– A long anonymous letter from a reader on the strange circumstances surrounding the death of James C. Tyree
[Editor's note: Ron May here. I will have no comment on this report now. The fact that I see fit to print it is by no means an endorsement of its content but it should speak for itself. TMR is a place now and always has been a comfortable place for those who see things a bit outside the traditional box. There are many unanswered questions. The wake is at Old St. Pat's Church at Adams and DesPlaines from noon until 7pm and then the funeral service will be held. I am going but I was told that the line for the wake may be two blocks long! So dress appropriately if you go since the weather is supposed to be lousy.
I have another report ready to go for later tonight which covers the Thursday meeting of the MCTA and the last one of the Daley era in which one of our most frequently mentioned characters made his first public reappearance. I'll also have for you a list of all the investments that Matt McCall made on the behalf of the City of Chicago with its venture fund and a few recent deals done by HPA mentioned by Ira Weiss in his talk to Lean Start-Up on Thursday evening 200 S. Wacker and I will have a history of the advisors to Mayor Daley on technology issues and the CIOs of the city under his tenure. I did not want to intermix the two reports so that one will go out about 5am.]

A long anonymous letter from a reader on the strange circumstances surrounding the death of James C. Tyree
Subject: Anonymous

From: Name withheld upon request
To: ronaldmay@aol.com
In the past three-weeks there has been an incredible amount of unprecedented local media scrutiny
involving the 2004 Homicide Investigation of David Koschman – a 5’5″-140lb 21-year old that was
violently-killed by Richard Joseph “R.J.” Vanecko – grandson of the late Mayor Richard J. Daley as well
as nephew of Mayor Richard M. Daley and Obama White House Chief of Staff William Daley.
Koschman died May 6, 2004, of brain injuries suffered when R.J. Vanecko – a then 6’3″ – 230lb 30-year old – slugged Koschman directly in the face sending Koschman reeling backward, and he cracked his head on the street on Division Street at Dearborn in the early morning hours of April 25, 2004.
The Chicago Police Department reports are available online for your review at:
www.suntimes.com/news/4247001-417/unanswered-questions-in-homicide-case-involving-daley-nephew.html
The purpose of this correspondence is not to provide play-by-play of the recent Sun-Times Investigative Reporting – as same Sun-Times investigative reporting has effectively positioned its “spotlight” to reveal the following information to the public:
1. R.J. Vanecko murdered David Koschman. Based upon the Sun-Times published findings – no one can legitimately refute that Vanecko is the prime suspect and perpetrator in the murder.
2. The Chicago Police Department obstructed justice in 2004 and again in 2011 exclusively based upon political considerations and cirsumstances.
3. Former Cook County State’s Attorney Richard Devine obstructed justice by not bring charges via Felony Review. In fact, Devine has gone on to further reinforce his obvious political loyalties and conflicts via his private practice representation of Robert Vanecko in the ongoing Federal Investigation of Vanecko & Allison Davis swindling of tens-of-millions-of-dollars in CPD Pension funds.
4. Current Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez is obstructing justice via destruction of the case file related to the Koschman homicide investigation.
5. The Cook County Grand Jury Room is obstructing justice via its refusal to impanel a Grand Jury to review the facts involved with the homicide case in order to evaluate the issuing of an indictment.
The purpose of this correspondence is to reveal to the public exclusively via TMR that certain, unreported events took place last week that “may” have contributed to the ‘untimely’ and highly-unusual ‘accidental’ death of James C. Tyree – by all accounts, a man of unquestionable integrity. Lastly, I will leave it to TMR readership to interpret the unreported events as to, perhaps, leading to Mr. Tyree’s ‘untimely’ and highly-unusual ‘accidental’ death.
Perhaps, same ‘untimely’ and highly-unusual ‘accidental’ death was just a mere coincidence that Mr. Tyree “accidently died” unexpectedly this past week, while Mr. Tyree’s reportedly favorite investment – The Chicago Sun-Times – was just beginning to unleash a major “pile-on” related to R. J. Vanecko’s murder of David Koschman.
Or perhaps, there is more to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Tyree’s sudden, accidental death?
Again, I will leave it to TMR readership to draw their own conclusions. However, nothing in the context of strange, accidental deaths surprises me in Chicago – the City of The Fix-Is-Always-In.
