Adams Street Partners mourns the sudden passing of our friend and colleague,
David S. Timson, at the age of 56. We will cherish the fond memories from
Dave’s 24 years of service with our organization. In addition to being a loving
husband and devoted father, he was a valued partner and a savvy investor with
an uncanny knack for adding levity to any situation. It is a privilege to have
been associated with a man of Dave’s caliber. We will miss him dearly.

Subject: Credit Card Act 2009

To: ron@themayreport.com
Section 508 of the Credit Card Act of 2009,
www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-627, directs
the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney General and the Secret
Service to do a report on violent ATM crimes, emergency PINs and panic
buttons. That report is due out no later than Februay 21st. I was
recently interviewed by the FTC for this report. This report will be
different. In the past, whenever a report was done on the problem,
they all reported that violent ATM crimes are not tracked by the
police, but should be. Over the last year, police departments all
over the country have made a slight change in their methodology that
exposes not only recent ATM crimes, but crimes going back as far as
the start of the ATM industry. Here’s how. By overlaying a master
list of ATM addresses against the crime codes for murder, abduction,
robbery, carjacking, home invasion, rape and missing persons where
foul play is suspected, any crime statistician can go back through the
files and pull up every violent crime where an ATM is involved. It
looks like 400 confirmed murder cases each year for the last 15 years,
but for every confirmed murder, two people permanently disappear,
under suspicious circumstances and the last clue to their whereabouts
is a series of ATM withdrawals leading out of the area. It appears
that the banking lobby was overreaching because of their misplaced
confidence that they could always keep the problem hidden. Obviously,
the business premises liability issues will predominate in this
matter. A great deal of misinformation has been spread about Zi Cubed
and the ATM SafetyPIN System and I predict that this misinformation
will now end up being revisited, e.g.

Chicago Area

Ronald
As household budgets continue to tighten, the need to take control of
ever-increasing energy bills grows. Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and the
Institute for Electric Efficiency invite you to attend a luncheon briefing to
learn about ComEd?s new energy efficiency plans and programs, including ComEd?s
smart meter pilot program, now underway in a dozen suburban Chicago communities.
The luncheon briefing will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 13, in the
Renaissance Room, 5th floor, InterContinental Hotel, 505 N. Michigan Avenue,
Chicago.
Anne Pramaggiore, President and COO of ComEd will be leading a panel discussion
on energy efficiency, featuring electric utility executives from the Midwest
and the Ford Motor Company, which is working alongside utilities to promote
plug-in electric vehicles. The panel discussion will focus on:
? Energy efficiency?s increasingly important role for the nation: creating
jobs, saving energy, reducing bills, and reducing carbon emissions;
? How the electric utility industry?s experience, customer relationships, and
capability to integrate efficiency with other long-term electric planning tools
make utilities uniquely positioned to help the nation achieve ambitious
economic and environmental goals.
Following the panel discussion, you are invited to enjoy lunch in the
technology exhibit area where they will have the opportunity to meet with and
interview utility executives and find out more about their smart meters,
in-home energy displays, and other smart gadgets and utility efficiency
programs.
Seating for the Institute for Electric Efficiency luncheon briefing is limited.
Please respond to this email or call 202-535-7800 to reserve your spot.
Thank you,
Richard

Hello Ronald,
Argonne scientist Ron Shepard has been named a fellow of the prestigious
American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Shepard develops methods that describe the quantum mechanical behavior of the
electrons in molecular systems. His computer codes are used to predict chemical
reaction rates, branching ratios, product yields, equilibrium constants,
spectroscopic constants and other properties of chemical interest for
hydrocarbon combustion and atmospheric chemical reactions, particularly those
involving highly reactive radical intermediates.

Argonne researcher named 2009 AAAS Fellow
ARGONNE, Ill. (Jan. 6, 2010) – Ron Shepard of the U.S. Department of Energy’s
Argonne National Laboratory has been awarded the distinction of Fellow of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as a
Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers because of their
scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its
applications.
As part of the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne, Shepard
was honored for his distinguished contributions in the field of computational
and theoretical chemistry-particularly the development of new ab initio
electronic structure methods.
Shepard develops methods that describe the quantum mechanical behavior of the
electrons in molecular systems.
His computer codes are used to predict chemical reaction rates, branching
ratios, product yields, equilibrium constants, spectroscopic constants and
other properties of chemical interest for hydrocarbon combustion and
atmospheric chemical reactions, particularly those involving highly reactive
radical intermediates.
This year, 531 members have been named Fellows of AAAS. New Fellows will be
presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing
science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on February 20 at the AAAS
Fellows Forum during the 2010 AAAS Annual Meeting in San Diego.
The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be
considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the
Association’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members
(so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee’s
institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer.
Each steering group then reviews the nominations of individuals within its
respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which
votes on the aggregate list.
The Council is the policymaking body of the association, chaired by the AAAS
president, and consists of the members of the board of directors, the retiring
section chairs, delegates from each electorate and each regional division and
two delegates from the National Association of Academies of Science.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory seeks solutions to
pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation’s first
national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific
research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work
closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal,
state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems,
advance America’s scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better
future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by
UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world’s
largest general scientific society and publishes the journal Science, as well
as Science Translational Medicine and Science Signaling. AAAS was founded in
1848 and includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science,
serving 10 million individuals worldwide. Science has the largest paid
circulation of any peer-reviewed general science journal in the world, with an
estimated total readership of one million. The non-profit AAAS is open to all
and fulfills its mission to “advance science and serve society” through
initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education, and
more. For the latest research news, log onto EurekAlert!, the premier
science-news Web site and a service of AAAS.
