[Editor's note: Ron May here. First, I have had several people complain that
they did not get yesterday;s report. I have been in contact with Exact Target
on this and hope to get a better understanding of why some reports are not
being delivered. I keep telling them that my next call or email is to Scott
Dorsey, the CEO. And they know I mean it. If Scott can get $70MM in VC money,
he can make his customers happy. The undelivered mail not all listed on the
soft bounce list. Some regular readers like Matt McCall are not getting it and
that makes me mad. Here is yesterday's report: tinyurl.com/266cpp4

I owe you an update on my never ending health ordeal, just hitting five months
now, but not today. I am quite doped up. They decided to use a general
anesthetic on me this morning for an ERCP to remove a stent in my biliary
track. The last time they went in on this, when they removed three stents on
March 25th, while I was in the hospital at Masonic, the anesthesia guy barely
used any anesthetic and it felt like Dr. Maitar was using a jack hammer. Well,
today they went to the other extreme, using a general when I thought they would
just use a light level of versed.
sleep.emedtv.com/sleep/versed-with-anesthesia.html

Anyway the short version of the story is that we have made big progress on
several fronts. The abscess has been removed, and the other more embedded one
is being treated with IV antibiotics. My hemoglobin has gone from 7.6 to 10.6
which is much better, but still below what it has been and should be.

Meanwhile, the big problem remaining is that I cannot walk or stand for any
distance or length of time without great strain and without being out of
breath. It does not appear to be a hemoglobin or anemia problem. Which leads us
to the pulmonary doc I saw yesterday, Anil Kachril, whose office is way out at
5600 W. Addison. He wants me to take about six tests, including an overnight
sleep study (they are pretty confident that I have sleep apnea), an
echo-cardiogram and another PET/CT scan for the chest with contrast. The
problem could be multi-factorial, but it is true at this point that my entire
life is going to doctors, going to take tests or going to have procedures.
Friday is another fistula gram on my fistula that has been working (knock on
wood) since December 8th.

If I were to add up all the doc. appointments, all the tests, all the
procedures, it has to come to more than twenty and that is just since leaving
the hospital!

I still don't regret my decision to not go to the NMH ER on the night of March
20th. That was a life-saving decision in many ways.

And it is clear now that Northwestern really fouled up by doing the CT scan of
my abdomen and pelvic region without the contrast, even though I had done the
steroid prep (since I do have an allergic reaction to the iodine contrast dye,
but we have worked around that with the prep for quite a while.)

I am caught in the web.... said the fly to the spider.

As Anna Forys, one of the technicians at my clinic, told me, summing it up in
one sentence: "Mr. May, your job is to be sick and my job is to take care of
you." T'was ever thus.]

Carl Icahn boosts stake in Motorola

Carl Icahn boosts stake in Motorola
May 11, 2010

(Reuters) – Activist shareholder Carl Icahn raised his stake in mobile phone
maker Motorola Inc., according to a regulatory filing.
The billionaire investor had increased his stake to 203.33 million shares, or
around 8.75 percent of outstanding shares in Motorola, as of May 7, according
to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

As of the end of 2009, Icahn Associates Corp owned 119.79 million shares, or a
5.15 percent stake.

Motorola plans to split into two separate entities next year in an effort to
revamp the company. Its mobile phone business has lost ground to rivals in the
last few years. Motorola shares closed at $6.94 on Monday, up 5.15 percent, or
34 cents, as the market rose sharply on Monday. It moved up to $6.96 after
hours.

Moto shares were essentially flat early Tuesday at $6.94. Icahn owns stakes in
a wide range of industries, and is known for his aggressive moves to influence
management at companies like Time Warner Inc as well as biotech firms like
Genzyme Corp . Icahn earlier on Monday extended his $7 a share tender offer for
Lions Gate Entertainment Corp , although the studio said the low volume of
shares tendered indicates shareholders have rejected the bid.

Hi Ron!

Hope you had a fantastic weekend. Here’s information about two very exciting
upcoming Windy City Social events.

