NEW Lunch and Learn Series

“Specifying Your Customer”

Friday March 11, 11:30am – 1:00pm

As business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators we’re all interested in growing our customer base in order to increase revenues. It is common to spend a great deal of time and energy developing new tactics to generate awareness and attract and engage more customers (branding, marketing, messaging, web sites, social media and the list goes on).

The average entrepreneur assumes that if they were only to cast a broader net, if they were only able to reach more people then they’d surely close more deals. It sounds logical? But what if this naïve tactic produces the opposite effect, what if it was the wrong approach? Does a broad marketing approach really produce more customers? Does it produce the kind of customers they want? Is it worth the cost?

Although it seems counterintuitive, a specific and narrowly defined customer may be the answer you’ve been looking for. In this series, those with ambition will find a new approach that will produce not only the customers they seek, but it will also allow them to increase their revenues and eliminate the costs associated with a broad customer approach.

Mike Rhodes on what happened at The SYNC given to TMR before Crain’s, The Tribune and others followed by Ron’s version based on talking to Rhodes

Ron,

You have 12 hours to run with this. At noon tomorrow, Jean is blasting it out to our social media network and Dayna is blasting out on our newsletter.

Enjoy & we will see you on Monday at 3pm for our video interviews.

Family “SYNC”,

We were anticipating sending out this email on Monday, but “Sir Ed Domain” (www.flyovergeeks.com) scooped us so here it goes:
As of Tuesday MarchFIRST (thanks for the bent branding idea Ron May), the SYNC Tech Center will officially cease operating at 322 S Green. The magic, which is the SYNC, is not the walls @ 322 – we like to say it is the community, not the confines.
I am no fan of focusing on why this particular space didn’t work as planned. Suffice it to say that there were many reasons that “this space” failed. I take the lion’s share of the reasons that brought about the current situation. Some bad decisions were made that caused us to not launch the fund in a timely manner. That affected our ability to make the model work.
So what happens to the great old barn that was the SYNC? Well, it reverts back to the four walls and front door that it was. Some of the “office tenants” may remain. Others may move with us to a new space with a new energy that will be the new SYNC.
To say that we are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our loyal base of “syncsters” would be an understatement – we have received hundreds of emails, voice mails, texts and posts in support of the SYNC that was and will be. The technology and innovation community here in the Midwest is growing. The SYNC will continue to foster this growth.

Thank you all for your continued belief and support in the SYNC, Mike Rhodes
________________________________
Ron May here. Thanks, Mike Rhodes and Jean Pickering, for giving The May Report priority over the social network, over Crain’s Chicago Business and over The Chicago Tribune in this story.

I get that you are not happy with Ed Domain who in this case “out May-ed” The May Report, but Melanie is basically right. Had I heard the story first, I would have done exactly as Ed did, except as Melanie wrote, I would have called Mike for confirmation — something Ed did not do — and I would have reported whether I had gotten in touch with Mike and I would have printed any email I had a copy of, if I had it. Melanie tells me that Ed heard it from somewhere but there was no email sent out to the tenants of The Syncubator. I believe that Mike told me that too.

Ed and I are eye to eye on this one and not with Mike and Melanie. Melanie would have helped Mike from a communications point of view and would have essentially acted as a PR arm of his operation.

Forget that!

TMR is not a PR operation, but Melanie absolutely has the right to do and say as she sees fit. And I do appreciate the diversity of viewpoints between us. Good cop –bad cop, and I needn’t tell which one I am. You know, it is now six months as of Feb. 20th that Melanie came on board and we have made a good team. Of course, we don’t agree on everything, but that’s as it should be. Makes life interesting.

I will say this, Ed. Mike did not charge you rent. Talk about biting the hand that feeds — something I love to do. Mike feels that you screwed him up — his words, not mine.

When Mike and Jean and I spoke about 9:30pm tonight (Friday) he explained a few things.

First, his business model was three pronged:
1. Service provider partners or office renters
2. Desk renters
3. The Syncubator “economy” which includes the fund, the marketing pipelines, evangelism, cheer-leading, etc.

Now, the devil of course is in the details. This is just my impression, not based on specific things Rhodes said, but some of the current occupants are not “in sync” with Mike, I gathered. One woman got 22 leads in her pipeline from Mike; she made $20K, and I sensed that she is not going with him to the new space. Another person who may not be going is Tim Courtney and KeyLimeTie, I sensed. I think that Chris Pisano may be going with him.

