[Editor's note: Ron May here. What a day! We are living in very exciting times. Where is our local social media elite on the situation in Egypt? I guess these folks have little or nothing to say.

I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that I participated in about fifty calls today.

Too many to mention now, but some included Bruce Montgomery and Darrin Stern on the MobileApEx show getting the plug pulled. Darrin did say that they tried to get HTC to be the lead sponsor and that they invested $100K on marketing (and that included attending a variety of shows like CTIA) so far before the German HQ decided to cut the losses. It is really sad because there were about twenty people locally who put in a lot of time and effort.

Fred was officially on the committee but he did not attend meetings much. He and Terry have never been able to get traction with Motorola and Darrin could not even get a meeting with MOTO but he did manage to get a half hour meeting with NAVTEQ in the last few weeks.

Russ Rockefeller of Toronto has some very interesting things to say about the guys at Affluence and he also dealt with Scott Mitchell but it was Profita who turned out to be the ball buster, he told me.

My investigation into UIC's OTM is just starting so the letters below skew things in favor of the current management, but trust me, the other shoe will drop.

You may notice that some of the emails today look different. That is because I am finally getting rid of the perennial problems caused by the rickety server that dates back to ANET days. It is a big pain for the guys at Expedient. Today, at my behest, Philip, the engineer in Pittsburgh helped my brother set up a gmail account for the mail. We have 1.5 gigs to move off the web interface and the gmail account holds 8 gigs. So we should be in good shape. Thanks, Paul and Philip and you know, I rarely say Thank You.

That legacy server was such a source of problems and it broke down every few days.

First thing Monday, more on all of this and that poseur Frank Gruber SXSW.

Channel 7 just reported that Groupon is pulling the controversial Tibet advertisement from the Super Bowl.

Kolenmesse, German based event planning company, backs out on sponsoring MobileAppEx trade show in Chicago

By: Melanie Adcock

It’s rare that as a reporter I get to write about news that not only am I a part of but have helped shape.

Last Thursday, Kolenmesse, the German based event planning company, informed the Steering Committee of the MobileAppEx trade show event that they are backing out of sponsoring the event scheduled to take place at McCormick Place June 11-12, 2011. They cited a skittish market and a lack of signed agreements from exhibitors. Despite verbal promises, verbal commitments and desire expressed by many to participate and sponsor this event at the time of this meeting last week there were no signed agreements. Kolenmesse plans to revisit the idea for having the same event in Chicago in 2012. The company estimates taking a loss in expenses in the neighborhood of $100,000 for backing out of the event.

Since May of 2010 MobileAppEx has been a project I’ve personally supported through attending committee meetings, obtaining and mentoring a team of 8 student interns to help promote the event, assisting with coordinating events that support the promotion of MobileAppEx, speaking to groups about the event, networking with business cards designed to promote the event and giving insight based on my extensive exhibit and event planning background and deep immersion in the mobile space in the city of Chicago.

It’s been my experience that when you have a failure of some sorts and learn from it the next experience is much better. The trick is to not give up.

I’ve spoken with Darrin Stern and Darrin has also spoken with Ron. Anyway, here is what Darrin Stern, the MobileAppEx Event coordinator, had to say about the matter in an e-mail to the MobileAppEx Committee: (Note, part of this e-mail is in draft form, but I don’t think he’ll mind if we run it as it is in fact well written and gets to the point)

Hello everyone,

I would like to take this opportunity to follow-up with every as a number of people were not able to attend the meeting last night. The meeting was relatively short, I had to announce the unreleased news that MobileAppEx will be postponed at this time (we have received no contracts to this point). I know this is a big email list but PLEASE keep this information between us for the time being.

The unofficial statement from my parent company will be as follows (ie this is a draft) “Due to the current economic environment and the limited support from the industry’s leading brands and players Koelnmesse, Inc. has decided to postpone the MobileAppEx Tradeshow and Conference. The continued poor economy has created an unanticipated and difficult dynamic for us as we launch a valuable event in the fast paced and ever changing mobile industry.

