* Chris Rollyson’s 2011 predictions:

globalhumancapital.org/web-3-0-and-social-business%E2%80%942011-predictions-recommendations/

* I have been hearing for about a week now that Stephen Meade is back in Chicago, for how long I know not, but he might show up at the MIT-EF meeting tonight. For those who don’t know, Meade left town years ago and has been in southern California.I got an email stating that Meade wants to talk to me on Skype.

* There is much going on.

One firm, I believe The App House with Jeb Ory and the guy who attended the Funding Feeding Frenzy event on April 4th got $50K in angel funding for a premoney valuation of $500K which is 10% equity given up. Now they are seeking $500K for a pre-money valuation of $2-$3MM. The term sheet they are negotiating is with Lightbank and two of Eric’s and Brad’s minions. The guy I talked to told me that they are not as bossy as a lot of people think. I believe the guy I talked to was Kilton Hopkins, kilton@theapphouse.com.

Another firm at Tech Cocktail, Drink On, is trying to raise $500K for a pre-money valuation of $2MM to $5MM, more like $2MM if I had to bet on it.

I will have a full write-up for you on their preview event on the 4th. Melanie will get off her duff and have some other write-ups for you on Foursquare, etc.

Yes, it’s a short report, but I have to get down to MIT-EF and we have advertisers who want their ads run. :-)

Postmedia Network teams up with GeoPollster
Real-time political tool provides a snapshot of voters’ daily lives and party allegiances.

April 18, 2011 (TORONTO) – Postmedia Network Inc. announced that it is teaming up with GeoPollster, a real-time location-based polling provider, to offer Canadians a new way to have their say and support their political party of choice. The result of this collaboration is GeoPollster Canada: Part real-world election game, part mobile polling experiment, that launches this week, and uses the location-based site Foursquare – where people can ‘check-in’ to places on their mobile devices.

First launched on National Post’s website and then on canada.com‘s Decision Canada election site, the GeoPollster site today rolls out to all of Postmedia Network’s daily newspaper websites: Times Colonist (Victoria), The Vancouver Sun, The Province (Vancouver), the Calgary Herald, the Edmonton Journal, the Leader-Post (Regina), The StarPhoenix (Saskatoon), The Windsor Star, the Ottawa Citizen and The Gazette (Montreal).

“Most traditional polls are conducted by cold-calling random Canadians on landline telephones and can miss a growing demographic that relies more on mobile devices and social media to connect with each other and the world,” said Jonathan Harris, Regional Vice President, Postmedia Digital. “It got us thinking: What would polling data look like if anyone with a smartphone could answer ‘who will you be voting for?’ anytime and anywhere they wanted?”

Participating in GeoPollster is easy and fun to do, readers can sign in to the service with their Foursquare account and select which political party they currently support: The Liberals, Conservatives, New Democrats, Green or Bloc Québecois (this information is completely private and will never be displayed). Then, every time they check into a Foursquare venue anywhere in Canada, GeoPollster will count their check-in as a “vote” for that party. Votes are tallied in real-time to determine polling data for each venue and expressed on our live updating map.

Check-in votes help favourite political parties “seize control” of venues such as coffee shops and gyms, cities, provinces and perhaps even the country as a whole. As more check-in data comes in, a unique representation of Canada’s political landscape will begin to take shape on the explorable GeoPollster map.

Throughout the election campaign, our newsrooms will keep a close eye on GeoPollster check-ins and post updates as the dataset evolves. “We’re not sure what we’ll discover, but we’re excited to find out,” said Mr. Harris.

The Foursquare application also allows election polling to be taken one step further by providing a snapshot of voters’ daily lives and party allegiances. “One thing that makes this interesting, and one of my favourite parts of GeoPollster, is that we can actually track political sentiment by different categories,” said Adam Kraft, co-founder of GeoPollster.

“In the United States, pollsters tell us Republicans go to church more than the Democrats. But how do we really know that? With Foursquare, we can verify that they went to church. But in addition, we also know where, when, and how often.”

While the GeoPollster Canada experiment is more of a game than a scientifically accurate survey, it is also a mobile polling experiment. Voter sentiment data is real and informative. It will provide readers with a fun, casual way to support their party of choice, but also to learn more about the value of using location-based services to collect a wide range of mobile polling data.

About Postmedia Network:
Postmedia Network Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Postmedia Network Canada Corp., is the largest publisher by circulation of paid English-language daily newspapers in Canada, representing some of the country’s oldest and best known media brands. Reaching millions of Canadians every week, Postmedia Network engages readers and offers advertisers and marketers integrated solutions to effectively reach target audiences through a variety of print, online, digital, and mobile platforms.

About GeoPollster:
GeoPollster is a Chicago-based startup that builds election games on top of Foursquare. Users can sign up with their Foursquare account and choose their current political affiliation. GeoPollster monitors their check-ins to track political sentiment. By using a location-based service, GeoPollster is able add a geographic layer to traditional polling techniques. GeoPollster can track political sentiment by venue, category, city, region, and country.

GeoPollster was founded in Chicago in 2010 by brothers Adam and Jess Kraft. Adam, a web developer and political junkie, wanted to find a way address problems with traditional polling techniques by using new technologies. He also wanted to find a way to make elections fun and interesting by integrating gaming elements.

Ron,

This is not accurate. I reached out to Tom as I had heard that he had recently married and I had not spoken to him in about 4 years. I was also traveling through KC, but was unable to meet up with him. We spoke for about 30 minutes and he updated me on his personal life and gave me a quick overview of what he was doing at KBA. Sorry I do not have anything more for you.
