Why listen to customers? A living case study by Jerry R. Mitchell: Co-located with the MEF Semi-Annual networking party: December 6, 2010

During this fascinating case study in action you’ll see the tactics that Jerry Mitchell has used to shrink his organization from more than 300 to a handful of members in one short decade. Jerry’s mandates that new customers are bad and old customers are even worse will be on full display during this event. Some of the takeaways include:

** Customers don’t know anything about your business, what value can they possibly have?

** If customers don’t like what you’re selling they’re clearly too dense or ignorant to bother with.

** Why innovate and change? If your current customers don’t get it, it’s their problem.

** You know your business best, so the heck with anyone else’s ideas.

Careful adherence to these principles and tactics will ensure that your organization or business will follow the same path as Jerry’s — a testament to the success of this approach can be found in his recent MEF meeting downtown in November — 186 seats were in the auditorium and 5 were filled.

Register today: space is unlimited!
www.MidwestEntrepreneursForum.Org/CalendarEvents.aspx

Monday we’ll tell you who will and who won’t be there and Tuesday, we’ll tell you about the All Mobile party going on at the same time! The betting in Vegas as of today is that attendance will be below 65 which would be thirteen times the attendance at the November downtown meeting.

SoleSearch- Exciting Shoe App is getting Traction

A Mobile App called SoleSearch sole-search.net is really going places. It was created here in Chicago to help sneaker heads find cool shoe stores across the globe and it’s poised to take off in a major way. Currently they have an iPhone App that is out now that you can download here: bit.ly/fpIbOI By Mid-December they will have an Android App as well which is being built as we speak by the design wizards over at Applitite. www.applitite.com/ In January 2011, SoleSearch will present their business model at TechPitch, ask for feedback and funding to promote SoleSearch. They are currently practicing their presentation and seeking any advice on what will make them successful.

A few weeks ago I spoke with D.J. “The Medicine” Grant and Brandon Williamson, creators of the SoleSearch App. They took me shoe shopping at Akin sneaker store near Halsted and Roosevelt. Karlie Hanson, Assistant Manager at Akin, one of only two Nike Branded shoe stores in Chicago located at 1313 South Halsted in Chicago, explained to me the retro and re-mix styles for both sports and lifestyle shoes that are highly sought after. He said the SoleSearch App brings a lot of traffic into their store they would not have had otherwise from people who are looking for stores where they can find great shoes. You can watch the video I took at the Akin store with Brandon and D.J. here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IVaM5F404Y The Sole SearchApp is a world wide application that is used in Australia, South Africa, Europe and many other locations. Here is a video of the fun shoes I bought! www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrGqT79ln6M

Brandon and D.J. are high energy entrepreneurs who love shoes. They wear cool necklaces with pink flamingos to help break the ice when networking and it makes their presence unmistakable. The energy, drive and work ethic of SoleSearch is in a position to win hearts of not only their target market of sneaker fans age 12-21 but potential investors in the business world. Their upcoming presentation at Tech Pitch is going to kick their business up a notch. They’ve been putting together some ideas for events and fundraisers all of which sound like great fun. I can’t wait to see what they do next. To receive updates about the January Tech Pitch event please visit the event calendar here www.bnchicago.com or check here at The May Report for future announcements.

Dear Mr. Feldman -

I am very flattered and honored to have seen Jay Goltz’s article “Doing the Math on a Groupon Deal” in the New York Times “You’re the Boss” as it is highly similar in its argument to that made by me in “Groupon: Goldmine, Tar pit, or Niche Solution”, back in October. (Albeit, with some minor changes in the numbers.)

Briefly noted, by Ron May

* Cat is putting out a $1B bond and SAP has to pay Oracle $1.3B for stealing Oracle software. Does anything happen these days for less than $1B? Groupon to go for $3.1B, etc. I have gotten some pushback for printing that rumor, btw. And one person who knows the Keywell/Lefkofsky history and all its sordid details well, tells me that a year after the purchase — if it happens — Google will probably have to re-do its accounting numbers since it’s based on a house of cards.

