More on the Thornton resignation
Subject: Lawrence Journal World
Date: 4/15/2011 2:20:26 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: Name withheld although not requested
To: RONALDMAY@aol.com
This was in the Lawrence newspaper today. Do you really think he has “another employment opportunity”?
Wagle said she wanted to know how much Thornton’s severance package would cost taxpayers. In an interview with the Journal-World, Carlin said there was no severance package, and that pay to Thornton ended Friday. When asked why Thornton resigned, Carlin said he didn’t feel “comfortable” commenting on that. He said Thornton has another employment opportunity that may be announced later. Carlin said Thornton was in high demand. “I’m not surprised that somebody else is going to be wanting his services,” he said.
It was my understanding that as part of the succession plan, Jan Katterhenry, CFO/COO would assume the duties of the CEO should he leave. Instead, the board appointed David Vranicar. Could they possibly think that Katterhenry is part of the criminal investigation? I don’t think TVT could do much with the books if she wasn’t also involved. He couldn’t even keep his own checkbook balanced.
This is on KBA’s website about Vranicar.
As president of Heartland BioVentures, David Vranicar leads commercialization programs and investments for the Kansas Bioscience Authority. Mr. Vranicar possesses a wide range of corporate development and operations expertise, having led merger and acquisition; strategic alliance; corporate finance; and information technology functions at companies in the healthcare, telecom, and software industries.
Mr. Vranicar led the development of the initial comprehensive financial plan for the University of Kansas Cancer Center and earlier worked at Marion Laboratories on numerous product licensing, joint marketing, and business development initiatives. He was a member of the founding management team at Birch Telecom, where he was involved in large rounds of equity financing and led the company’s IT and billing functions that supported growth to $300 million in revenue in six years. Mr. Vranicar also has held executive positions in business development and operations at several other high growth software companies.
Mr. Vranicar earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in business from the University of Michigan.

Foursquare Day is April 16. Because it is the 4th month, and the 4-squared day! (4 /16)
We hope Foursquare Day encourages people to get out with friends and visit some of their favorite spots, as well as some new ones. Without the users checking in, Foursquare is pointless.

Titanic sinking to be tweeted in real-time
TheNextWeb
Friday April 15, 2011, Francis Tan
Today marks the 99th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the world’s largest passenger steamship that struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage. You’ll be able to follow the disaster unfold on Twitter – and it won’t be about the love story of Jack and Rose.
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is tweeting the vessel’s original wireless messages from that night, and in real-time starting at 11:55 ADT, the same hour the ship struck an iceberg. You can follow the Titanic event on Twitter using the hashtag #ns_mma.
Dan Conlin, the museum’s marine historian, was quoted saying:
“I think they’ll get a sense that when this disaster happened nobody knew it was going to happen. We all know what happened to Titanic, we all know how the story unfolded in great detail. Well, nobody knew in 1912, let alone those poor wireless operators in their isolated, little windswept huts. And as you get these isolated, fragmented messages you get a sense of how this thing is building.”
The Titanic was equipped with the most modern wireless technology available, which was crucial in saving survivors and communicating news of the sinking.
Titanic on Twitter, as it is called, is an experiment so the museum can prepare for the 100th anniversary of the sinking next year, said Conlin.

Built in Chicago
Promoting digital innovation in the world’s greatest city
A message to all members of Built in Chicago
During your daily routine this Friday, I would encourage you to make it a point to visit BuiltInChicago.org and check out all the great new things going on. Seyi Fabode posted this morning about 5 trendsetting companies in Chicago. And Una Pipic from the CEC has a great post about how long it takes to raise a round of funding and what impact does this time lapse have on entrepreneurs. And those are just in in the last 24 hours! Check out the other featured posts on the home page about the cost of a bad hire, a new group started by Jeff Judge for startup founders and the IVCA profile of Kevin Willer and Dave Tolmie.
Also be sure to help Maria Katris out from TiE Midwest. She is looking for some input on the who the top tech investors are in Chicago.
And of course, check out all these great events and if you have not already, invite your friends, colleagues and co-workers to join Built In Chicago. This invite tool makes it really easy. We should cross 3,000 registered members pretty soon!

dj magpie (maggie litgen) brings soulful, ethereal transmissions textured with bassful delights when she spins IDM, minimal techno, deep house, ambient, or whatever currently moves her spirit. magpie contributes something positive, something unique, and something distinctly female to her audible undertakings. she doesn’t trust djs who don’t dance nor dancers who wear uncomfortable shoes, and is a firm believer in the art of understanding full albums before playing a single track. a regular at various afterhours, diverse underground parties, gallery shows, and selective bars and lounges, magpie brings a discerning ear for texture and sounds, balancing her soulful heart with gorgeous ranges of berlin influences and icy IDM tendencies filtered through decidedly chicago-influenced presets. magpie relies upon her countless hours on the dance floors of the world when crafting her sets behind the decks, always remaining true to her very own moxie and unique interpretation of the world. you’ll find pretty sounds and complex beats to be a common element in her far-ranging sets, but don’t try to genre-cage this bird on the decks!

