skip the talk by Sun-Times business editor Dan Miller this morning so that I
can get another mailing out before noon. I hear that they have not decided
between two possible directions: one a technology section with a business
slant; the other, a tech section with a consumer electronics slant. Will the
attendees please push the business side with Chicago as the focus, PLEASE!!

Hi Ron! I enjoy the Report all the time.
For research, I’m looking for estimates on how many Internet users there are
in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Do you know who may have those sorts of numbers? I checked the City of
Chicago, and found nothing regarding the Internet.
Thanks much!

Ron,

I haven’t had the same experiences with Coolsavings.com as you’ve published.
Things are running like a top now. Seems to me that they have had a house
cleaning recently.

The managers and NEW contract recruiter are using our online recruiting
system as well as our recruiting services. No problems. Nor have we ever
really had any “problems” in the past.

Dear Ron:

A point of clarification about Cool Savings. Tech Image had Cool Savings as
a client for 18 months, which is about par for the course for dot-com and
start-up companies. When we began working for them, they were a classic
start-up, with a handful of employees and a website that featured coupons
from a couple of companies. We helped build their national image,
generating major placements in the New York Times, USA Today, BusinessWeek
and all of the major Internet and retail trades. One of the more
interesting Cool Savings projects was developing local market tests for
Barnes and Noble before they entered the dot-com space. We were evaluated
by our ability to generate coupon redemptions at specific Barnes and Noble
stores across the country. Hillel Levin was a demanding but fair client.
I’d like to think Tech Image shares a part of Cool Savings’ history and I’m
proud of the fact that we helped build their traffic from next to nothing to
approximately 500,000 hits per month. I still show this body of work to
prospective and current clients.

Take care,
Mike Nikolich

2. People Looking:

2a. From: “John Seebeck”
To: jobs@192.168.1.100/tmr
Subject: Not your typical applicant
Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 10:04:48 CST

Ron,
I need your helping transitioning into the high-tech arena. Ted Martin of
Martin Partners, LLC encouraged me to write something for publication in The
May Report. I check your report daily and it has taught me a lot. Keep up
the good work.

I left Circuit City after five years of service in November to complete two
internet business plans with two friends from graduate school (MBA 1994,
Virginia). While one of the plans may happen, I want to explore other
options.

Retail provided me the management experience I wanted: 600 employees, $100m
in sales, and full P&L accountability in a fast-paced, highly competitive,
consumer/technology-based industry. Prior to Circuit City, I worked for IBM
and Johnson & Higgins (insurance brokers, now owned by Marsh and McLennan).

The MBA, these three jobs and my recent work make me an ideal person for an
internet start-up:
1. Leadership experience (currently founding startups, Circuit City District
Manager, President of the student body at Virginia MBA program).
2. Not afraid of risk (left secure, well compensated, job to begin
entrepreneurial career).
3. Action-oriented (knows how to get things done without getting bogged down
in unnecessary details).
4. Management experience (13 years in the business world sharpening
communication, interpersonal, planning, organizing, analysis and decision
making skills).
5. Maturity and Diversity (technology-industry experience at IBM and CC plus
a variety of industries at J&H, several relocations, extensive international
business travel, and various team development roles).

Web sites must provide an atmosphere that results in purchases and return
visits. I understand what makes customers purchase and return for more
purchases. Furthermore, the convergence of traditional retail and the
internet will continue and people with expertise from the “brick and mortar”
side will help internet companies grow and retain customers.

I am a fast-learner and a hard worker, and am confident I will help a company
grow quickly.

background.
Date: 1/18/2000 11:26:14 AM Central Standard Time
From: Calvert312@aol.com
To: RONALDMAY@aol.com

Ron,

I have returned from Miami and wanted to take a few minutes to summarize my
background and provide a brief overview of what I would like to do. Since
being graduated form the GSB in 1989, I have spent my entire career
conceiving and executing corporate strategy projects. These projects have
ranged from acquisitions and divestitures to establishing a european
headquarters for a public company. Most recently, I was givien operating
responsibility for my company’s Australian operations. Basically, I have
held various senior-level positions encompassing strategic planning,
operations and corporate finance. I have always reported to CEOs and
Presidents. They have told me I am bright and know how to get the job done.
Last year, besides living in Europe, I flew over 200,000 miles—–I have a
lot of energy as well as significant international experience.

I have done the corporate thing {Arthur Andersen, Trek Bicycle (private), and
General Binding Corporation (public)}. I would now like to work in an
environment that is fast paced and even a bit risky. The two most important
aspects of a job for me are a bright group of people and having meaningful
input. I have a very good combination of strategic (probably more tactical)
and hands-on operating skills. I have an uncanny ability to read a trend
very well. I am intrigued with the way information technology is creeping
further into our day-to-day lives and how it will continue to do so. And how
people are becoming more comfortable with it. I can provide a resume’ that
looks fantastic as well as glowing recommendations, but i suspect everyone
you are speaking with can do the same. My point of diffentiation is that i
will get the job done and have fun doing it. If you want to chat a bit give
me a call. 773-296-4667.

Thanks,

Brian Calvert

Here is news about an IT Entrepreneurship course being offered by the
Illinois Institute of Technology that may be of interest to your
readers. The course, CS 595-074, will be meeting on Saturday mornings
starting on Jan. 22nd at the Rice Campus in Wheaton. The full-semester
16-week course may be applied toward a Masters degree in Computer
Science.

A description of the IIT IT Entrepreneurship course follows:
The course in IT Entrepreneurship is a practical introduction to the
venture financing process in Information Technology. The course explores
the development of business plans for e-business ventures. It also
covers legal issues of the organizational type, allocation of control
among developers and investors, and compliance with state and federal
securities laws.

The class textbook, which would certainly make a good reference, is
entitled “New Venture Creation – Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century”,
5th edition (ISBN 0-256-19756-3). The author of the text is Jeffery
Timmons, the Franklin. W. Olin Distinguished Professor of
Entrepreneurship at Babson College, MA.