* Steve Szayevicz (just pronounce it Chevas — as in Rigal) who used to be essentially the VP of Business Development for the Reproductive Genetics Institute on Halsted in Chicago called me yesterday. When he gets back in town on Monday, he will fill us in on the whole megillah. Sadly, the founder Dr. Yury Verlinsky died in July 2009 and RGI has gotten out of the stem cell business. Steve will give us the full story.

www.reproductivegenetics.com/aboutus.html

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Reproductive Genetics Institute was established in 1990 by our scientific director and CEO, Dr. Yury Verlinsky, who passed away in July of 2009. Dr. Verlinksy was known worldwide as an expert in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), for pioneering the polar body biopsy and the removal technology that is widely used during PGD today. Dr. Verlinsky and the staff at RGI published the first cases of PGD using the polar body biopsy technique in order to test for genetic disease. Since the first attempts at PGD in 1990, our team has published numerous articles summarizing the work that we have performed. Please click here to review our scientific publications.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

* Hilary Marsh showed up at The Bagel for carry-out on Tuesday about 12:15pm where I was eating lunch.

Hilary has been in charge of content for the National Association of Realtors for five years now. They have 1.1 million members and as Hilary explained, realtors are very outgoing people and are always on the run. Hence, the association uses social media to the hilt. Much of it is location based, Hilary says, and FourSquare is a big part of it, along with Twitter and Facebook of course. Hilary used to have her own content consulting business and she often put on seminars.

The NAR provides data for realtors such as housing purchase data and economic analysis.

Hilary does not look 51, but she is and she has two kids, a son who is 23 and a daughter who is 21 and they were with her.Her daughter is a psychology major and her son just graduated and is interested in politics.

* The CEO and founder of www.tipsolutionsinc.com is John Braun (I found his card in my stack from the BNC Tech Pitch) and he will be in the Shark Cage at Dave Culver’s Funding Feeding Frenzy on December 8th along with about 18 or 19 other firms, Culver told me this afternoon. John Braun is seeking to raise $1.5MM in this round.

Culver expects to see at least twelve investors, four for each of the buckets, unlike the five in their literature:

GUPPY BOWL – For young companies looking for less than $250,000 in seed money. Investors can provide access to all the resources a startup needs.

PIRANHA POND – For companies that have already secured seed capital and need between $250,000 and $1.5MM to grow. The connections made here may also help expand existing sales and distribution channels.

GREAT WHITE SHARK CAGE – For companies seeking Millions of dollars. Connect with the biggest fish in your industry.

Each company will pitch to a panel of five investors (including angel investors, private equity investors and venture capitalist ) whose investing interests match the company’s profile. The Funding Feeding Frenzy is the ideal opportunity to snag investors who are ready to back growing companies such as your own.

* And now for some disconcerting news. Bill Anthony went over to The Sync today (Wednesday) and ran into a guy named Terry who was there last Friday. Terry was leaving as Bill got there and he told Bill that everyone was gone and that Mike Rhodes is in the hospital sick. Mike had suggested that they would have pizza today starting at noon, but t’was not to be. We are trying to reach Mike or his wife (I think he lives in Tinley Park). We hope that Mike is OK and that it is not serious.

* I need to talk to a few real experts (no, no, not DD) on search and data conversions, etc. I asked our web developer Robbie Abed to write this. Please call me at 773-525-3944 or email me at ronaldmay@aol.com.

Houston, we have a problem.

Robbie Abed wrote this at my request to describe the nature of the conundrum The May Report finds itself in with respect to setting up a new website.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Background:

Ron currently has two existing sites: tmronline.com & themayreport.com. Both domains point to the same site files, and all of the links on both sites point to tmronline.com. So all of the files are only hosted on one server, but you have two ways to get the same exact site essentially (tmronline.com & themayreport.com). So when he posts an article on the website, you can access them via both URL’s immediately.

Ron is building a new and improved website, and all of the old data has been converted from the old site (which was stored in a lotus notes db) into a more friendly wordpress database.

Here is the information we can get from the lotus notes db: Date Published, Title of Article, Body content. We do not have access to the corresponding URL on the website (for whatever reasons). So when we converted the data into wordpress, all of the articles created new URL’s without the ability to link back to the original URL (because the source data didn’t have a corresponding URL for each “newsletter” entry).

The problem:

If we went live with one website that has all of the converted newsletters on a WordPress platform, and completely removed the existing website – existing links (on the internet) to a specific newsletter on the site would be broken.

Example: Ron posts the article on his facebook page:

www.tmronline.com/A55951/tmrarticles.nsf/e17dd6a94826afb….2862577b900624658!OpenDocument

[Robbie, the document was so long it would foul up the formatting of the report so I had to apply the Tiny URL to it: tinyurl.com/2acewn6 ]

we would only be able to point the user back to the main site URL, but not to the exact article because we were not able to link them. Ideally, if we had the information we would do a 301 redirect to the new page so no “SEO Credit” has been lost. All backlinks would still count, but unfortunately we don’t have that luxury. Here are the two possible solution’s along with the issues.

