Artificial Intelligence v. Human Intelligence
February 15, 5:00 – 8:00 pm

It’s debate night at MIT Enterprise Forum Chicago

First it was John Henry against the steam engine, and then it was Big Blue vs. Jeopardy. Now it’s our own version of AI vs. HI.

Machines seem to get smarter more every day. But if the technology driving this is dependant upon humans, who is really smarter?

Our Debaters
* Kris Hammond, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University

* Valerie Pajak, Senior Manager, Business Intelligence & Analytics at APP Pharmaceuticals

They will try to convince the audience one way or the other. In the end, we will let the audience decide who presented the best argument.

Editor’s note, by Ron May

* Ron May is in full form, rarin’ to go.

I am juggling three major investigations.

1. Affluence.org and Momentum Capital with all the smoke and all the fire.

2. The Office of Technology Management at UIC under Nancy Sullivan and other UIC related stories. It is curious that I have not printed any notes yet, but already there is an anonymous note defending the management of the OTM and trashing the OTM employees. That will be printed to so hold on to your pants, Mr. Anonymous. Ironic that those who complain about complaints that are anonymous also use anonymity to fight back even before the first volley has been fired.

3. I am legally and ethically restrained from saying anything right now about the third topic.

Along with that, we have pisher stuff like Frank Gruber.

I’ll have a long report later tonight but I wanted to get this out so that you can get the ads for MIT-EF and the SEO class.

David Carman tells me that the vote was 12 to 8 to 2 last night at BNC Venture Capital Group. 35 to 40 in attendance. The firm that won with 12 votes has technology for spores, such as Anthrax, but the biggest use is for healthcare and things like MRSA. They got $8MM from NASA or the Department of Homeland Security. I’ll have more on this in the next report. BTW, Dave brought in this firm, and Len brought in the other two and they are out of NY, I think he said. The biggest market is in healthcare, he said.

Sadly, I could not attend because I was in a deposition, this time with Judith Meyers. That dep went from 1pm to 8pm and by that time it was too late to go. My dep was six hours last Friday; Dan the plaintiff’s dep was nine hours. These deps go on forever.

And the most dreaded statement made by lawyers from the point of view of the court reporter is “I have just one more question.” It is never just one more question. Court reporting is a really hard job. You have to record every uh-huh, every grunt, every groan, and at one point Judith demonstrated how my co-defendant Doreen S. placed her arms, crossed, so the lawyers had to say, “Let the record show that the deponent is crossing her arms.”

I have learned a lot in more than 25 hours of depositions.

Try this on for size. One of the consultants that Affluence.org stiffed was Reyne Haines.

Oh, and BTW, my goal at the start of the year was to lose 20 lbs. this year. Guess what, my weight this morning after dialysis, what is commonly called one’s dry weight (after fluid removal) was 247.9 lbs! Solidly below 250 lbs. And my hemoglobin was last measured at 12.7. A year ago at this time, it was 7.5 and I was on oxygen 24×7. Things are definitely looking up health-wise, that is.

Ron,

Just send me the details you sent in your email which I can’t find.

When did you work for Affluence, months and years?
** March 2009 – Dec 09

How much did they pay you? $0
How much do they owe you? ** I went on payroll in October at $10,000 a month and was to have stock shares, and expenses for an office, assistant, phone, etc.

What lousy excuse did they give you for not paying you?
** They played off each other (Doug and Mike) one saying I was on board in October, one saying December, I know when I sent in my employment agreement. I have copies of everything. I have copies of all of my emails sent to them starting back in March.

What first made you suspicious about them? ** I consult for a hedge fund…they warned me.
The delays made me suspect, the fact that what they posed to my fund to get them to invest was unrealistic…I had to pay for my own flight and hotel room to Chicago for meetings…

How many other consultants were not paid to your knowledge — other than Randy Shipley whom I know about already?
Pat Martin is the other one. I believe he invested $100K or perhaps more into the company. He is who brought me to them and he has been hung out like I have.

Whom did you mostly interact with? Mike Profita, Doug Stukel, someone else?
Mike, Pat and Doug.

What are they telling you now about payment?
** I no longer hear from them and havent since Dec 2009. I am going to sue.

Is there a wage action of some sort with the IL Dept of Labor pending or with some other agency?
** Randy says there is. I am in Houston, Tx so I am not aware of those details.

What is your area of expertise, technical or otherwise?
** Luxury goods. It was my job to bring on luxury goods advertisers and products. I blogged for their online magazine once if not twice weekly as well. I was to host their online marketplace, vet consignments by members, handle appraisals, etc.

You can reach me at [phone number withheld although not requested.]
Sincerely,

Reyne Haines