So, one feature of the set up was a revenue sharing deal in which Mike added substantively to the business effectiveness of his partners.

Smart or not?

I need to know more on that to draw any conclusions and without the fund which is a key part of it, you have a lot of sweat equity.

And no one can deny that this guy put in sweat equity. The hours he put in. Reminds me of Green Acres.

Green Acres is the place to be.

Some people loved the chores as Mike did. Some were in love with the “stores” and Park Avenue. The Park Ave. folks probably did not see eye to eye with Mike.

++++++++++++++++++++++++
Green acres is the place for me.

Farm livin’ is the life for me.

Land spreadin’ out so far and wide.

Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

New York is where I’d rather stay.

I get allergic smelling hay.

I just adore a penthouse view.

Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

…The chores.

…The stores.

…Fresh air.

…Times Square

You are my wife.

Good bye, city life.

Green Acres we are there.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mike Rhodes is Eddie Albert here and some of the tenants and the landlord are Ava Gabor.

All Mike needs is four walls and a front door. Some others need “Times Square, the stores, and Park Avenue.”

Everyone agrees that the Sync space was great, very inviting and it had a comfy feel. I disagree with Mike somewhat here. It is about the community feeling and the energy, but the space does not hurt.

But Mike told me that he can get the same thing for $14 a square foot, not $22 a square foot which is what they were paying.

Now to the landlord who was your standard D-bag landlord, or so I hear. Mike was not expecting him to call his bluff. Mike said that there is no way he was expecting the landlord to play hardball.

But he should have figured on it since the landlord is bankrupt and since he has already shut down the 5th and 4th floors. This is now the third floor to get shut down.

Now, I don’t need a suit for defamation. Under Illinois law, one of the five categories of defamation per se is writing that someone is bankrupt and I went through that years ago with Network Associates. Mike said “bankrupt” but it could just be in financial distress and not technically bankrupt. So, please keep that in mind before filling suit, Mr. Landlord, whomever you are.

Some events may continue in the space, Mike said, but he will not be involved in them. And the current tenants are not being kicked out on Tuesday, but the desk renters will probably leave before then.

There are many event providers. Mike mentioned unGeeked e’lite and Heidi Massey as a regular event holder, but I don’t think her events are called unGeeked e’lite. .

This is a back story here for another day. The space was sublet from Krahl Construction and Krahl was subjected to an FBI raid fourteen months ago.

www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/09/krahl-construction-closes_n_417402.html

And I have heard that there is some connection to Marty Nesbitt and Penny Pritzker but I don’t know what it is.

And let me be clear. There is no accusation or guilt by association here, just because the names appear in the same paragraph or article! Got that? — Bob Geras, Terry Howerton, Paul May, Josh Metnick, and others who have issues with the juxtaposition of words in a paragraph. See Ludwig Wittgenstein, especially his seminal work, Philosophical Investigations.

The rental of the space started through Mike Rhodes’ good friend Jack Sandner. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Sandner

There is another building at 830 W. Jackson, a seven story building that may be tied to the same landlord.

I still don’t know the name of the owner of the building but here is a list of similar properties for lease:

www.loopnet.com/Listing/16365893/322-S-Green-Chic

And I hear that the leasing agent for the building was Aaron Zaretsky. www.urbaninnovations.com/Commercial_Team_AZaretsky.cfm

But I know not who he is or what role has played.
Here is a list of properties represented by Zaretsky

www.costar.com/costarconnect/MasterPage/main.aspx?SiteID=20977,72816&LogRedirect=1

Mike said that he has appointments next week from Monday through Thursday throughout the West and South Loop area.

Mike did clarify for me that Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell, while associates of his, do not have space in The Syncubator and he did say that they may have participation in the new space.

Mike also said that the folks at midVentures may participate in his fund and he said that they are in discussions about how else to work together.

My sense is that things are very fluid right now.

He also told me when we last spoke about 11pm that he has gotten a dozen or so emails from people saying “Don’t give the scoop to The May Report.”

BTW, I don’t know what it was, but Jean Pickering has noticeably warmed up to me since I was dressed much better Thursday evening. And she is functioning as Mike Rhodes’ media indispensable media advisor.

Ed Domain is clearly in the dog house as a result of Friday.

Ed, some unsolicited advice. If you try to be everybody’s buddy and then you turn on your supposed friends, they will hate you. My approach is much better. I make no bones about it. I have no friends to start or any time. :-)

Now Lundin wants to join TIH in a class action suit against me. :-)

BTW, correction. It is Greg Hinz, not Hines.