What

Jeff Pulver 140Conf State of Now Meet-up
Marketing Challenge Pre-Party

When

Thursday, May 13th
5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Where

Slugger’s
3540 N. Clark Street

Cost and Registration

Tickets are FREE but you MUST register in advance at
140confwcs.eventbrite.com as the event space is limited. We already have
over 200 people registered, but have space for about 50 more

The first is a party we are co-hosting with Jeff Pulver
pulver.com/jeff/. Jeff is a co-founder of Vonage and CEO of Pulver.com.
A VoIP pioneer, Jeff advocates for the need to develop an alternative to
government regulation of the applications layer of VoIP telephony.
Most recently, Jeff created the extremely successful 140 Characters Conference
(140conf.com), a gathering of people interested in the effects of the
real-time internet on business. His first conference in 2010, held in New York
DATE, attracted more than 1,000 people including speakers such as Jeffery
Hayzeltt, CMO of Kodak, Gary Vaynerchuk, author and star of Wine Library TV,
and Ivanka Trump.

In Chicago, Connie Burke, Communications Manager at General Motors, will join
Jeff and share how the real-time internet has affected GM.

The party will also serve as a pre-party for Windy City Social’s Marketing
Challenge — a fast-paced, apprentice like event where people compete in teams
against other teams to develop the best marketing ideas for big brands and
great charities. The actual Challenge will be held on May 19th. At the
pre-party, participants can meet Challenge Sponsors and team leads. Chevy,
Dream’s For Kids and The Chicago White Sox are the exciting challenge cases for
our Spring Challenge. Past Challenge cases include Buick, Southwest Airlines,
Goose Island Beer and Special Olympics Chicago.

We only have about 15 more spots for this event and our past two Marketing
Challenges sold out. People can register for the marketing challenge at:
wcsmktgchallenge.eventbrite.com

They will save $10 when they use code WCSten

TechCocktail13 will be hosting their party up the street at Goose Island so we
will be heading over there after our party winds down. [sic: May here. I
believe this was an honest mistake by Hope and not a Machiavellian attempt to
direct traffic to the wrong place, but the good news is that TechCocktail 13 is
at John Barleycorn's at 3524 N. Clark Street and not at Goose Island -- so they
are both on the same side of the street in the same block!] We look forward to
Thursday night for what’s shaping up to be an epic evening in the Chicago tech
and social media scene!!

Thanks for helping to spread the word. Have a great week and be well

Peter Balbus: Bridgelux and Molex Win LIGHTFAIR 2010 Most Innovative Product of

Ron –

I’m submitting the breaking news story below on Chicago-area Molex Inc. and
their strategic partner Bridgelux winning the LIGHTFAIR International (LFI)
2010 Most Innovative Product of the Year Award for the Helieon™ Sustainable
Light Module. This is a highly coveted award in the global lighting industry,
one of the truly “next big thing” areas of 21st century technology convergence
and transformation. As some of your readers are aware, I have been working
with Molex on this new product line as a strategic consultant and professional
services provider for over 2 years, and have found the Molex team to be one of
the most brilliant groups of engineers and innovators I have ever encountered.
Mike Picini, VP and General Manager for Molex SSL Division is an extraordinary
visionary and executive who has led this effort from the very beginning, and he
has assembled a small but formidable team within Molex who all helped to make
this happen.

This breakthrough innovation developed in conjunction with Bridgelux is
noteworthy as it brings an unprecedented level of modularity and cost reduction
to the emerging LED lighting industry, which has been held back largely by a
lack of standards and modularity plus very high price points relative to other
lighting technologies. This award recognizes not just the engineering
innovation represented by the Helieon™ Product Line, but how this novel
combination of design, materials and manufacturing techniques disrupts the
basis of competition in global lighting markets. And it’s great that Molex
happens to be a Chicago-area corporation, really a below-the-radar kind of
company, with a rich tradition of product and business innovation going back
more than 70 years.

This is also a wonderful story because it’s a great example of a large global
product design and manufacturing company harnessing internal capabilities and
resources to launch an internal start-up organization managed on a very tight
budget to expand into a 21st century emerging global marketspace. It serves as
dramatic proof that not all innovation occurs in garages and with
venture-backed entrepreneurs. Some of the most valuable innovation occurs in
large, established corporations that have the executive vision, corporate
culture and appetite for taking intelligent risks and placing bets in
industries that are still very much in their formative stages.