Possible Solution 1

* Keep the old site up, launch new site. Old site would contain all archived newsletters to a certain date, and the new site will host all of the new articles going forward. We would also place a link on the old site letting the users now that the most current newsletters are on URL X.
* Issues:
* There are now two websites for Ronald May’s newsletters. One for the old, One for the new.
* Searchability within the site is impaired because each search would only contain context up to a certain date
* possibility of a workaround using google custom search engine for searching two sites within one search box
* Google site traffic will now be split between sites, instead of getting all of your data on one site.

Possible Solution 2

* Replace old website with new website and all converted data.
* Issues:
* Existing links to specific newsletters on the web will now be broken since there is no way to match an old newsletter on the website to the new newsletter.
* An option is to manually match each new newsletter post with an old newsletter post, but there is 15,000 posts. If there were 25 posts, we wouldn’t be having this issue.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

* I watched the movie 12 Angry Men again last night between 1am and 3am. Henry Fonda produced it and starred in it. According to Robert Osborn of Turner Movie Classics, it was one of Fonda’s three favorite movies that he played in: The Grapes of Wrath, The Ox Bow Incident, and 12 Angry Men.

Fonda produced 12 Angry Men at his own expense and it was a flop at the theaters so he never produced another movie after that. He paid $350K to produce it. He hired Sidney Lumet to direct it and Lumet had been only on TV until then but it did launch Lumet on his film directing career. One of the things that made the movie so good was that they had hundreds of camera locations.

And an all-star cast did not hurt. None of the jurors had names used in the film. Only at the end when Joe Sweeney says hi to Henry Fonda do you hear any names and then only last names.

THE AGRAWAL FIRM, LLC-SERVING YOUR EVERY DAY LEGAL NEEDS

HOW TO WIN AT TRIAL

by Rishi Agrawal*

Thank you to the warm greetings and well wishes that many of you passed on to me after my email last month. I look forward to sharing short, but hopefully helpful bits of advice this month and many months to come.

The key in prevailing at trial is to control the message – be the director of the story that is being told. In bench trials, it is the judge that makes the final ruling and therefore the key to victory rests more in the law and the facts. A good attorney will have some insight into what the judge is finding persuasive and hammer those points home. The attorney should also advise the client to request a jury trial if there is a concern that the judge may not rule in your favor and your chances would be better with the common sense and emotional approach of a jury.

In jury trials, the prosecutor/plaintiff’s attorney always goes first with their opening statements, witnesses and closings, followed by the defense. This results in a back and forth struggle in controlling the story and getting the jury’s focus and attention. The key is to find a way to force the other party to address the facts and part of the story that are at the heart of your case. This way, even when the other party is arguing against your points, the jury is still at least focused on those issues that are the strengths of your case, issues that after the story is fully told, you feel confident that the jury will rule in your favor. Connect with the jury, tell your story – you may be surprised at how positive of a verdict you get.

Ron, can you please promote the subject event until the day of the event. We have an all-star program put together and we need to get the word out to Chicago’s innovation community. Appreciate all your help. If there are any sponsors interested in exhibiting at the event, they can contact me directly. Enjoy your thanksgiving.

“Innovating” Chicagoland’s Workforce:

How Innovators Compete in the Post-Recession Global Economy

As signs of recovery are evident from the “Great Recession,” many companies are recognizing they need to re-energize their product innovation efforts to be competitive. Chicago PDMA and DePaul University’s Center for Creativity and Innovation present a panel of leading experts from industry and academia to explore the latest insights on how innovative companies are structuring and staffing their company’s NPD efforts to leapfrog the competition, grow market share, and prepare the next generation of innovators.

Key Points to be addressed:

· How can companies grow, foster, and inspire super-powered innovation teams?

· What skill-set best defines the NPD or innovation professional?

· Which innovation skills are most desirable by companies in today’s marketplace?

· How can individuals best prepare for a career as a NPD professional?

· What programs are universities offering in response to the call to “innovate” the workforce?

Local universities and other exhibitors will be on hand to discuss one-on-one about NPD careers or degrees and certificate programs available. If new product development is your “thing” you do not want to miss this program — It’s your career – It’s your year!

Perhaps next time though, could I get some credit, a link, or other form of recognition? Or, is this normal practice?

+++++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++++++++++++++

* Issues:

* Issues:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
