more with industry.
If I have ideas for the presenters, I usually just tell them those
suggestions right after the presentation. Would recommend that you
find someone who takes notes in detail about everything if you want
better details.
Have a super week!

Hi Ron,
Sorry David, Ron handed them to me and in the hurry to pack up with
all the stuff we had, I left the tags at the MITEF Fair Pair event, so
they probably got trashed.
I told David it was my bad Wed pm at the Tech Pitch and that you had

More complicit and incredible censorship via Chicago’s Mainstream Media related to all things Obama or Blagojevich.
As I pointed-out in an earlier email, Chicago’s Mainstream Media might as well start having their paychecks printed on Obama 2012 stationary as Chicago Media continues to act more as Political Operatives than Journalists.
Simply put, its beyond egregious when the Sun-Times does not even reference Antoin Tony Rezko or Federal Informant John Thomas (formerly Bernard Barton) in the context of the $1,000,000 Pay-to-Play Grant that went to a Baptist Lab School in the Loop.
Further, the State’s GOP should be ashamed of itself when it can’t even march out an organization or a talking-head to reinforce the relevance of the Blago-Rezko facilitated Pay-to-Play quid-pro-quo involved with the $1,000,000 Pay-to-Play Grant.

How state turned $1 mil. into $89K after Blagojevich funding ‘mistake’
BY DAVE MCKINNEY
Sun-Times Springfield Bureau Chief
dmckinney@suntimes.com
Last Modified: Apr 22, 2011 12:11AM
SPRINGFIELD – State efforts to recoup $1 million that impeached ex-Gov. Blagojevich said he errantly gave to Loop Lab School yielded Illinois taxpayers a paltry $89,000, Illinois Auditor General William Holland disclosed Thursday.
That finding, which triggered new questions about the role Gov. Quinn’s current chief of staff had in the Loop Lab School grant, was part of a broader analysis by Holland of how the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity did a poor job of keeping tabs on some of the $1.5 billion in grants it oversaw.
Some of those spending initiatives administered by the department, as well as other state agencies, have become focal points of an ongoing federal investigation into state grants secured by at least four state legislators, the Sun-Times reported earlier this month.
The $89,687 the state finally recovered in March closes the book on the Loop Lab School debacle, which stands as perhaps the most ill-conceived state expenditure from Blagojevich’s six scandal-tainted years in office.
“The Blagojevich legacy is living on,” said Rep. Jack Franks (D-Marengo), who pushed for an earlier Holland audit on the Loop Lab School grant.
Shortly after historic Pilgrim Baptist Church burned in early 2006 – as Blagojevich was immersed in a re-election bid and looking to strengthen his position with South Side voters – he immediately promised $1 million in state assistance toward rebuilding the iconic, South Side church.
But in 2008, the Sun-Times first reported that money instead went to Loop Lab School, which rented space from the church at the time of the fire. Blagojevich characterized that diversion as an “honest mistake” made by aides.
The school, which used the state money to buy space for a school in a high-rise at 318 W. Adams, was run by Chandra Gill, a one-time felon whom the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and others convinced Blagojevich to pardon in 2007. That step was necessary before state grant dollars could flow to her organization.
The state’s recovery of only 9 percent of the original grant to Gill’s organization – a process undertaken by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Attorney General Lisa Madigan – came despite the court-approved sale last January of the former school property for $750,000.
Most of the proceeds from that sale wound up being eaten up to pay off a portion of a $305,000 loan Loop Lab School took out from Republic Bank, along with $160,000 in unpaid condominium association assessments, nearly $80,000 to fix out-of-code construction undertaken by the school, a $43,219 federal tax lien and various city and county taxes, court documents show.
“We made every effort to recover the state’s money. But the bottom line is this grant should never have been given in the first place, and it’s yet another example of the toll former Gov. Blagojevich’s reckless actions have taken on the state,” Madigan spokeswoman Natalie Bauer said.
Bauer said Madigan’s office successfully negotiated down unpaid condominium assessments and the claim Republic Bank, as a mortgage holder, had sought from Loop Lab School’s assets. The bank wound up getting $50,000 from the sale proceeds.
“Unfortunately, due to a number of factors, including delays in the process caused by the grantee, expenses related to the property in this case mounted. As a result, the amount ultimately recovered was sharply reduced,” Mike Claffey, spokesman for the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said in a prepared statement that defended his agency’s “grants management and monitoring responsibilities.”
The 2006 grant agreement his department completed with Loop Lab School was signed by Jack Lavin, a one-time Blagojevich appointee who then headed the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and now is Gov. Quinn’s chief of staff.
Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) said the auditor general’s report showing how little the state wound up recovering from Blagojevich’s grant blunder necessitates answers from Lavin.
“It is a serious question that I think deserves an answer: Why were you willing to go ahead and authorize this $1 million with red flags flying everywhere?” Murphy said, referring to Lavin. “It was found to be an improper grant, and we get $89,000 off $1 million in taxpayer dollars. Can you explain yourself? I think it’s a reasonable thing for taxpayers to ask and frankly for the governor to ask.”
Quinn’s office did not immediately respond to Murphy’s questions about Lavin.