One more thing. Mike told me that he would have given me the scoop on Thursday night if my helper Carlos had not been so anxious to wheel me out of the office.

Sync Tech Center is Merely Changing Address- Corrections to Flyover Geeks Article and an Interview with Mike Rhodes Set the Record Straight

Mike Rhodes, Founder of Chicago’s Sync Tech Center, joked that a harpoon was his preferred weapon of choice to use in destroying Ed Domain, the reporter who leaked information earlier today in his article entitled, “SYNC Tech Center Closes,” published on the Flyover Geeks website which falsely claimed the Sync Tech Center was closing permanently. In fact, the Sync Tech Center is merely changing address after uncovering a sticky situation with a landlord and will be back up and running in 2 months or less. Mike Rhodes claims if Ed had asked for the real scoop he would have gotten it. Ed Domain’s article is unclear about his sources, but Rhodes was not one of them. Domain’s article was met with cold response from the community and outrage in how he’d knifed the Sync Tech Center, an organization with whom he interacted on a daily basis, in the back. In the comment section of the Flyover Geeks website Ed Domain claims an internal e-mail went out on Feb.25 to the people who worked at the Sync Tech Center but Mike Rhodes confirms this information is false and no e-mail was in fact sent. Domain was called out onto the carpet on his own website by a Sync Tech Center Employee who asked to see the supposed e-mail as they had not received it. Domain’s article goes on to mention the ITA, a competitor of the Sync Center, as an excellent place to work for entrepreneurs. Rhodes has no knowledge of Domain’s relationship with the ITA but imagines that it is, “friendly.” Rhodes thinks someone on the inside of Synch Center tipped off Domain inspiring his thoughtless write up which has led to hours of frustration for Rhodes and phone calls from both the Tribune and Crain’s Chicago Business. Prior to the publication of this article by Domain Rhodes says there were no arguments, no fights, and nothing indicating such a viscous attack was underway. Rhodes did not even so much as receive a phone call from Ed Domain regarding this content.

I know Mike Rhodes pretty well. He’s a guy who’s out to help Chicago and happened to run into a snag. If his landlord didn’t have the understandable stress caused by heavy financial strains, things might have worked out differently for the Green Street location. The statement made in Ed Domain’s article about the Sync Tech Center closing permanently is false. In speaking with Mike Rhodes late tonight I uncovered that Mike would have preferred to inform people about this on Monday via e-mail. He sent us a copy of the e-mail he will send to all those associated with his center which you can also read in this report. The decision to close the space at its current location came as a group decision between Mike, his partners and the landlord. Mike never thought this would happen and he figured he would work it out with his landlord. In fact, part of the Sync Tech Center’s long term plan was to buy the building at the 322 S. Green Street location and Mike had even been in touch with an executive from the West Coast Plug-n-Play Center just this week about that very possibility. The Sync Tech Center invested $270,000 into the Green Street location and will take that amount as a loss. The events scheduled to take place at the Sync Tech Center next month including Tech Pitch, UnGeeked, and monthly BNC events will find new homes and have the option to work with the landlord at the current location. Currently, most of the 8 offices and 12 who are renting desk spaces plan to move with Rhodes to the new space. The process for finding a new space is underway. Mike says they are looking in the South and West Loop areas for a space that has an open work force area 25,000 square feet in size that closely resembles their current location and is either a lofty office space or a warehouse space of some sort.

Mike Rhodes has raised a lot of money throughout his career and is still in the process of raising $5 Million dollars for his fund at the Sync Tech Center. This is going well and had nothing to do with the decision to move spaces. Rhodes remains confident he will build the right support to raise the money he seeks. He is looking for traditional capital including Angel and Venture Funding and he gave Eric Lefkofsky, Mike Ferro, Andy MacKenna, and the Hyde Park Angels as examples of the sort of people with whom he would like to meet to discuss further fundraising. He reports excellent talks underway with organizations such as Light Bank and Plug-n-Play.

Ed Domain claims he will have a more in depth story about the Sync Tech Center next week. Fat chance he will get anyone to speak with him after the stunt he pulled. Ed Domain used the space at the Sync Tech Center regularly but never paid for it. Rhodes was such a nice guy he was okay with this, however it seems unlikely this will continue to be the case. Ed, it helps sometimes to be nice to your friends.

