______
Briefly noted, by Ron May
* I am always fascinated by those “light bulb” moments. Gian Fulgoni gave an
engrossing talk last night to TiE and his talk deserves some close discussion
and examination, but no time for it today. I will give you just a couple of
things.
During Gian’s talk he had mentioned that they were sitting around one day and
someone noticed that people comScore users were going online to get their
credit card information, and it dawned on them that they could gather
information on-line about off-line purchasing patterns. That connection between
on-line information and off-line purchasing behavior is crucial to the business
model and success of comScore. The dollars are still spent on off-line
marketing and advertising. Remember that only 5% of all purchases are on-line,
but it is also true that 75% of the people buying cars do on-line research.
After Gian’s talk (for those of you who don’t know this, his name is pronounced
“Jan”), I was hanging around talking to him about a variety of interesting
subjects like the sale of IRI and the future of the telemarketing/survey
business. I asked him if this credit card story is really how they came to the
conclusion that on-line could offer info. about off-line.
Here is what he told me: “I’ll tell you the thing that happened that really
convinced me that you could use the on-line behavior. It was right after
September 11th, and so we’re tracking buying by week by categories — how much
people are spending on travel, electronics, computers, books, apparel.
September 11th happened and all the trends…” [I had to flip my tape over, so
I don't have his exact words here] Gian said that he noticed a sharp drop in
book purchases and explained that he was baffled by this. “I couldn’t figure it
out, maybe people are distracted, whatever.” He then said that “November 8th
comes along and Barnes & Noble reports a big disappointment in revenue for the
quarter, so it’s like wait a minute — what’s happening out there, why are
people not buying books? — got into the database and started doing some
research and found out, you know when a lot of people buy books? — when they
are going to take a flight somewhere. So we said ‘Man, this is giving us a
signal about what is happening off line.’
I love those “Sartori” or “Eureka” moments. “Ah-hah!” It may seem obvious to us
now, but it was not so obvious then.
* In the category of “news,” IRI, Information Resources, Inc., Gian’s firm from
1980 until just a few years ago, is in the process of being acquired by
Symphony, a group out of California. The interesting thing is that if Symphony
buys IRI, as a shareholder you get $3.30 per share and you get a share in the
proceeds of the lawsuit. That lawsuit began in 1996 and is scheduled to go to
trial in September 2004.
The suit essentially charges AC Nielsen with violating the anti-trust laws of a
lot countries by bundling countries together. They would say to a client that
if you buy this country and that country, they will give such and such a deal,
but they have a monopoly in one of the those countries.
The stockholders get 75% of the proceeds of the lawsuit. The stock is actually
trading at $4.50 a share because the CVR (which stands for Contingent Value
Right) is worth the extra amount — at least that is how the market is valuing
it. When you consider the huge uncertainty involved, how long the case takes
and the appeal, that value being placed on the settlement of a lawsuit that may
not be settled for several more years is pretty incredible. That the market
would value the settlement of a lawsuit at close to 40% of the value of the
stock ($1.20:$3.30)!!
* I talked to Kapil Chaudhary from the Illinois Coalition last night at TiE. By
the way, TiE is now Talent Ideas Enterprise, not Talent Innovation Enterprise
as I wrote yesterday. Anyway, Kapil explained that his sector is software and
communications and that he works with about twelve firms right now. Two of
them, Centracom and InRule, were at the event last night and I interviewed the
CEOs of both firms. What the Coalition essentially does is make introductions
that may help develop the business. In other words, if you need to talk to the
heads of property management firms or the CIOs of certain companies, they will
try to use their network to get you those introductions. It’s a kind of
outsourced business development and marketing function, but highly specific and
targeted. I got more detail that I will give you Monday.
* Lee Neubecker ran into me last night about 10pm when I was having dinner at
Andie’s on Clark with my brother and sister-in-law, who also attended the
Fulgoni talk. Lee came in and joined us. I would be lying if I told you I found
the conversation boring. Quite the contrary. Lee has some incredible stories,
but he is very worried that I will give away sensitive information, even though
he never gave any names out, the stories themselves can be sensitive because
someone might recognize the scenarios. I will tell you sometime though.
It is fascinating. What happens when Lee is brought in to do e-mail
reconnaissance is that he comes across a lot of information about “bad”
behavior from cheating on one’s spouse to reading porn at work (which 70% of
men do) or things that are even more weird that I would rather not talk about
today (involving children.) That behavior may be on the part of the suspected
party, but it may be on the part of other “innocent” parties who are dragged
into the net. One woman who was a “by-stander” in a case was the recipient of
an e-mail from the person they were investigating and it turned out that she
had some kind of side business going.
