Advanced Life Sciences Raising $30M Series A
By Lisa Lacy
10/6/2003
WOODRIDGE, Ill. — Advanced Life Sciences (ALS), a Woodridge, Ill.-based
developer of therapeutic compounds to fight infection, inflammation, and
cancer, is raising a $30-million Series A round that should close by the end
of the year, VentureWire has learned.
The funds will be used to develop clinical trial candidates and should last
three years, said CEO Mike Flavin.
This will be the first round of venture capital for the company, which has
to date raised $3 million in small business innovation research (SBIR)
grants and $21 million through a joint venture from the state government in
Sarawak, Malaysia for HIV compound Calanolide A. Additional funding has come
from the founders. Mr. Flavin said the company is using one SBIR grant to
develop new drugs for Alzheimer’s that target faulty protein aggregation.
ALS also recently received a patent for a class of indolocarbazole
compounds. The lead molecule of this class, ALS 423, has been effective in
prostate and ovarian cancer. ALS-423 blocks a critical enzyme in cancer
cells called topoisomerase I. The company received a $1-million SBIR
research grant for topoisomerase I. Advanced animal testing will begin soon
and the product will go to the clinic in two years, said Mr. Flavin.
In about a month, HIV drug Calanolide A will enter Phase II trials along
with ALS-886, which treats acute respiratory distress. In early 2004,
ALS-357, a malignant melanoma product that is a collaborative effort with
the University of Illinois at Chicago, will go to clinic.
ALS is also developing products for infectious diseases, oncology, and
inflammation that are in preclinical trials.
In September, the company relocated to new headquarters with a laboratory in
Woodridge, Ill. The new facility will enable ALS to expand its drug
discovery program in structural biology, medicinal chemistry, and biological
screening, said Mr. Flavin. The company will still outsource a significant
amount of later-stage development, including animal testing, clinical trial
management, and large scale chemical manufacturing, but the new facility
enables ALS to concentrate on early drug development. The company is
collaborating with partners including Argonne National Laboratory, the
University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
ALS has 15 employees and will hire lab personnel over the next three-to-six
months, growing to 20 over the next year.
Advanced Life Sciences spun out in 1999 from MediChem Life Sciences shortly
before the company made a public offering. MediChem was acquired by deCODE
genetics in March 2002 for $83 million.

Briefly noted, by Ron May
* Just a quick note to say that today turned into a total waste. I had an
appointment with the vascular surgeon at 9:45am and with the rehab institute
doctor at 11am and figured I would be home by noon. Well, it turned out to be
4pm. That shot the day. They are concerned about the swelling in my left leg
and had me get a test for blood clots which came up clean. They are also trying
to figure out better ways to do the wound care, by doubling the ace bandages,
to keep the swelling down. I cannot have compression stocking on my left leg as
I do on the right leg just yet because of the healing wound on the bottom of my
foot. Gee, I have not talked about health in a while, but the issues are still
there, although they have abated somewhat.
The bad/good news is that I have gained four pounds since leaving the hospital
— bad news because that is the wrong direction, good news because it could
have been much worse. I have to cut those carbs much more.
I want to break 240 by the end of the year.
* Something amusing and spiritually interesting: is there someone out there
looking down? I attended services at a modern Orthodox synagogue in the
neighborhood, Anshe Shalom, run by a very hip (as hip as an orthodox rabbi can
be) named Asher Lapatten (spelling?) This place is a “welcome all comers with
open arms” operation and I even met a guy who had been a reform Jew who is now
going there. This synagogue was started about 110 years ago when its founder
was banned from a traditional congregation for wearing a straw hat. He decided
to go off and start his own. By the way, I finally found out why they wear
tennis shoes and a suit on Yom Kippur. You can’t pray for forgiveness while
wearing the skin of a dead animal is the logic behind that.
I have no intention of becoming orthodox but there is a lot more that I could
know about my own religion since my religious education effectively ended
shortly after my Bar Mitzvah which was a third of a century ago.
I took the learner’s class taught by a rabbinic student, Mark Gitler. We read
some of the prayers, in particular the confession of sins called, I believe,
the vidduy. Anyway, there were twelve of us in the class and we went around the
room reading the passages in the order we happened to be sitting. I read three
passages of two lines each.
Remember, this is at random. There are confessions of lust, lofty bearing,
selfishness, hatred, and pretty much anything you can think of.
Well, is there any significance other than a purely random event that my
passages included the following lines?:
“And for the sin we committed against thee by idle talk”
and this one…
“And for the sin we committed against thee by talebearing”
How bizarre??!! A chill went up my spine.
Could I possibly have gotten any passages more appropriate?
Maybe there is something to all this spiritual stuff.

Well the surgery is over …and I survived. Wednesday, October 1st was the big

were able to get the entire tumor and it was, as suspected, benign, I left the

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Business Associates:
You are receiving this email because we have met and I believe you will be
interested in this story.
Wizdom is supporting upcoming events in the Chicago area that are important
to Special Education. References to these events are found on the Wizdom
Education website www.wizdomeducation.com.
Wizdom started work in Special Education in 1999 after winning a grant from
the US Department of Education. Among other things, we learned that: One
of 4 children are part of the Special Education (SE) system at sometime
during K-12. On the average there are 14.5% of the K-12 population in
SE. The No Child Left Behind Act has the potential to increase this to 50%
within a few years.
I believe that taking care of SE children is one of the things that makes
this country great. Unfortunately, the process is broken. We are not
getting the results we expect, and the costs are too high. Consider, that
the overhead cost of SE is 3 times that of Regular Education.
Our research shows that the process is critical from age 14 to completion
of high school, which is called the Transition Period. This is when
students are entitled to experiences that help them to enter the adult
world in the most positive way possible. The law says that each child must
have an Individualized Transition Plan (ITP).
The US Education Department agrees with our conclusion that the process is
broken. They asked us to apply the tools we developed in automating
elements of private industry for over two decades to fix the Transition
Process, to make it more effective and more efficient. We did this!
Our experience shows that Wizdom technology can reduce the cost of SE
administration by at least 25% and, gain improved outcomes. Technology is
not the challenge; the challenge is getting the word out. We thought about
a unique approach to get the word out in our local area.
Flying is one of my avocations. I own a fully restored 1946 J3 Piper Cub
based at Clow International Airport in Bolingbrook. Most people who see
this “cute little airplane” want to take a ride. A few years ago we were
asked to donate rides for fund raising events. The results were better
than anyone expected.
We decided to donate this unique flying experience to help raise money for
organizations supporting education. Examples include: Little Friends, the
Council for Exceptional Children, the Illinois Association of
Administrators of Special Education, the Naperville Public Library, and
Benedictine University. This year we have four remaining opportunities to
donate flights. Please go to our website. The donation process is
initiated through a silent auction, a live auction or a raffle. All of the
proceeds go to the organization. Wizdom Education gets a little name
recognition. I get to enjoy the smiles on the faces of my copilots.
The attached file shows one of the certificates that the organizations
use. If you are affiliated with an organization that you think would be
interested in participating in our program, please let us know.
Thanks, and I hope to see you at one of the events,