Chicago: SYNC Tech Center Closes
posted by Edward Domain on Feb 25, 2011 in Chicago, Chicago startups, SYNC Tech Center, chicago tech news

Breaking News As of Tuesday, March 1st, the Chicago SYNC Technology Center at 322 S. Green is announcing it is closing permanently.
The SYNC center had quickly become a focal point for Chicago’s tech community in the West Loop neighborhood and had events hosted by Flyover Geeks, Funding Feeding Frenzy, MidVentures, and others. (Funding Feeding Frenzy’s Kickoff Event will be the last event held there)
The SYNC center was 18,000 square feet of space and opened as a place for tech companies large and small to work from and the operators planned on investing in local companies with a $5 million dollar fund.
The closing of the SYNC center will definitely affect the many entrepreneurs that gathered there and a few will have to find new space to work from.
What was a vibrant gathering space for the Chicago tech community has closed and that is a sad thing. The SYNC had a feel of community and bonhomie that will be missed.
Chicago has other, excellent places for entrepreneurs to work from such as the ITA. Here is to hoping the closing of the SYNC isn’t permanent and they do raise their investment fund.

*(editor) A longer, more in depth piece on the story of The SYNC will run next week

Really? Because I’m sitting in the Sync, and they’re still selling desks as of this week. I can’t help but say Citation Needed here.

Would you mind listing a source of this non-announcement? Any source?

Jonathan,

If you read the article it says in the first line, “As of Tuesday, March 1st….”

It is open today. Wednesday it won’t be.

An email went out today from the SYNC center to people.that worked there letting.them know. I suspect you don’t normally work there and therefore did not receive the email.

As I said at the end of the article, there will be a full story next week. I am not attacking the SYNC- I like the SYNC. That doesn’t change the fact that it is closing Tuesday, March 1st.

OK, so who’s your source? Because as of a few hours ago, there’s a crowd of people standing around discussing this, and let’s just say your facts are very much in dispute.

PS — I work at the sync. Haven’t gotten an email. Would love to see it. Perhaps you could post it? And who was it from?

Jonathan,

They are not selling desks. If you ask to rent one, you will be told they are closing. I am as unhappy about as everyone else. It was a great space for the community.

Hey there Beth, Hot off the presses I am about to publish an interview with Mike Rhodes on this very topic in tonight’s May Report. All of the events scheduled will either find new homes or have the option to stay in the current location and work with the landlord. Hope this helps. I have also cc’d Mike Rhodes and Jean Pickering on this so if they have anything additional they can say to help out they can also send it your way. They are not closing. Just changing location.

Rhodes had you fooled May, he is just another corrupt Chicago Businessman. Look at FreeDrive, myabui???? Give me a break, what a joke! The writing was on the wall even before they opened those doors. $3MM Fund then all of a sudden it’s a $5MM fund…. read the stories, the number changed out of the sky. They never had ANY money because of Rhodes, who is nothing but ponzie scheme wannabe.

Last I heard, he was begging around town for the funds. He never paid the rent and pocketed what money was invested, classic Chicago Crook.

Hi, You probably have had it verified, but this is my last day. As a Desk Renter ($400. in December, followed by $99. a month) it is more a inconvenience than a difficulty not to have a desk. What kept me coming back was the connections and the feeling of Can-Do attitude of the place. Mike Rhodes helped me focus my project on the return to Chicago, and it is heartbreaking to see it fail. It gave me a place to work and share, Downtown and allowed me to feel confident in bringing forth my project. I am grateful to Mike Rhodes and Chris Casey who really helped, and I guess I am in the market for a new desk space for Brendan Tripp and Myself, to finish our amazing Online School Software. Any suggestions.

I will always appreciate what Mike and his crew tried to do, and thank them sincerely for allowing me a opportunity to be part of it.

Blessings
Ed Hubbard

Hi Ron,

Nice to hear that Dr. Nancy Sullivan ( oops I meant Ms. Nancy; she wouldn’t be so insecure if she had a JD or a PhD, would she?) will be moderating the MITEF event. Some may think such coordination/caddying works sure suits her fine. Some wagging mouths have expressed concern that a director of an OTM has such an awfully light resume – no JD, no PhD, no licensing experience- just an executive MBA, not even a real MBA, last worked for a company no bigger than 7 people. But we are sure Nancy can put such unfounded doubts about her qualifications to rest by brilliantly answering questions on science and patent law. We are sure many in the audience too would want to put such doubts to rest and would come to the meeting well prepared with questions for Nancy, and Nancy and Jeremy Hollis( aka Jeremy Brown Noser) can thrill the audience with their knowledge of patent law and science. Would be really interesting – would it be recorded and broadcasted?