How the info. or dirt gleaned gets used is then where things get messy. If a
company wants to fight a lawsuit, they have no qualms about using any and
everything they find to make the lawsuit just disappear. Hence, any dirt they
dig up on the person can and often is used. Essentially, it is a case of
blackmailing the blackmailer — trumping his card. But sometimes the situation
involves people who were originally not the target, collateral damage, so to
speak. In one case, an employee was suspected of having given away a customer
list to a competitor, but an examination of his computer showed someone on that
computer searching for a mail order bride. It turned out that the culprit there
was none other than the company president who had logged onto the guy’s
computer to look for a wife. Bring Lee in and you never know what he may find.
He explained that he has to play it straight and report the information he gets
to the company hiring him though.
Here are two scenarios that he has approved for publication. Lee has altered
the circumstances of the actual events slightly to protect the identity of the
individuals and or companies involved.
Scenario 1:
An executive was being stalked by an unknown person who was sending letters to
his home computer that his wife also used. His wife saw emails sent to his
husband that claimed the stalker and he were involved in an intricate trist.
The stalker some how knew the wife sometimes used their shared account. He
hired us to track the source of the emails. It turned out that the emails had
originated from a middle eastern country brothel. We had to negotiate to buy
the computers so that we could image them.
Scenario 2:
A company suspected that one of the recently laid off employees was implicitly
involved in emailing the remaining staff sensitive information about other
employees health status. We were able to image the computers of all employees
who were laid off to determine who had access to the health files. It was
discovered that one employee had save similar files containing this data to a
zip disk which had been long removed from the computer.
A few months ago, Lee changed the name of his firm from BuzzBoltMedia to
Forensicon. He can be reached at 312-427-5667 or at lneubecker@forensicon.com
About two-thirds of his business is for the defense, usually corporations being
sued for whatever — a drop in the stock market, a lay-off may trigger the
tendency to sue. In about one-third of the cases he represents the plaintiff.
I personally follow the philosophy that I would never do anything on my
computer or write anything in an email that I would be ashamed to see on the
front page of the New York Times. Your Yahoo! mail is not free from IP
identification and your Instant Messages can be retrieved. Remember that.
* John Dallas who originally was involved in running the Tech Forum at the
Union League Club and who had some kind of software business tied to the
medical field, has taken a position as VP at Challenger and Gray, the executive
search firm that tracks employment data.
* The MEF meeting on Tuesday night featured two case studies in do-it-yourself
SBIRs. Barbara Rapchak, the CEO of Leap of Faith Technologies, has received ten
to twelve SBIRs, both Phase I and Phase II. Her firm is in Crystal Lake.
John Patterson, a Ph.D. at Northwestern, has received Phase I and Phase II from
the NSF and has just now gotten a Phase I for $75K from the USDA. The company
he is associated with, Black Pearls, is in the aquaculture field (that is
farming under water.)
Both speakers stressed that SBIRs are not a two day affair. It will take you
two months to put a good proposal together and they also noted that if you are
looking for VC or angel money to boot, having received an SBIR is a great way
to show that a peer group of technical people has validated what you have done.
It lends credibility.
* Jeff Meredith is in town for the weekend and his friend Brad Zibung who works
at Leo Burnett is throwing a party for the Cubs. It is Saturday, October 4th,
at 9pm at Crush at 2843 N. Halstead and features music by The Locals and Quiver
Lip. By the way, Jeff tells me that as of three years ago, 40% of the power in
the state came from nuclear plants, making Illinois the most nuclear dependent
state in the country.

Here you go, Ron, as you asked. 95 pounds in just 5 months! I like to call it
a high school reunion- back to my old high school weight.
So many people have asked me about it that I have put a website
(www.waisting-away.com) and am writing a book. Some details are on the site,
along with the link to an article done in the Tribune a few weeks ago.
Here are some highlights on how it worked:
* Finding a good nutritionist and getting on her program (her
information is on my site)
* Reducing the calories significantly and learning what to eat in each
category
* 5 meals a day with mid morning and mid afternoon snacks (a favorite-
Atkins Advantage bars)
* Low carb, but more balanced than Atkins diet- selected fruits and
veggies are ok
* Meat is ok but keep portions small. Red meat just once a week. Fish
is best, then other white meats.
* No eating after 6 PM- food late at night does not get burned off
* Plenty of exercise- built up over time
* Tracking calories and exercise. Some days burned off more calories
exercising that I ate
* Exercised late at night (personal preference)- works better for me
and burned off more calories at night while sleeping
* Use the metrics on the exercise machines to spur on to higher levels-
increase calories burned per hour
* Just get started on exercise- you burn off more when you are the
heaviest- law of diminishing returns
* Cut out some things- candy, cookies, cake, popcorn, chips, and beer
while reducing the weight
* Drink lots of water- 8 glasses a day
* Plenty of mind games. A lifestyle not a diet. Reducing not losing
weight. Be the Michelangelo carving a statue. You have the right body,
just a little too much packaging.