In advance of revealing select events that took place last week, TMR readership must understand the following:
1. Unprecedented and Untouchable: In the past 21+ years of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s tenure, we have never witnessed a local media-outlet approach an investigative story with such unrelenting-aggressiveness in which the Sun-Times investigative team of Chris Fusco, Tim Novak and Carol Marin have pursued the David Koschman murder.
It’s truly unprecedented investigative reporting in recent Chicago history as Richard M. Daley and his extended family have proved to be Untouchable.
Moreover, an investigative story with such “close-family-ties” to both Richard M. Daley and White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley has never been reported with the “tenacity” that’s been demonstrated to date by the same Sun-Times investigative reporting team. Beginning on March 1, 2011 – the 2004 David Koschman murder has been plastered on the front-page of the Sun-Times at least twice per week for the past three weeks. This consistent, front-page exposure for an investigative report might also be unprecedented, in terms or its corresponding timeline, as David Koshman’s 2004 murder has graced the front-page of the Sun-Times in over 30% of the Sun-Times issues since March 1, 2011 (see below-published dates).
2. Lone Wolf Media Coverage: Absent the coverage of the Chicago Sun-Times and NBC5, no other local media outlet has covered the recent developments in the David Koschman homicide investigation. Given the local media scrutiny in recent years of the Robert Sorich/City Hall hiring scandal, the City Hall Hired Truck scandal, the Patrick Daley/Robert Vanecko Municipal Sewer scandal, as well as several other investigative stories during the 21+ year reign of Richard M. Daley – the silence of other local media (i.e., Andy Shaw’s Better Government Association) in refusing to cover the David Koschman homicide is both deafening and profound.
3. James C. Tyree’s Passion for the Sun-Times: Its been widely reported in recent days via several obituaries that James C. Tyree, Chairman of Sun-Times Media Holdings, was a “hands-on and passionate investor” of Sun-Times. In fact, its been also reported that Mr. Tyree’s “favorite” deal was indeed the Sun-Times deal. To this end, Mr. Tyree was clearly involved in both discussion and evaluation of policy – presumably from an editorial perspective as well as business perspective. For further perspective that reinforces Mr. Tyree’s “hands-on” investment of the Sun-Times please review below-article as well as select excerpts from same article.
“There’s no question that Jim, because of his great enthusiasm and passion and commitment and financial resources for the company, saved it,” Halbreich said.
—
Rocky Wirtz said he first thought Mr. Tyree was “nuts” when he approached him at a hockey game about taking a stake in the struggling media company. “But he was so passionate about it,” Wirtz recalled in an interview Wednesday.
—
Sun-Times Media’s Halbreich said that although Mr. Tyree was involved in many investments over the years, “I have no hesitation telling you that I think we were his favorite, but that’s what newspapers do to people. They are special businesses, and Jim understood that, saw it, embraced it, supported it and the rest, as they say, is history.
—
“Is Jim replaceable? No,” Halbreich said. “He was the type of individual who, because of his enthusiasm, verve, passion, intellect, focus is just irreplaceable. But he was one investor – the most important one, but just one – and there are others who are equally committed.”
—
4. Anonymous Author’s personal experience of Intimidation via The Daley Machine: In order to responsibly disclose the bias of authorship, I will disclose to TMR readership that I have been subjected to incredibly-egregious intimidation tactics via various proxies of The Daley Machine. For the purposes of the following correspondence, I will withhold my personal recent experience as not to taint the disclosure of the unreported events that took place last week in advance of Mr. Tyree’s untimely, and accidental death.

On Monday, March 14, 2011, upon reading the latest Sun-Times investigative report related to the Vanecko/Koschman Homicide Investigation – I contacted Sun-Times reporter Chris Fusco via email to arrange a date and time to meet to inform same reporter of an “unreported realtionship conflict” within the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office that literally made me sick to my stomach.

As a brief aside, I presume you’re aware of the Vanecko Family’s unique standing with Dick Devine – as I understand Dick Devine and Meckler Bulger & Tilson have been representing RJ’s brother – Robert Vanecko – in matters related to the Federal Grand Jury re: Allison Davis/Vanecko sweetheart pension deals.