Koelnmesse, Inc. remains confident in the market place that MobileAppEx was staged to provide; market data and news media continue to confirm that businesses of all sizes are in need of mobile solutions for their operations, sales and marketing – now and in the future. “My team will remain committed to MobileAppEx as we will continue to communicate with key organizations about possible new show dates” stated Mette Petersen, President and Managing Director of Koelnmesse, Inc. Our event partner Connected World will continue as scheduled with their conference and exhibition. For additional information on Connected World, please visit http:// www.connectedworldmag.com/conference.

We would like to recognize and thank our supporting organizations, media partners and local volunteers. Without their support MobileAppEx would not have developed to this point. In the coming weeks we will work with these organizations and individuals to transition the submitted conference program suggestions towards a new format.

Our guideline is to offer industry events which are truly relevant for and supported by the industry. So please feel free to send us your comments and ideas any time.

We look forward to working with you in the near future!”

After we talk about this decision a number of people at the meeting ask, can’t we still do the conference as a local partnership? The answer is YES. We would love to see something like that and I would love to be a volunteer to the effort. We are going to wait to inform any of the companies, potential speakers, our supporting organizations and media partners until the individuals at last night’s meeting have a chance to think this over. I would encourage any of you to reach out to either Jeff from MOMO, Bruce, Melanie, Reuben or Uki as they were all there.

Once this leadership group confirms the interest to move forward I will support the possible partnering with the Connected world team and The Cable Show.

As promised attached is the conference program as submitted. I would ask you not to contact these people at this point. I would like to inform them first and then setup a smooth joint transition of the speakers and potential sponsors.

I know this is a long email and its late on Friday so please enjoy the weekend and I am here to answer any questions and to work with whomever if they is a team to work on this.

Let me know.

Klatuuu from The Day the Earth Stood Still speaks on the OTM at UIC

From: Klatuuu
Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2011 14:14:40 -0600
To: ron@themayreport.com

So you think you have a story on UIC? What you really have are some
disgruntled employees that dont like being held accountable and made
to work. They want cushy jobs that allow them to arrive between 9-10,
take pilates classes then go to lunch and leave at 330 (4 at the
latest). Being required to be present, produce results and play nice
with researchers were not on the radar screens of certain people and
working a full eight hour day was not the normal business practice.

The OTM has increased disclosures, licenses, and income for the campus
and now holds people accountable for their actions. The director has
high expectations and those that want to do well and work hard do so,
those that don’t criticize and create drama. There is a small faction
of people that don’t/didn’t get their way and are too cowardly to sign
their names to their claims.

There are incredible staff doing wonderful things that are not being
recognized in the OTM because a few bad apples/drama initiators
apparently have too much time on his/her/their hands. If they were
doing their jobs and working their hearts out for UIC they would be
too exhausted to do anything else.

If you are going to print the anonymous bashing, you have to print this too.

Hi Ron,

I’ve been enjoying your last few posts on the May Report regarding UIC.

I’m sure Brenda Russell wouldn’t say anything negative about Nancy Sullivan’s work or “leadership” at the UIC Office of Technology Management. Keep in mind that Brenda Russell was the head of the committee that hired her long time pal – Nancy Sullivan. I’m sure Nancy Sullivan continues to show Brenda Russell her gratitude in many ways.

In one of your older articles you ask “where did Kathy Liu end up?” Well, her networking pal, Nancy Sullivan, the current director of the UIC Office of Technology Management, hired Kathy as “Business Development Coordinator,” even with a hiring freeze at the University. Wonder how that happened?

Looking forward to more of your articles.

In December I assumed additional responsibilities for the business development efforts at the University’s properties in the Chicago Technology Park.

This includes the Research Center (www.research.uic.edu/techpark), a 56,000 sq ft wet lab incubator and a 70,000 sq ft building at 2242 West Harrison that is suitable for more mature companies.

The Chicago Technology Park (www.techpark.com)is a 56-acre research park adjacent to UIC’s west campus. There are 11 individual buildings in the CTP, see this map (www.imdc.org/contact-us/interactive-map-of-the-imd) which shows 6 research and non-profit entities and 5 commercial buildings.