* Be committed to the end result and then reset target lower.
* Ride out any temporary plateaus. It will come down more after your
body adjusts
* Get a good scale and measure daily. Ok to stray off track a day on
what you eat but don’t make it several days in a row.
* Realize this is just a temporary period and once on maintenance it
will be less intense. You are not becoming a martyr
The weight came off pretty steady, 25 pounds in the first month, scaling
down to 12 pounds the last month of the program. The weight went from 286
pounds to 191 pounds. The waist dropped from 45 to 33 inches. The percent
body fat went from 37% to 17%.
At no time did I feel like I was starving or depriving myself. I liked
that it was a balanced program, unlike some diets out there. I’ve been on
maintenance for several months now and it has been easy. I have been able
to eat more at times, have a couple beers or eat later, and still have been
fine. I also don’t have to exercise as much. I watch the weight closely
and if I slip a little, I just watch the eating for a couple days and crank
up the exercise a little.
I hope this motivates some of your readers. It’s not torture and a good
nutritionist can find a way to make a program fit your lifestyle within
reason. It’s something that you can live with. Come check out the site
for more information and stay tuned for the book in process, Waisting Away.
If you will think about what you ought to do for other people, your
character will take care of itself. Woodrow Wilson

The Strategic Management Association presents:

Dr. Mary Beth Stanek, Manager, Global Planning
General Motors Research & Development and Planning
Strategic Alliances – Opportunities, Issues, Risks, and Metrics
Thursday, October 16th at the 410 Club in Chicago at 5:30PM
This program is a joint event of the Strategic Management Association and the
Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals.
General Motors is the world s largest automotive operation. GM today has
manufacturing operations in 32 countries and its vehicles are sold in more than
190 countries. In 2002, GM sold more than 8.6 million cars and trucks, nearly
15 percent of the global vehicle market. GM s Alliance Network, covering
design, manufacturing, and distribution relationships, is crucial to GM s
worldwide reach. Over the past five years GM expanded its Alliance Network with
equity investments in Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru), Fiat Auto and Daewoo,
increased its share of Suzuki and Saab, and restructured its relationship with
Isuzu. Mr. Clay Phillips and Dr. Mary Beth Stanek will speak on GM s approach
to alliances, the major issues it has faced, and the risk and value metrics the
company applies for management and evaluation of its alliances.
Mr. Phillips’ responsibilities include oversight of GM s Intelligence Network,
Alliance Management processes and Global Product Portfolio Planning. He has
been part of the GM R&D and Planning organization since late 1998 and with
General Motors since 1986, working mainly in the areas of international
strategic planning, product planning and new business development. He has held

Hi Ron:
This program includes the tools that were used in the diabetes patient study at
Stanford Medical School I sent you . I hope you are able to participate. I
would appreciate it if you would pass this information on to others.
HeartMath – Power to Change Performance Program – November 8th – Oak Brook
Terrace
Are you interested in learning how to prevent, manage and reverse the effects
of anxiety and stress in your life to achieve peak performance while optimizing
health, vitality and emotional intelligence skills?
HeartMath’s Power to Change Performance one-day workshop will teach you how you
can accomplish this. The scientifically-validated tools and technology you will
learn in this interactive program can help you for a life time – in both your
personal and professional life.
The July, 2003 issue of Harvard Business review reported: Stress is rampant,
stress is growing, and stress hurts the bottom line. The American Institute
of Stress has reported that 75% to 90% of all doctor visits are due to stress.
According to the Centers for Disease Control over 80% of all illnesses are
stress related.
HeartMath is a unique stress reduction system that is unusually effective for
reducing anxiety and improving performance. Unlike many other services and
products that make similar claims, it has a solid scientific basis, and has
been thoroughly tested in a variety of settings that have clearly demonstrated
these benefits – Paul J. Rosch, M.D., F.A.C.P., President of the American
Institute of Stress and Clinical Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, New York
Medical College
This full day program is Saturday, November 8th, at LaQuinta Inn in Oak Brook
Terrace. It is only $295, which includes materials, morning and afternoon
snacks, and lunch. Participation is limited to the first fifteen registrants.
Additional information, including registration and contact information, can be
found at: www.emotionalmastery.com/programs.html. Please feel free to
pass this information on to others you think would be interested.
This is a great gift to give yourself for the holidays.