(MEETUP) We love electronic music, especially of the innovative sort. Techno, Electro, Tech-House, Dubstep, IDM, Minimal Techno, Ambient, Glitch-Hop, and the like are awesome.
We probably won’t be checking out very many traditional House events since this city is already overflowing with them. We also won’t be going to any industrial / EBM things. And you probably won’t find us at any concert featuring washed-up electronic acts from the 1990s. While noise and noisecore / breakcore have their merits we probably won’t hit up many of those types of events. And yeah, we won’t be going to Hip-Hop events. While it does have its innovative aspects, where ever you turn in this city you can find a show.
We like novelty in our sounds, and we like adventure. Many of us make electronic music ourselves or are DJs and want to connect with like-minded people to talk shop, share the latest and greatest new artist, album, or tracks, and hear some really awesome music. And, you know, dance.
This kind of edgy electronic music is a passion for us and we believe it’s important to support the underground Chicago scene. So come join us and let’s do it!

Twitvid DOES have the occasional performance problem. So maybe it is just a transient issue. If you continue to have problems, let me know and we’ll figure out a workaround.
Let’s try to touch base by phone in the next day or so. I saw your piece and it is pretty much as I had envisioned it. I think there is a real need for stuff written in a more acerbic style. Most stuff written in any industry these days is just crap. No character.
Your stuff reminds me kind of Hunter S. Thompson.

Ron,
Here is one more announcement from the Information Superglacier(TM) at the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster meeting fills the last remaining space at the Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center of Excellence (STC) of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany. The development means that there will (finally) mean that there will be a new groundbreaking on Campus Drive by 2013.
The one year saga to fill the space has taken several wild twists and turns. The initial commitment to the center from the original tenants was $5M each, but Moser Baer upped their contribution to $17M before the first groundbreaking. Care stream is a late entrant but a welcome new neighbor.
Sorry to hear of your recent plight, Melanie!

The announcement was made during the annual meeting of the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster (RRPC), held at CNSE’s STC and attended by more than 150 executives, entrepreneurs and investors representing over 80 optics, photonics and imaging companies in the Greater Rochester region.
Through the partnership, Carestream Health will conduct research and prototype development for some of its newest digital technologies at CNSE’s STC. The company will invest in new equipment and upgrades to the facility, and will lease more than 6,000 square feet of space, including 1,200 square feet of cleanroom space. The project will enable joint development programs with CNSE’s STC on a number of advanced technologies, and is expected to result in the creation of approximately 24 high-tech jobs by
CNSE’s STC over the next three years.
A global leader in medical and dental imaging systems, as well as healthcare IT solutions, Carestream Health has multiple offerings in radiography, mammography, dental and molecular imaging. The company has more than 7,400 employees in 150 countries around the world, including 1,200 employees in the Rochester area, with annual sales of $2.5 billion.
“We are very fortunate to have CNSE’s STC, with advanced capabilities and facilities, right in our own backyard,” said James E. Burns, Director, Advanced Development and Strategy, Carestream Health. “The availability of state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities in close proximity to outstanding technical resources led us to expand our presence in the STC here in Canandaigua. We look forward to working together as we develop tomorrow’s digital imaging technology.”
CNSE Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros said, “The UAlbany NanoCollege is delighted to welcome Carestream Health as the newest corporate partner on site at CNSE’s Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center of Excellence. This partnership will create high-tech jobs and drive new private investment in the Greater Rochester region while demonstrating the growing ability of nanotechnology to improve health care through innovative diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, and showcasing the advanced capabilities of CNSE’s STC to enable smart system technologies for the most critical and fastest-growing industries of the 21st century.”
CNSE Vice President for Disruptive Technologies and Executive Director of CNSE’s STC Paul Tolley said, “The location of Carestream Health at CNSE’s Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center of Excellence underscores our ability to support and enable rapid growth and emerging opportunities in the expanding marketplace for smart system technologies. This partnership will exploit the power of nanotechnology-enabled systems and devices to drive critical technologies while fueling economic growth that will benefit the region and state.”
CNSE’s STC has been integrated into CNSE in a partnership of two of New York’s Centers of Excellence, the result of a merger in September 2010. CNSE’s STC provides certified cleanroom space for fabrication and packaging of MEMS devices, and leverages CNSE’s $7 billion Albany NanoTech Complex, which features 80,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms equipped with leading-edge tools and stateof- the-art capabilities to accelerate 21st century nanotechnology innovations.