The LIGHTFAIR 2010 conference, going on in Las Vegas this week, is the biggest
in the world and it has 40,000 people.

Best regards,

Peter

Bridgelux and Molex Win LIGHTFAIR 2010 Most Innovative Product of the Year
Award for Helieon(TM) Sustainable Light Module
Top honor goes to plug-and-play solution that is as simple to use as a light
bulb

LISLE, Ill., May 12, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Bridgelux and Molex Incorporated
/quotes/comstock/15*!molx/quotes/nls/molx (MOLX 22.75, +0.60, +2.71%)
/quotes/comstock/15*!molx.a (MOLX.A 18.67, +0.17, +0.92%) announced today that
they have received the LIGHTFAIR International (LFI) 2010 Most Innovative
Product of the Year Award for the Helieon Sustainable Light Module. LFI, the
world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and
conference, announced the award today at its LFI Innovation Awards ceremony.
This is the highest award bestowed by the judges and recognizes the best new
product out of nearly 200 submissions. The product also won in the category of
“specialty lamps,” one of the 14 product categories evaluated by an independent
panel of renowned lighting professionals.

“We are incredibly honored to receive the highest award from our peers in the
lighting industry,” said Mike Picini, vice president of solid-state lighting,
Molex. “It demonstrates that Molex is a legitimate force in the solid-state
lighting arena and that we can successfully apply our core expertise to develop
products like Helieon, which is transforming the lighting industry.”

Helieon is an LED light source that turns and locks into place, emulating
traditional lighting sockets and allowing users to alter beam angle, color
temperature or light output without removing or replacing the luminaire. It
combines industry-leading solid-state lighting technology from Bridgelux with
innovative, easy-to-use interconnect technology from Molex.

“Bridgelux is delivering energy-efficient LED lighting solutions that are
driving the transformation of the $100 billion lighting industry,” said Bill
Watkins, Bridgelux CEO. “Providing high quality light and an easy, familiar
installation experience at a price point to enable mass adoption, Helieon
delivers on the promise of solid state lighting.”

With meticulous attention to performance, design, and ease of use aesthetics,
the award winning Helieon Sustainable Light Module is changing the way LED
lighting solutions are used. Emulating the familiar bulb and socket, the
Helieon light source and socket system delivers effortless installation,
interchangeability and upgradeability, allowing manufacturers to deliver a
variety of lighting effects from a single luminaire design and take advantage
of future LED technology improvements, pre or post installation. Lighting
environments can now be easily changed or adapted by switching beam angles,
color temperatures or light output at the module level, without any change to
the luminaire, just like changing a light bulb.

Helieon is currently on display at LIGHTFAIR International 2010, May 12-14 in
Molex booth 1741 and Bridgelux booth 2173. For more information, please visit

Ron,

I don’t remember the exact count. Point Bearing had the most points. Next was
iCubed. Both did a nice job. Textbreak was kind enough to stand in at the
last minute for a company that was getting funding. The company got one point
and is lead by an enthusiastic college student that can really benefit by some
experienced advisors.

Please don’t publish my email address.

I’ve been enjoying your Terry Howerton coverage. I CAN’T believe Terry
snowballed his way to ANY success in Chicago. You know, I almost sent this to
you back in 2005 when you called Terry a straight shooter. Very, very wrong
Ron. Terry is a sociopath with zero business acumen. He is addicted to money
and power and the only way he can collect either of those two things is to lie
and connive.

Terry Howerton is NOT an Eagle Scout. If he said so he was lying. He dropped
out before earning the rank of Eagle. Ask him to see his award certificate -
better yet, call BS HQ in Dallas and ask them to confirm.

I just cannot believe he still runs up $400 tabs at Ruth’s Chris. It’s his way
of rewarding himself, making himself feel like a big hot shot. It’s all a
farce.

As for Orbitz going after Terry’s assets – well, he has none. They will never
see that money.

Ron, if you want a great interview you need to get in touch with this guy:

uk.linkedin.com/pub/roger-murphy/a/a87/a45

Terry took this guy personally for over $650k back in 1999. It was an angel
investment…right into Terry’s pocket.