The commercial buildings include:

Litholink, a company that graduated from the Research Center

Enterprise I and II, multi-tenant facilities manage by the Illinois Medical District Commission

Research Center and 2242 West Harrison, managed by UIC

There are currently 15 companies in the Research Center and listed on the Research Center website.

There are two new companies that move in this month:

Yaso Biotechnology, coming from Phoenix

CBT (Centre for Biomedical Testing), a UIC spin-off

Why Larry Schook’s appointment is important in that it expands the portfolio

Here is the press release:

www.uillinois.edu/our/news/2011/Feb02.InterimVP.cfm

This new position is a portfolio expansion and re-titling for the vice president for technology and economic development.

The importance is that the new VP-Research can work across all U of Illinois campuses to facilitate collaborative research opportunities, streamline related policies and procedures, and act as a “coherent, unified voice for U of I research” which currently totals $725 million-a-year in externally funded research enterprise.

Larry Schook’s quote in the press release provides perspective:

“It is a great honor to be asked by President Hogan to lead new efforts to coordinate the research enterprise across the university, in order to further enhance our competitiveness for external funding from foundations, the federal government, and other sources,” said Schook. “The University is well positioned to lead the nation in technology-based medicine and health care reform, addressing renewable energy needs, and ensuring human sustainability through nutrition, education, social programs, and arts and humanities.”

In late November, UIC hosted the NIH TRND (Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases) team, a new congressionally‐mandated effort to speed development of new drugs for rare and neglected diseases. It involves a collaboration between intramural (NIH) and extramural (a company or a university) labs with appropriate expertise.

Projects are identified through a solicitation and may come from a company or an academic institution and a variety of stages of development. The goal is to take the project to the phase needed for an external organization to adopt the project and take it through further clinical development.

This is a great opportunity for small companies as well as university labs to move their discoveries forward.

Indiana University’s Innovate Indiana Fund has invested in three firms: Aarden Pharmaceuticals, ApeX Therapeutics and Courseload

February 10, 2011

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana University’s Innovate Indiana Fund, designed to invest in emerging-technology startups that both propel IU discoveries toward the marketplace and stimulate Indiana’s economy, has completed investments in its first three companies, giving the $10 million fund a solid start.

The Indianapolis-based companies, with ties to researchers at the IU School of Medicine and the university’s exploration of digital delivery of educational resources, include Aarden Pharmaceuticals, ApeX Therapeutics and Courseload.

“The investments the Innovate Indiana Fund has made in these three early-stage technology companies in Indiana demonstrates the fund’s ability to provide the critical capital and valued connections to grow innovative high-tech companies,” said Bill Stephan, IU vice president for engagement. “It exemplifies IU’s commitment to enrich the state’s economy.”

The investments also mark a commitment IU’s economic development officials made to begin putting the venture capital fund promptly to work. The fund was announced in December 2009 by IU President Michael A. McRobbie with the expressed goal of beginning investments in 2010. Visit www.iufund.iu.edu for more information about the fund.

These first three companies have been remarkably successful at raising money from a variety of investors, including the Innovate Indiana Fund. The companies have raised more than $2 million in aggregate capital when totaling their entire first-round capital campaigns.

“The three companies we’ve invested in really stand out as promising enterprises because of their cutting-edge technology, potential for explosive growth, and ability to create sustainable high-skill employment,” said Ken Green, the IIF’s managing director.

More about the companies:

Aarden Pharmaceuticals, located in IU’s Emerging Technology Center in Indianapolis, is a small molecule drug discovery and development company that uses novel technology developed in the labs of IUSM researchers. Aarden’s cutting-edge technology will enable the company to make drugs for a previously un-druggable set of intracellular phosphatase (PTP) disease targets. Aarden’s initial programs are focused on infectious disease, cancer, metabolic and autoimmune conditions. For more information about the company, visit www.aardenpharma.com/.
ApeX Therapeutics, a joint startup between cancer researchers at IU and Purdue University, is a biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel pharmaceuticals for the treatment of pancreatic and brain cancers in addition to age-related macular degeneration. For more information about the company, visit apextherapeutics.com/.
Courseload, co-founded by an IU professor from the Kelley School of Business, is located in the Emerging Technology Center. This high-tech electronic media delivery company specializes in providing higher educational learning resources including textbooks, lectures and other forms of rich media through innovative collaborative Web and stand-alone software platforms. For more information about the company, visit www.courseload.com.
Funded solely from university and private donor sources, the Innovate Indiana Fund is unique in that it invests in technologies and companies — not other funds. It was created as a seed stage-focused venture capital fund that provides critical funding for IU-affiliated entrepreneurs. It provides these companies with additional business planning and development resources through the IU Research & Technology Corp. These include “pitch” preparation, introductions to various capital providers and commercial partners and access to business incubation and laboratory facilities.