I ended-up meeting with Chris Fusco for close to an hour this past Tuesday (3/15/11) afternoon at a
Starbucks near the Chicago Sun-Times building. During our meeting Chris Fusco shared some very
relevant information with me that I found to be incredibly profound. Specifically, R.J. Vanecko’s
demonstrated track record of thug behavior goes back to the infamous 1992 Grand Beach Baseball Bat
incident at the Daley Summer Residence in Grand Beach, Michigan. I presume the majority of TMR
readership is familiar with Baseball Bat incident so I will not digress.
Upon my sharing with Chris Fusco the information that made me sick to my stomach, I wanted to
first “qualify” the nature, scope and agenda of the unprecedented Chicago Sun-Times investigative
journalism offensive on the Daley family visa vi the R. J. Vanecko/David Koschman homicide. As
soon as Chris Fusco informed me of the following – it sealed-the-deal as far as my concerns related to
my disclosure of unreported conflict in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office:
According to Chris Fusco, during the infamous 1992 Grand Beach Baseball Bat incident – there was a
more prevailing and telling crime that took place that effectively reinforces R.J. Vanecko’s thug
behavior. Moreover, the Chicago local media, as I recall, never effectively reported upon the following:
Pursuant to the Civil Case that was filed by some of the “Unarmed Local Yokel Grand Beach Party
Crashers” against the perpetrators involved with the Grand Beach case, R.J. Vanecko was handed a
fully-loaded shotgun by someone from the Daley Summer Residence. Upon receiving same loaded
shotgun, R.J. Vanecko began shoving, and pointing the loaded shotgun at the Local Yokels. As Local
Yokels backed-away from shotgun, one of the Local Yokels began absorbing several blows to the head
via Al Capone-style roundhouse swings via baseball bat from one of R.J. Vanecko’s friends.
The Local Yokels could do nothing to help their friend as R.J. Vanecko stood by with a loaded
shotgun pointed at them as R.J. Vanecko and Patrick Daley’s friend continued to take batting practice
with with a Local Yokel’s head.
Is the Grand Beach Baseball Bat (and Loaded-shotgun) incident relevant to David Koschman
homicide?
Only to the extent that it demonstrates that Richard Joesph Vanecko is a 6’3″, 230lb bully that “marks”
5’5″, 140lb midgets. On this note, the Public should be demanding Justice via The Grand Jury Room
at 26th & California.
Upon Chris Fusco sharing the above-Grand Beach Baseball Bat (and Loaded-shotgun) incident with
me, I asked Chris Fusco to walk back to Sun-Times building with me while I shared with Fusco the
“unreported conflict” within the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
As a condition of sharing same “unreported conflict” with Fusco, I demanded that Chris Fusco not
disclose my identity (or describe my knowledge of conflict) with anyone at Sun-Times – including, but
not limited to Tim Novak, Carol Marin or other Sun-Times reporters.
Please see below-emails exchanged between myself and Chris Fusco after our Tuesday (3/15) meeting.

Thank you for keeping my identity in confidence for the time being.
however, please inform Tim Novak and Carol Marin to please keep your “eye
-on-the-ball” related to the following – “Strike Three!” – metaphor:
Strike 1 >>> Chicago Police Department’s obvious political interference related to investigating the Koschman homicide.
Strike 2 >>> Felony Review’s political interference (per CCASA Darren O’Brien) for failing to bring charges. Given the fact that Dick Devine has been representing Robert Vanecko in the Allison Davis/CPD Pension Fund Federal Investigation – clearly, Dick Devine considered the Vanecko family to be a “sacred cow” during his tenure at CCSAO as Devine’s partner at Meckler Bulger Tilson Marick & Pearson LLP is Jim Knibbs – who supervised the Public Corruption and Financial Crimes Unit and served under Richard A. Devine. As an aside, Knibbs hails from Beverly. In fact, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Jim Knibbs Bio: www.mbtlaw.com/detail.php?Id=144
The 2nd Strike is clearly at the doorstep of both Dick Devine (and Bob Milan – xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). Devine has clearly demonstrated by way of his representation of Robert Vanecko that he has a favorable bias toward Vanecko’s – no obvious surprise given Devine’s political loyalties to both Richard J. Daley, and Richard M. Daley.
Strike 3 >>> Grand Jury XXXX: XXXX XXXXXX + Father William Vanecko friendship = Major, major, major, major Uber Conflict. I think any reasonable adult – irrespective of whether or not they’re an attorney – would come to the conclusion that absent a recusal of themselves from the Grand Jury XXXX re: Vanecko/Koschman matter its clearly political interference – whether intended or not.
Same recusal should presumably be documented going back to 2004 as XXXX XXXXX has served in same Grand Jury capacity since xxxxxxxxxxxx – xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Absent a recusal being documented – this Grand Jury Uber Conflict is extremely germane to delaying and potentially obstructing justice.
Keep up the good work and please keep me posted. I will do same.