1k. Terry Willie: A solution to the problems of Congress
Subject: Please read and consider
Date: 4/22/2011 7:09:27 A.M. Central Daylight Time
From: terrywillie@comcast.net
Thanks for your consideration…something drastic has to change …this is
non-partisan!
I have totally cleaned this e-mail from all other names, sending it to you in
hopes you will keep it going and keep it clean. This is something I will fight
for and I hope you all read it all the way through. You will be glad you did.
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3
months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That
was in 1971…before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.
Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to
become the law of the land…all because of public pressure.
I’m asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on
their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the
message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.
Congressional Reform Act of 2011
1. Term Limits.
12 years only, one of the possible options below..
A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms
2. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when
they are out of office.
3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security
system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system,
and Congress participates with the American people.
4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will
rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same
health care system as the American people.
7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.
The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is
an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators,
so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three
days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.
THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!! If you agree with the above, pass it on. If
not, just delete

Ron:
I am breaking my rule to ignore you (which has clearly not worked), and responding to your most recent accusation.
This quick note is to set the record straight on Mr. Murphy’s false claims about a 10 year old business venture in which I was involved. I recognize that Mr. Murphy probably does not know who you are, or your agenda when you contacted him. Nonetheless, I don’t appreciate his joining in the slander.
For the record, Mr. Murphy was a qualified investor, represented by counsel, and a very active participant in the development of Desksurfer (a dot.com venture in the late 90′s). He had review of all financial records, all alpha and beta products.
After months in which Mr. Murphy failed to full and timely investment of his committed capital, and following more than a year of active development, the officers of the company (including me) resigned. We assigned all intellectual property rights and code over to Mr. Murphy, and wished him well.
I heard nothing more from Mr. Murphy until he was contacted by a disgruntled employee who alleged a bizarre and false story that Mr. Murphy had been duped by the management team of Desksurfer. There was no basis in fact.
Mr. Murphy was notified by our attorney 10 years ago, presented with the facts, and asked not to spread false allegations. We warned him then that the disgruntled employee had attempted extortion in Murphy’s name, and that he should disassociate.
After our attorney sent this letter, I heard nothing more from Mr. Murphy (despite occasional outreach on my part) for more than a decade, until now, as you muckrake for any allegation you can find against me, dredged up by this same, decade old, disgruntled employee and your own personal bias.
All of the history relating to Mr. Murphy’s investment is carefully documented and I would make available for anyone to review (including you, if you were inclined to get the facts right).
I have no doubt that Mr. Murphy is disgruntled, we all were at the time. But he would have been better served to speak to any of us over the past ten years, as we might have made a go at a happier resolution. I would still be happy to sit over a pint of beer and talk about what we both learned from that failed venture.
I categorically deny any improper dealings with Mr. Murphy or that ten year old business. I urge you (naively, I realize) to show restraint and not allow further false and defamatory accusations to be published in your report.

Correct, I’m saying TMR doesn’t cover those topics to my satisfaction. And, in fact, they are of greater interest to me than ever before.
Yes, there’s potential for abuse in state-funded ED programs, but frankly, I don’t give a damn about Kansas ones (or other states) no matter who’s running the ship. I have enough concern, interest, enthusiasm, and problems with our own city and state to keep me occupied.
Ron, we’ve been down this road before and nothing happened over the long term, which is exactly what many of us suspected would take place.
And remember, not only was I a long-time reader, I was also an occasional advertiser!

Raman,
First, I do appreciate the honest feedback.
Second, one report or even ten reports do not fully represent or constitute the longer term focus of the report which is the growth curve for high tech start-ups.
Are you saying in effect that Chicago tech start-ups or the growing mobile space is of little or no interest to you anymore?
Or are you saying that TMR does not cover those topics to your satisfaction?
Thornton is just the tip of the iceberg. Do you generally support state funded ED programs? Isn’t there enormous potential for abuse?
But I appreciate your vote. Good luck reading serious pubs. like Technori or Fly Over Geeks.
I do hate to lose long time readers.

He conceived the first portable cellular phone in 1973 and is cited in the Guinness Book of World Records for making the first cellular telephone call. He has been referred to as the father of portable cellular telephony and is recognized as an innovator in spectrum management.