For more information, contact Rebecca Carl at 317-321-1446 and rebcarl@indiana.edu. For more information about the Innovate Indiana Fund, visit www.iufund.iu.edu.

Groupon’s Superbowl: Social media (C)PR
BY FC EXPERT BLOGGER SIMON MAINWARINGToday
This blog is written by a member of our expert blogging community and expresses that expert’s views alone.

Much has been written about Groupon’s PR missteps at the Superbowl over the last two days. Their three ads (representing a $3 million ad buy) poked fun at celebrity-endorsed PSAs for endangered whales, the Brazilian rainforest, and Tibet. The ads were variously described as in bad taste or simply poor communications because they failed to mention that Groupon was matching people’s donations to these causes up to $100,000.

What the Groupon ads do offer, however, are useful lessons in a) effective communication in today’s social business marketplace; b) what happens when traditional and social media mentalities collide and; c) how well-intended cause marketing must be managed for a brand to resonate with consumers. Let’s take them one by one.

a) Clearly the audience for the Superbowl is enormous and varied but one thing today’s consumers share is a heightened awareness of global crises, causes and social issues thanks to information on the Internet shared in real time using social media. As such, there is a level of sophistication to consumer’s understanding of the challenges the world faces, and specific causes such as Tibet, the environment or the oceans. It is a dangerous tactic to poke fun at these issues even if your brand is the butt of the joke. At worst, such strategies are seen to put the brand’s desire for you to like them above the gravity of these causes. At best, the Groupon ads were inspired by good intentions but they weren’t clearly communicated, which means the ads were poorly executed.

b) As such, the Groupon campaign is a powerful demonstration of a traditional media mindset being applied to a social media marketplace. It demonstrated a failure to understand that effective communication now requires that a brand be the chief celebrant of a community rather than its celebrity. In this case, the awkward attempt at humor may be due in part to the expectation that these were to be “Superbowl ads.” As such, the humor overwhelmed the intent, leaving the commercials falling between the two stools.

This mistake is especially odd since Groupon is a daily deal platform that turns on collective action whose dynamics now drive much of the social media marketplace. As such, the driver of all communications should be their community. Plus Groupon understands very well how the marketplace has changed. The Superbowl is no longer the largest platform for a brand to talk about itself, but rather an amazing opportunity to amplify the needs, wants and hopes of a brand community.

c) Cause marketing by brands is on the rise for a very good reason — these universal values allow brands to be innately relevant and sharable within social media communities. But greater brand adoption does not make these issues any less sensitive, especially to customers. A brand must earn serious credentials within the social change space before it can confidently take license with the seriousness of cause issues. Even though Groupon’s roots are in social activism through The Point and now with G-Team Initiative, they miscalculated how to use cause marketing because the majority of the Superbowl audience knows little about them and even less about their meaningful cause efforts. It’s no surprise then that consumers mistook them as appropriating cause issues for the sake of humor in a way that left people shaking their heads.

So what does Groupon do? Andrew Mason, Groupon CEO, has written a blog post that aims to justify their strategy while also explaining their intentions. Such justification will have little effect after the fact and it’s tortuous logic to argue that at least the bad publicity has brought greater attention to these causes. But a clear statement of their true intentions is a great start. While he falls short of apologizing, Mason does state:

“The last thing we wanted was to offend our customers — it’s bad business and it’s not where our hearts are.”