If you, Tim Novak as well as Carol Marin feel that the “Grand Beach Perspective” is relevant to your continued coverage of the R.J. Vanecko/Koschman matter – I highly encourage you to contact XXXX XXXXXXX.
XXXX, a native of XXXXXXXXXXX, Indiana now living in XXXXXXXXXX (and working in XXXXXXX XXXXXX) is a fairly approachable guy.
He’s very accomplished in xxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx – in fact, we used to work together for a period of time at xxx xxxxxxxxxx – xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. In any event, XXXX informed me in Summer 2007 that he was a member of the “local” high school group that “crashed” Daley’s party.
Candidly – aside from your “play-by-play” of the RJ/Lawler/Patrick Daley fiasco – XXXX provided me with a very “disturbing” accounting/play-by-play of the events he personally witnessed re: the evening of the “baseball bat incident” as well as the “subsequent color” related to the “tremendous political interference” that took place with the local authorities in Michigan. The fact that R.J. Vanecko was pointing a Shotgun – irrespective of whether or not it was loaded – reinforces R.J.’s prevailing “thug” mentality – which, to be perfectly blunt, is very germane to the Koschman matter.
I’d appreciate if you do not mention my name to XXXX. For the time being, I’d prefer my identity remain confidential.

In conclusion, my agenda in sharing the above-information is to inform my fellow TMR readers of my
confidential Chris Fusco/Sun-Times disclosures is that I don’t know what to think about Chicago
anymore.
In recent years its appearing, at times, that My Kind of Town is losing more, and more of its “heart-
and-soul” via the cesspool of corruption that is very, very pervasive in Chicago politics and business.
James C. Tyree truly appeared to be the exception. Mr. Tyree truly appeared to be a “shining-light” in
an, at times, very shady and unprincipled city. Based upon what I’ve read in Mr. Tyree’s obituaries in
recent days – I can assure TMR readership that Mr. Tyree would have found my disclosure related to an
“unreported conflict” in Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to be highly-relevant, and very germane
to the Sun-Times continued investigation of the Vanecko/Koschman homicide – irrespective of the
moaning of various Daley Sacred Cows.
In fact, I would venture to say that Mr. Tyree, in a very diplomatic nature, would have informed the
various parties and proxies related to The Daley Machine to ‘go-pound-sand’ in the event same parties
and proxies attempted to run political interference on the Sun-Times’ reporting, as again, no other local
Chicago media have been reporting upon the Vanecko/Koschman homicide as aggressively as the Sun-
Times since March 1, 2011.
Mr. Tyree – a true and genuine Southside Irishman and Fighter – by way of Saint Barnabas, Marist High
School and Beverly Country Club Caddie Program would have certainly informed same Daley Machine
proxies – if pressed into a corner by same proxies – to go to hell, as Mr. Tyree has presumably always known
that an Irish fighter like himself would be welcomed with a ‘bear hug’ by good old Saint Peter at the
Pearly Gates of Heaven as Mr. Tyree has always been Paid-in-Full.
While I have lost a tremendous amount of faith in our local mainstream media, as well as our local and Federal Law Enforcement authorities (i.e., F.B.I. and Patrick Fitzgerald) – it is my hope that this correspondence to TMR readership will reinforce to the Sun-Times editorial and ownership interests –
Richard Price, President of Mesirow Financial; W. Rockwell “Rocky” Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks; real estate investors Andrew Agostini, Ed Heil and Ed Ross; entrepreneur Kevin Flynn; Mesirow Insurance executive Michael Mackey and Safeway Insurance Company executive William Parrillo; attorney Robert Parrillo; and Mesirow Vice Chairman Bruce Young – that they must continue to aggressively investigate, and report-upon the Vanecko/Koschman homicide matter until Justice is served.
Mr. Tyree’s legacy as a principled and thoughtful leader of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago’s
business community is at stake.
Question is….does the Sun-Times continue their full-court press related to the reporting of
the Vanecko/Koschman homicide as long as it takes?
Or does the Sun-Times – in a post-Jim Tyree era – go limping into a corner licking its wounds in fear of
the wrath of The Daley Machine?
Time will indeed tell.
Godspeed Jim Tyree. Godspeed.
Sláinte,
ANONYMOUS.