Fair enough, and few doubt their good intentions. If nothing else, the campaign serves as a lesson in the perils of a headlong rush to create a “Superbowl ad campaign”, the distraction of being an e-commerce darling in a blooming IPO marketplace, and in the recognition that while causes make good marketing they are far more important than that.

Do you believe theGroupon campaign has been unfairly judged? How do you think they are handling the PR fallout?

Chicago is no longer a Second City when it comes to business start-ups.

Thanks to the success of Groupon, the fast-growing coupon seller based here, some of the spotlight has shifted away from Silicon Valley to Chicago, local entrepreneurs told RedEye.

These young up-and-comers said they prefer Chicago to start-up hotbeds such as San Francisco and New York City because office space and payroll are cheaper, talent is easier to find and keep, and top business schools at universities including Northwestern and the University of Chicago are nearby.

“There’s a lot of opportunity here that’s untapped,” said Craig Ulliott, 26, a Streeterville resident who in 2007 created the Facebook mapping application Where I’ve Been. More than 9.8 million maps showing where Facebook users have traveled have been produced. “It’s Midwestern values. People want to work hard.”

One local entrepreneurship professor said although this start-up boom in Chicago is not new, the city is getting more attention for it than before.

Chicago start-ups tend to be business-to-business ventures, which focus on transactions and services between companies, said Ellen Rudnick, executive director of the Michael P. Polsky
Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago.

Groupon, which in August was deemed by Forbes as “the fastest growing company ever,” sparked awareness because it is a successful business-to-consumer company, Rudnick said. Chicago start-ups, once popular only in the tech world, now have become recognized among regular consumers.

Started by Northwestern graduate Andrew Mason, 30, in 2008, Groupon now has 3,000 employees in 35 countries, according to news reports. The company also recently turned down a $6 billion bid from Google.

Groupon’s not the only local success story: Orbitz, the discount travel site; GrubHub, a food delivery service; and CouponCabin, a discount site, all got their start in Chicago.

“We have a good entrepreneurial ecosystem in Chicago,” Rudnick said. “What the Groupon thing did is raise the visibility for companies that have been here.”

The increased recognition has brought benefits. One of the problems Chicago entrepreneurs used to face was little access to funding. West Coast investors now are recognizing that
Chicago firms are worth the investment, Rudnick said, and they’re not requiring these companies to move to Silicon Valley.

Justyn Howard, creator of Sprout Social, which helps businesses manage and grow their social media presence, said he shopped his idea in Silicon Valley in 2009 but found it was more cost effective to set up in Chicago.

“Building the team in Chicago was not only more efficient,” said Howard, 31, of the South Loop. “Payroll and the competitive nature of the job market” were more manageable in Chicago compared with other tech cities.

RedEye talked to Howard and a few other young Chicago entrepreneurs about how they started their businesses and what advice they would give to other Chicagoans looking to break into the city’s expanding start-up market.

Company: Where I’ve Been, a Facebook application that allows users to post a map of places they’ve traveled

The Great Britain native formed Where I’ve Been nearly four years ago. He wanted a way to show his Facebook friends where he’s traveled, so he created a map of his journeys and posted it to his profile with a “get your own” map button. It was a hit with his friends. Since then, 9.8 million maps have been produced, Ulliott said.

Advice: “If [your idea] doesn’t work, fail very quickly and move on to the next thing,” Ulliott said.

A very timely article given the growth of the Chicago startup scene especially over the past year. These are some of the more successful companies that have paved the way for other startups such as CloudBot, FlyoverGeeks, PresentBee and many others. It’s nice to be part of the startup community and watch, first hand, how these companies grow from young darlings to serious companies. Congrats to all who were profiled.

Chicago Start-Up ShadowReports.com Reveals New Information About John Wayne Gacy Case

Hi Ron,

Hope you are doing well. I met you a few months ago at a Tech Cocktail event
held at John Barleycorn’s.

I’m contacting you regarding the launch of ShadowReports.com, a start-up
media site that publishes original investigative reports and unique feature
stories written by freelance contributors. Based in Chicago, ShadowReports
is committed to high-quality journalism and reporting that goes well beyond
the limited coverage provided by large newspapers, wire services and other
big news agencies.

ShadowReports first major investigation centers on the discovery of
explosive new information in the John Wayne Gacy case, which ranks No. 13 on
Time’s Top 25 Crimes of the 20th Century. Below is a news release on the
story.

Thanks for doing such a wonderful job of covering and promoting the Chicago
tech community.

Take care.

Start-Up Media Site ShadowReports.com Reveals New Information About John
Wayne Gacy Case

CHICAGO, IL–(February 8, 2011)

John Wayne Gacy.

Three words synonymous with evil.

Even 31 years after his conviction in Chicago for murdering 33 young men and
boys – most of whom were buried in a crawl space under his house – it’s a
case our nation will never forget.

And a case so gruesome and shocking, it ranks No. 13 on Time’s Top 25 Crimes
of the 20th Century.

But even after Gacy’s 1994 execution, the case is not closed in the minds of
many criminal experts who are convinced Gacy killed more than 33 people.

And over the years, investigators and amateur detectives have tried to
pinpoint the location of other Gacy victims without success.

But in a stunning development, new information – related to a controversial
1998 Chicago Police Department search for more Gacy victims – strongly
suggests that a location in a quiet Chicago family neighborhood is the
burial site for additional victims of America’s worst serial killer.

Time: 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Tonight: What will be a game changer for digital marketing in 2011?
Without question its video!

If you’re interested in online video and want to learn more about its
successful application as a branding tool I encourage you to attend this
meeting. This session promises an enlightening showcase of online video
innovation. Hope to see you there.

Online video is no longer experimental. It will be a necessary component to
any major persons/ companies brand’s online media strategy.

Over the last few years the online video space has been building great
momentum: consumers gaining broadband access, publishers responding with
more video content, advertisers testing the waters.

As video channels have been slowly growing and infrastructure has been
building in the background, the video space is finally reaching the point of
critical mass. We’re on the verge of that all important tipping point; video
is poised to explode in 2011 and here tonight are 3 very different
applications.

1)Video Advertising Charlotte Jackson

2) Video Email Doug Hart

3)Video Resumes Jackie Zahn

As budgets are being scrutinized more closely than ever, the beauty of video
is its measurability. It’s hard to quantify how many people actually saw
your 30 second spot and didn’t use the time to grab a snack or take a potty
break.

In stark contrast, the insights marketers can glean from this new breed of
video-based advertising are stretching the boundaries of what is
technologically possible. Emerging video platforms provide opportunities to
measure views, drop off points and customized interactions with your ad.
That all adds up to powerful insights that can fuel future strategy and
creative planning.

A video resume may just be the key to your next job. Still relatively new,
video resumes are now being used to land smart job seekers their “dream
job,” because the HR field is beginning to embrace online branding and the
use of new technology.

For example, recent research shows that 85 percent of recruiters and HR
professionals make positive and negative hiring decisions based upon a
candidate’s online reputation – good content equals positive decisions,
negative content equals candidate rejection.

Studies also show that 60 percent of hiring managers have shown high
interest in reviewing video resumes from possible candidates.

That’s because today’s society is extremely visual. We are used to growing
up with a television in front of us. We’re used to learning, getting
information, and being entertained visually. So why not take advantage of
this and use the same technology to land a job?

Video business cards will allow you to share a word of mouth advertisement
through the web with a video of you, your products, company, or resume to
your clients with an email signature. When you send emails using the
e-signature you have the possibility of generating extensive word of mouth
advertising as well as expanding your clientele.

Video business cards can be used for any business but especially businesses
driven by word of mouth advertising.

Field Representative

Charlotte Jackson is an independent representative for Matrix Media Digital
Advertising. She brings years of experience in sales and customer service
to her current position. Charlotte is motivated from a servant perspective.
Her passion and goal is to see communities prosper and grow and encourage
job creation by offering a low cost dedicated video advertising vehicle. The
rewards and dynamics of this program are exciting. For the business owner,
increase in customer base and development of supportive, relational
partnerships with other business owners. For the community, convenience and
awareness of products and services available locally. Together, lets turn
the I can’t into the I can and I will. Together, let’s keep the doors open.
